Ultra-processed food consumption, dietary behaviors, and marketing exposure among school adolescents in urban Ethiopia: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical period for establishing lifelong dietary habits. The growing availability and marketing of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) pose increasing public health nutrition concerns, particularly in rapidly urbanizing settings. However, qualitative evidence on how adolescents in urban Ethiopia engage with UPFs remains limited. This study explored UPF-related dietary behaviors, consumption patterns, and exposure to food marketing among school adolescents in Adama Town, Ethiopia. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted using 15 in-depth interviews with purposively se

A Trajectory-Regularized Physics-Informed Hybrid Framework for Specialty Fresh Food Commodity Price Forecasting and Market Stability Monitoring.

Price volatility in fresh food commodities can weaken supply-chain coordination, disturb market expectations, and increase short-term risks to food availability and affordability. This issue is more pronounced for specialty crops with seasonal production, concentrated supply, limited storability, and high sensitivity to climate, trade, energy, and online-attention shocks. This study develops a trajectory-regularized physics-informed multi-source forecasting framework for daily wholesale prices of garlic, scallion, and ginger in China from 2014 to 2024. The framework, denoted as STL-ETO-EMA-PIL

Public health risks and control measures associated with live animal and animal product trade in traditional food markets in low- and middle-income countries: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Traditional food markets (TFMs) support food security and livelihoods in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), but the trade of live animals and products of animal origin may facilitate zoonotic and foodborne disease transmission. Evidence on associated risks and control measures remains fragmented across pathogens, market types and interventions. This scoping review maps the literature on zoonotic and foodborne public health risks, risk factors and control measures related to the trade of live animals and animal products in TFMs in LMICs. METHODS: Web of Science, PubMed and…

Retail wet markets, food handlers, and hospitalised patients as nodes in a shared non-typhoidal Salmonella ecosystem: a one health molecular epidemiological pilot study in Wuhan, China.

BACKGROUND: Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) is a leading foodborne pathogen in China, yet the transmission dynamics linking retail wet markets, food handlers, and hospitalised patients remain poorly characterised. Using a One Health framework, we investigated whether genotypically related Salmonella populations circulate across these three source categories in Wuhan. METHODS: Thirty-two non-duplicate Salmonella isolates were recovered from retail meat at four wet markets (n = 9), anal swabs of food handlers (n = 7), and stool cultures of paediatric inpatients (n = 16) in Wuhan (June 2022-Septe

Innovative Non-thermal Processing Technologies for Enhancing Pet Food Safety and Quality: A Comprehensive Review of Publications, Patents, and Market Trends.

Non-thermal processing technologies have emerged as promising alternatives to traditional heat treatments in the pet food industry. To date, no prior review has systematically integrated peer-reviewed publications, patents, and commercial product launches on non-thermal technologies in the pet food sector during 2014-2024. This integrative approach fills an important gap by linking scientific evidence with innovation activity and market adoption. Unlike conventional thermal methods, which often degrade heat-sensitive nutrients and alter the sensory qualities of pet food, these innovative techn

Using artificial intelligence and computer vision to detect and monitor unhealthy child-directed food and beverage marketing: a data-driven study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity and diet-related noncommunicable diseases are urgent global public health challenges, driven in part by children's continued exposure to persuasive marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages. Traditional methods that manually evaluate child-targeted food marketing practices are resource-intensive and inefficient. This study aims to address these limitations by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), specifically computer vision and deep learning, to identify child-targeted food products and classify marketing elements on food packaging using a comprehensive datab

Prevalence and growth potential of Listeria monocytogenes in innovative, pre-packed, plant-based ready-to-eat food products on the Belgian market.

In recent years, pre-packed ready-to-eat (RTE) food products on the Belgian market have shifted to a more plant-based composition due to a variety of reasons, including consumer concerns about health, animal welfare, and sustainability. However, similar to animal-based RTE foods, plant-based RTE foods can be susceptible to the presence and outgrowth of Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes). Three innovative, pre-packed, plant-based RTE food product categories on the Belgian market were identified based upon data gaps regarding the prevalence and growth potential of this pathogen. These wer
