Avulsion fractures of both anterior and posterior cruciate ligament tibial insertions.

Ipsilateral femur fracture, patellar fracture, and tibial avulsion fractures of anterior and posterior cruciate ligament injuries are reported. We know of no other report of an injury such as this in the literature. We sutured the tibial avulsion fractures by transtibial suturing technique and internally fixated the femur by intramedullary interlocking nailing 2 weeks after the trauma. After 1 year the results were evaluated as very good. Early surgical repair is valuable in these injuries.

[Treatment of fractures of long bones associated with extensive skin avulsion].

The work analyses the experience in the treatment of 46 patients with fractures of long tubular bones and extensive wounds with avulsion of the skin at the department of emergency traumatology from 1983 to 1988. The method of choice in the treatment of fractures of the long tubular bones in this category of patients is functionally-stable osteosynthesis mainly with external fixation apparatuses on a nail or rod basis. A rational succession of the manipulations for surgical debridement of the extensive wound was determined, which made the surgeon's work much easier and reduced the time needed f

Surgical Treatment for Avulsion Fractures of the Anterolateral Ligament Associated with Periarticular Fractures of the Knee.

The existence and anatomy of the anterolateral ligament (ALL) of the knee are a somewhat controversial topic in orthopaedic surgery. The fixation of the avulsion fracture of the ALL (Segond fracture), associated with periarticular knee fractures, is rarely given much consideration while the major fracture fragments are reconstructed. This study aims to confirm the existence of ALL and evaluate the clinical outcomes of surgical management for avulsion fractures, involving its insertion, when associated with periarticular knee fractures. Twenty-three patients (16 males and 7 females) with avulsi

Avulsion Fracture of the Lesser Trochanter and the Use of Conservative Treatment.

Avulsion fractures of the lesser trochanter of the femur are extremely rare injuries in the pediatric population, most commonly resulting from physical activity. The typical mechanism involves a sudden contraction of the iliopsoas muscle, which inserts on the lesser trochanter. We present a rare case of such an injury in a pediatric patient, emphasizing the importance of appropriate imaging and the effectiveness of conservative management in achieving full recovery. An 11-year-old boy presented to the emergency department with perineal trauma sustained after losing balance while riding a bicyc

Stepping into the Unknown: Unveiling the Rarity of PCL Fracture-Avulsions.

Tears of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) are rare, and avulsion fracture of the tibial attachment of the posterior cruciate ligament is even rarer. These injuries usually occur in accidents such as car crashes, causing acute pain, swelling as well as total functional impotence of the knee. Studies on the incidence of these injuries show variable results, but there appears to be an upward trend. The surgical management of PCL avulsion fracture is not clearly established, although arthroscopic techniques are becoming more popular due to their potential benefits. However, some medical cente

Avulsion Fracture of the Tibial Tuberosity in an Adolescent: Case Report.

The present study reports a rare case of avulsion fracture of the tibial tuberosity in an adolescent. A 14-year-old male patient sprained his left knee during a soccer match. At the first emergency-room visit, he presented pain in his left knee, 2 +/4+ edema, and inability to walk and flex the affected knee, but no neurovascular changes or signs of compartment syndrome. Radiographs revealed a physeal fracture at the left proximal tibia, classified by Ogden, Tross and Murphy, and modified by Ryu and Debenham, as type IV, and complemented by Aerts et al. as type IV-B. Immobilization was performe

A Narrative Review on Avulsion Fractures of the Upper and Lower Limbs.

Avulsion fractures compromise function and movement at the affected joint. If left untreated, it can lead to deformity, nonunion, malunion, pain, and disability. The purpose of this review was to identify and describe the epidemiology and available treatment options for common avulsion fractures of the upper and lower extremities. Current evidence suggests that optimal treatment is dependent on the severity of the fracture. Conservative efforts generally include casting or splinting with a period of immobilization. Surgery is typically indicated for more severe cases or if nonoperative treatme

A Case of Nonunion Avulsion Fracture of the Anterior Tibial Eminence.

Avulsion fracture of the anterior tibial eminence is an uncommon injury. If bone union does not occur, knee extension will be limited by impingement of the avulsed fragment and knee instability will be induced by dysfunction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). This report describes a 55-year-old woman who experienced an avulsion fracture of the right anterior tibial eminence during recreational skiing. Sixteen months later, she presented at our hospital with limitation of right knee extension. Plain radiography showed nonunion of the avulsion fracture region, and arthroscopy showed that t

Avulsion fractures of the pelvis - a qualitative systematic review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: To assess a causal relationship between physical activity or boney surgical intervention and the occurrence of avulsion fracture in the pelvis. Secondarily to assess the average age at which avulsion fracture occurs in cases associated with physical activity or boney surgery. METHOD: A literature search was performed on a variety of databases using text words and MeSH terms. Results were limited to English language. Cases involving trauma or pathological disease were excluded. Causation Criteria scores were calculated for each paper to establish a link between the suspected mechani

[Surgical management of posterior cruciate ligament avulsion fracture].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Injury to the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is relatively rare and, if combined with avulsion fracture of the PCL insertion site, it accounts for only a small number of knee injuries. This is why PCL avulsion fracture is an easily missed diagnosis resulting in knee instability and arthritis development. The aim of this study was to show the necessity of surgical treatment of these injuries. MATERIAL: Between January 2004 and September 2005, four patients with PCL injury underwent surgery. Three had avulsion fracture at the PCL insertion site, and in one the avulsion

Arthroscopic reconstruction of an isolated avulsion fracture of the lesser tuberosity.

Isolated avulsion fracture of the lesser tuberosity represents an extremely rare injury that occurs mainly in younger patients. This report outlines the case of a 35-year-old healthy man who sustained a bony avulsion of the subscapularis tendon during an abduction external rotation trauma to his left shoulder. The injury was diagnosed by physical examination, standard radiographs, and magnetic resonance imaging. An arthroscopic reconstruction including closed reduction and internal fixation using suture anchors was performed. After a follow-up of 6 months, the patient's Constant Score increase

Avulsion fractures of the medial tubercle of the posterior process of the talus.

Avulsion fracture of the medial tubercle of the posterior process of the talus occurs after forceful dorsiflexion-pronation of the ankle. We evaluated five patients who had sustained this fracture while participating in sporting activities. Two patients were correctly diagnosed acutely and treated with immobilization and limited weightbearing. Avulsion fractures in the remaining three patients went undiagnosed acutely. This group was treated with delayed operative excision for persistent posteromedial ankle pain. The patients were evaluated at a mean follow-up of 35 months using the AOFAS Ankl

Patterns of Anterior Inferior Tibiofibular Ligament Avulsion Fracture Accompanied by Ankle Fracture.

The anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament (AITFL) avulsion fracture accompanying an ankle fracture can compromise ankle stability, necessitating accurate evaluation and a clear understanding of its pathophysiology.. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between AITFL avulsion fracture and Lauge-Hansen, Wagstaffe classification. A retro-prospective study was conducted at a university-affiliated tertiary care medical center. We selected 128 patients who underwent surgery at our institution between January 2013 and July 2017 and analyzed the association between AITFL avulsion

Bilateral Tibial Tubercle Avulsion Fractures in Children - Clinical Results of a Rare Fracture.

BACKGROUND: Tibial tubercle avulsion fractures are rare, they represent less than 1% of all physeal fractures. Compared to monolateral tibial tubercle avulsion fractures, bilateral occurrence is even rarer. The purpose of this study is to report about the so far largest group of bilateral avulsion fractures and to compare them to unilateral fractures as well as to current literature. METHOD: All patients who suffered from bilateral tibial tubercle fractures between January 2009 and March 2019 were included. All medical records and radiographs were reviewed and a clinical follow-up was perform

Posterior Wall Fracture-Dislocation With Traumatic Abductor Avulsion.

The typical injury pattern of a posterior hip dislocation includes posterior wall fracture, capsular injury, and muscular strain. This report presents an example of a posterior wall acetabulum fracture-dislocation associated with complete hip abductor tendon and capsular avulsion from the femur. The patient was found to have an unstable hip despite a small posterior wall fragment due to the extensive soft tissue injury. This was repaired. The patient had improvement in function initially, but ultimately required repair of the hip abductor tendons. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is

Isolated avulsion fracture at the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle.

An isolated avulsion fracture involving the femoral origin of the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle without an associated muscular, meniscal, or ligamentous injury is extremely rare. We report a case of a 14-year-old male wrestler who presented with a radiographically occult avulsion fracture of the medial gastrocnemius tendon sustained during competition. To our knowledge, this is the first case to describe a mechanism of injury as well as to report a return to competition after non-operative management.

Atypical stress-avulsion fracture of the Lisfranc joint complex.

Antiphospholipid syndrome and systemic erythematosus have been associated with metatarsal stress fractures. Stress fractures of the Lisfranc joint complex are uncommon injuries but have been reported to occur most frequently in ballet dancers. We present a case of an avulsion fracture of the Lisfranc joint complex that occurred spontaneously. We have reviewed the association between systemic conditions and metatarsal fractures and proposed a series of hypothetical pathological events that may have contributed to this unusual injury.
