Predicting range expansion of three tropical fruit flies and risks to pome and stone fruit production in temperate regions.

Human activities and climate change are driving the northward expansion of invasive fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae), posing increasing threats to temperate fruit production. Here, we combine the MaxEnt model with direct field observations to assess the potential range expansion of three tephritid species-Bactrocera dorsalis, Zeugodacus tau, and Z. cucurbitae-under climate change scenarios through 2060, and to evaluate the associated risks to temperate fruit production. Model projections indicate that the suitable habitat area for all three species will expand significantly in the future and…

Influence of Various Fruit Preservation Methods on the Phenolic Composition and Antioxidant Activity of Prunus spinosa L. Fruit Extract.

Wild edible plants, historically valued for their medicinal properties, can be a sustainable source of food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. The blue berries of Prunus spinosa L., known as blackthorns, have antioxidant, astringent, and antimicrobial benefits. To preserve these properties after harvesting, understanding the best storage methods is essential. In this study, blackthorns were preserved using different methods (air-drying, freezing, or freeze-drying) to determine the optimal procedure for preserving their antioxidant activity. The fruits were extracted using a 50:50 (V/V) mixture o…

Fruitful changes? Exploring household fruit purchase decisions following comprehensive food policy regulations in Chile.

Changes in unprocessed healthy food purchases associated with the implementation of comprehensive food policy remain understudied. This study analyzes whether, following the announcement, modification, and implementation of Chile's Food Labeling and Advertising law targeting highly processed food (occurring in 2012, 2015, and 2016, respectively), households improved their fruit purchase decisions: purchase participation (i.e., buying likelihood) and purchase quantity. Expenditure data from a representative sample of Chilean households were employed, covering two consecutive survey waves conduc…

Inactivation of microbes on fruit surfaces using photodynamic therapy and its influence on the postharvest shelf-life of fruits.

In this study, the disinfection effect of curcumin-mediated photodynamic therapy on the contact surfaces of fresh fruit was investigated. Our results showed that the optimum concentration of curcumin and the energy density required were 0.5 μM and 7.2 J/cm2, respectively. Photodynamic therapy showed an excellent disinfection rate for the fresh fruits with a reduction of more than 80% in the total bacteria and coliform counts. The photodynamic therapy inhibited species that belonged to the categories of gram-negative and facultative anaerobic bacteria, except for two species of the Trichoderma …

An uncommon side effect from the 'king of fruit': A case report on life-threatening hyperkalaemia after eating durian fruit.

Hyperkalaemia is a condition of excess potassium level that occurs as a result of increased intake, or reduced renal clearance, or both. In a severe condition, hyperkalaemia is a medical emergency that can be life-threatening especially if recognised late and left untreated. There are many causes of hyperkalaemia. However, eating durian fruit in the background of impaired kidney function is a very rare occurrence. In this article, we report a case of an elderly lady who presented with a life-threatening hyperkalaemia as a result of eating large amount of durian fruit while having multiple diar…

Carotenoids from gac fruit aril (Momordica cochinchinensis [Lour.] Spreng.) are more bioaccessible than those from carrot root and tomato fruit.

Using a simulated digestion procedure in vitro, liberation and bioaccessibility of β-carotene (29.5±1.7% and 22.6±0.9%, respectively) and lycopene (51.3±2.6% and 33.2±3.1%, respectively) from gac fruit aril were found to be significantly higher than from carrot root (β-carotene, 5.2±0.5% and 0.5±0.2%, respectively) and tomato fruit (lycopene, 15.9±2.8% and 1.8±0.5%, respectively). Gac fruit aril naturally contained significantly more lipids (11% on fresh weight base) than carrot root and tomato fruit (<1%). However, when test meals were supplemented with an O/W emulsion to match the content of…

Antifungal potential of Capsicum annuum var. glabriusculum on Moniliophthora roreri in response to fruit maturity and shading during fruit growth.

Moniliophthora roreri has significantly impacted cacao production in Latin America, including Mexico. Extracts of Capsicum annuum can inhibit its growth, although their effectiveness depends on fruit maturity and environmental conditions. In this study, the in vitro efficacy of methanolic extracts of immature and mature fruits of C. annuum var. glabriusculum from plants grown under 0, 35, and 70% shade was evaluated for its ability to inhibit mycelial growth (MG) and sporulation of M. roreri. The most effective treatment was selected and used in a field trial involving young fruits of three ca…

Fruit Preference, Parasitism, and Offspring Fitness of Fopius arisanus (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) Exposed to Bactrocera dorsalis' (Diptera: Tephritidae) Infested Fruit Species.

Fopius arisanus (Sonan) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a koinobiont solitary parasitoid of various fruit flies, particularly those in the genus Bactrocera. Researchers introduced F. arisanus into Africa for the biological control of Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae), a pest of a wide range of fruit trees and vegetables. However, the suitability of host fruit species as egg-laying substrates for parasitoid development remains poorly investigated in tropical Africa. The present study examines the preference and performance of F. arisanus on B. dorsalis reared on eleven fruit spec…

The Fruit of Gold: Biomimicry in the Syntheses of Lankacidins.

Natural products are constructed by organisms in impressive ways through various highly selective enzyme-catalyzed chemical reactions. Over the past century, there has been considerable interest in understanding and emulating the underlying biosynthetic logic for the target molecule. The successful implementation of a biomimetic strategy usually has some uniquely valuable benefits over other abiotic routes in total synthesis by (1) corroborating the chemical feasibility of a given biogenetic hypothesis and further unraveling some insightful implications for future biosynthetic studies and (2)

Biological control of postharvest diseases of fruits.

Losses from postharvest fruit diseases range from 1 to 20 percent in the United States, depending on the commodity. The application of fungicides to fruits after harvest to reduce decay has been increasingly curtailed by the development of pathogen resistance to many key fungicides, the lack of replacement fungicides, negative public perception regarding the safety of pesticides and consequent restrictions on fungicide use. Biological control of postharvest diseases (BCPD) has emerged as an effective alternative. Because wound-invading necrotrophic pathogens are vulnerable to biocontrol, antag…

Hepatoprotective activity of Luffa echinata fruits.

The different extracts of the fruits of Luffa echinata Roxb. (Cucurbitaceae) were tested for their hepatoprotective activity against CCl(4) induced hepatotoxicity in albino rats. The degree of protection was measured by using biochemical parameters like serum glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamic pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), alkaline phosphatase (ALKP), total protein (TP) and total albumin (TA). The petroleum ether, acetone and methanolic extracts showed a significant hepatoprotective activity comparable with those of Silymarin.
