Biomass-derived compounds and pyrolysis bio-oils would play a crucial role in meeting the globally goal towards decarbonization of the aviation industry through sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The carbon number of carboxylic acids abundant in biomass pyrolysis bio-oils is mostly within C1-C3, which falls short of gasoline and aviation fuels hydrocarbon range. These carboxylic acids require C-C coupling via ketonisation and then, aldol condensation to produce elongated and branched chain precursors with similar carbon-chain to match gasoline and jet fuel (C6-C16). This dataset was obtained fro

Fuel fraud has proliferated due to underlying economic advantage in nearly every nation. For the purpose of detecting adulteration and providing real-time quality assurance, non-destructive oil analysis is crucial. This paper reports the simple approach for fingerprinting undiluted petroleum products including gasoline from various brands, diesel, and kerosene oil in comparison with organic solvents using synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy and hierarchical cluster analysis. Fluorescence-based successful detection of adulterated samples is demonstrated in imported RON 92 gasoline, synthetica

Sulphur Emission Control Areas (SECAs), mandated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), regulate fuel sulphur content (FSC) to mitigate the environmental and health impact of shipping emissions in coastal areas. Currently, FSC is limited to 0.1% (w/w) within and 0.5% (w/w) outside SECAs, with exceptions for ships employing wet sulphur scrubbers. These scrubbers enable vessels using non-compliant fuels such as high-sulphur heavy fuel oils (HFOs) to enter SECAs. However, while sulphur reduction via scrubbers is effective, their efficiency in capturing other potentially harmful gases r…

The present work aimed to study, predict and understand benzene migration that occurred during an industrial spill using numerical simulation by computational fluid dynamics. Advection, diffusion and adsorption were the main mechanisms considered that governed the spill incident. The incident occurred due to a fracture under a fuel oil storage tank. The tank was located on a hill 18 m high, and the initial value of benzene concentration (soil saturation) was 60 ppm. When the spill was discovered, samples in the affected zone were taken using an experimental design. Many samples showed a greate

Unintentional poisoning from liquid fuels accounts for approximately 2.5% of all unintentional poisoning exposures among children aged <6 years. The risk for unintentional poisoning increases when fuel is transferred from its original container, often with required child-resistant packaging, to other containers (e.g., fuel lamps) without special packaging requirements. This report describes the poisonings of four children who were admitted to a regional referral medical center in Columbus, Ohio, during a 2-week period in August 1997; these children developed serious pulmonary complications aft

Chemical fingerprinting is commonly undertaken to assist in the resolution of multi-party liability disputes, particularly when contaminants have migrated beyond property boundaries, in litigation-driven environmental assessments related to oil spills, and in assessing potential environmental impacts following releases of petroleum products into the environment. In this paper, we present data relating to the performance of source correlation indices for selected heavy oils over the course of a 9-month microcosm study. The results obtained in this study demonstrated that hopane pair indices var

The effects of sodium sulfate in fuel oil and salty atmospheric air on the emission characteristics of furnaces or boilers burned with emulsified diesel oils are considered in this study. An industrial cylindrical furnace made of stainless steel associated with an automatic oil-fired burner was used for the emission measurements. Both neat diesel oil and emulsified diesel oil with distilled water were used as the tested oils. A homogenizing and emulsifying machine was employed to stir the diesel oil and sodium sulfate powder into a homogeneous oil mixture, and to prepare emulsions of micro-dro

In this study, we examined the feasibility of using epoxidized liquid isoprene rubber (E-LqIR) as a processing aid for truck and bus radial (TBR) tire treads and investigated the effects of the epoxide content on the wear resistance, fuel efficiency, and resistance to extraction of the E-LqIRs. The results confirmed that, compared to the treated distillate aromatic extract (TDAE) oil, the E-LqIRs could enhance the filler-rubber interactions and reduce the oil migration. However, the consumption of sulfur by the E-LqIRs resulted in a lower crosslink density compared to that of the TDAE oil, and

Aerosol emissions from international shipping are recognized to have a large impact on the Earth's radiation budget, directly by scattering and absorbing solar radiation and indirectly by altering cloud properties. New regulations have recently been approved by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) aiming at progressive reductions of the maximum sulfur content allowed in marine fuels from current 4.5% by mass down to 0.5% in 2020, with more restrictive limits already applied in some coastal regions. In this context, we use a global bottom-up algorithm to calculate geographically resolv

The processing of waste tires is a significant challenge. The pyrolysis of waste tires offers a sustainable pathway to produce fuels, addressing both waste management and energy recovery challenges. However, due to the presence of a large amount of unsaturated, aromatic hydrocarbons and sulfur compounds, their direct use as fuel is not possible. Catalysts based on Pd, Pt, and other metals are commonly used for the hydrotreating of pyrolysis oil for producing alternative transportation fuels. The effect of hydrotreating with the commercial Pt/Al2O3 and NiMo/Al2O3 catalysts on the chemical compo

Emissions from ocean-going vessels (OGVs) are a significant health concern for people near port communities. This paper reports the emission benefits for two mitigation strategies, cleaner engines and cleaner fuels, for a 2010 container vessel. In-use emissions were measured following International Organization for Standardization (ISO) protocols. The overall in-use nitrogen oxide (NO(x)) emission factor was 16.1 ± 0.1 gkW(-1) h(-1), lower than the Tier 1 certification (17 gkW(-1) h(-1)) and significantly lower than the benchmark value of 18.7 gkW(-1) h(-1) commonly used for estimating emissio

This study experimentally investigates the performance, combustion, and emission characteristics of a single-cylinder diesel engine operated in dual-fuel mode using pyrolysis oil and gaseous hydrogen. Four fuel combinations were examined: neat diesel (100D), diesel–hydrogen (50D50H), diesel–pyrolysis oil (90D10P), and diesel–pyrolysis oil with hydrogen enrichment (90D10P + 50 LPH). The engine was operated at a constant speed of 1,500 rpm under varying load conditions (0–100%), and the results were analysed using response surface methodology (RSM). The 50D50H blend achieved the highest brake th

Microwave co-pyrolysis was examined as an approach for simultaneous reduction and treatment of environmentally hazardous hospital plastic waste (HPW), lignocellulosic (palm kernel shell, PKS) and triglycerides (waste vegetable oil, WVO) biowaste as co-feedstock. The co-pyrolysis demonstrated faster heating rate (16-43 °C/min) compared to microwave pyrolysis of single feedstock (9-17 °C/min). Microwave co-pyrolysis of HPW/WVO performed at 1:1 ratio produced a higher yield (80.5 wt%) of hydrocarbon liquid fuel compared to HPW/PKS (78.2 wt%). The liquid oil possessed a low nitrogen content (< 4 w

The majority of industries throughout the world rely largely on fossil fuels as their primary energy source. However, these resources are finite and become scarcer by the day. Therefore, exploring alternative fuels and additives for diesel fuel is imperative to mitigate fuel consumption. A diesel engine powered with different blends of diesel fuel (DF), graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles, and tire pyrolysis oil (TPO) was used in this investigation. The goal was to undertake in-depth evaluations of performance and emission characteristics. The findings of these investigations were compared to th

Power plant emissions have a significant impact on air quality, and a frequent assumption made in estimating impacts is to assume annual or monthly average emission rates. This study investigates the impact, on predicted ambient concentrations, of assuming annual average emissions, compared to resolving emissions on an hourly basis (base case). A case study of emissions from power plants in Kuwait, for the year 2014, is presented. In Kuwait, power plants operate on a mix of natural gas, gas oil, crude oil, and heavy fuel oil, and the type of fuel used varies on an hourly basis. Because of this

An estimate of the contribution of mercury to the atmospheric environment from petroleum processed in the United States is constructed from … n the high side by a factor of 3-10. If the mean amounts of mercury in U.S. distillate and residual fuel oils are in the range of 5-15 ppb, as suggested by more recent data, then U.S. fuel oil combustion should contribute no more that about 1000-3000 kg/yr (emission ratio = 1) of mercury to the atmospheric burden.

Pyrolysis bio-oils, one of the products of lignocellulosic biomass pyrolysis, have the potential to be widely used as fuels. The chemical composition of bio-oils is very complicated as they contain hundreds, if not thousands, of different, mostly oxygen-containing, compounds with a wide distribution of physical properties, chemical structures, and concentrations. Detailed knowledge of bio-oil composition is crucial for optimizing both the pyrolysis processes and for any subsequent upgrading into a more viable fuel resource. Here we report the successful use of low-field, or benchtop, nuclear m

Fast-pyrolysis bio-oils (FPBOs) obtained from lignocellulosic biomass are gaining attention as sustainable fuels for various applications, including the transport sector and power production. A significant fraction of bio-oils is constituted by nitrogen-containing compounds (N fuels) that should be considered when developing surrogate models for FPBOs. Moreover, the content of N fuels in FPBOs is expected to strongly contribute to the production of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) directly from fuel-bound nitrogen (fuel NO x ), in addition to the thermal NO x formation pathways typical of high-temperat
