In neutropenic patients, lungs are involved in 50%-80% of cases of fusariosis, but imaging of pulmonary fusariosis has been previously described as indistinguishable from other invasive mould diseases. Fusarium polyphialidicum caused a corneal ulcer in a Spanish man. Diagnosis was established by a histopathological study and repeated cultures. The isolate was clearly resistant in vitro to the antifungal agents tested. This is the first case of human or animal mycosis by this rare fungus.

The fungus Fusarium moniliforme Sheldon is a common contaminant of maize (Zea mays L.) intended for human and animal consumption throughout the world. Fatal pulmonary infection in a captive alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) is reported. At necropsy, the animal appeared to be in excellent nutritional condition, but a severe necrotizing bronchitis with bronchiectasis was present. Histological examination revealed numerous branched, septate, hyaline hyphae within the necrotic debris lining the bronchi and rarely infiltrating into the adjacent stroma. The fungus cultured from the lung was identified as F. moniliforme.

A case of fingernail infection by Fusarium is presented. This nondermatophytic mold is an infrequent cause of onychomycosis, more typically involving the great toenail. Characteristic histologic features including the presence of hyphae and chlamydoconia are helpful in rapid diagnosis and selection of appropriate antifungal therapy. Although Fusarium has shown resistance to most antifungal medications in vitro, intermittent therapy with fluconazole led to improvement in this patient.
