Crossed renal ectopia is an unusual anomaly, 90% of which is fused to the ipsilateral kidney. Multicystic dysplasia in association with crossed non-fused renal ectopia is a very rare phenomenon and can produce a palpable abdominal mass. We report a 2-year old girl who presented with a mass in the abdomen. Detailed evaluation including laparotomy confirmed a diagnosis of multicystic dysplasia in a crossed non-fused ectopic kidney. This diagnostic entity should be considered, when a mass is found in the abdomen or pelvis, and when no kidney can be found in it's normal ipsilateral position.

Due to anomalous anatomy, pyeloplasty with a horseshoe kidney (HSK) presents a technical challenge. Previously, we reported a technique of intraperitoneal laparoscopic surgery in Trendelenburg position (ILSTP) for pyelolithotomy, pyeloplasty, and heminephrectomy in patients with HSKs. To demonstrate the procedure, the case of a 29-year-old female with HSK and left hydronephrosis who underwent pyeloplasty using transmesenteric ILSTP is presented. Magnetic resonance confirmed HSK with left-sided hydronephrosis. After opening a window in the mesentery and dissecting the renal pelvis and left uret

The current study aimed to investigate the feasibility and safety of robot-assisted laparoscopic resection of the isthmus in patients with symptomatic horseshoe kidney. A retrospective analysis of clinical data from four patients with symptomatic horseshoe kidney treated between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2023 at Guizhou Provincial People's Hospital was conducted. The main surgical procedures included robot-assisted laparoscopic resection of the isthmus, kidney fixation, pyeloplasty, and pyelolithotomy. All four patients underwent successful surgery. One patient had concomitant calculi.

INTRODUCTION: In this case report, we demonstrate our technique of a retroperitoneal laparoscopic heminephrectomy for a T1b right hilar tumor in a horseshoe kidney.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old Vietnamese woman presented to the hospital because of right flank pain. On presentation, her serum creatinine was 0.86 mg/dL and glomerular filtration rate was 65.2 mL/minute/1.73 m2. According to her renal scintigraphy, glomerular filtration rates of the right and left moieties were 24.2 and 35.5 mL/minute, respectively. Computed tomography imaging demonstrated a 5.5 × 5.0 cm solid hilar mass with

We report the case of a 50-year-old Tibetan man who presented to an outpatient urology clinic after abdominal ultrasound for poorly defined abdominal pain demonstrated horseshoe kidney (HK) with a right moiety ~3.7 cm mass further characterised using contrast-enhanced CT scan (CECT). This dedicated imaging confirmed HK with a heterogeneously enhancing right upper pole 3.1 cm×3.7 cm×2.7 cm mass. Due to suspicion for aberrant vasculature on CECT, renovascular angiography was performed, which revealed recruitment of a right paravertebral vessel alongside two right renal moiety arteries and multip

The cases of horseshoe kidney presented by xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis are very rare. In this study, the case of XGP developing in HSK in a young female patient was presented due to its rare incidence and the previously reported cases were reviewed, as well. The patient, who has end-stage renal disease and was under treatment, admitted to the clinic for preemptive kidney transplantation. Bilateral open en bloc nephrectomy was performed before the kidney transplantation. The histopathological examination of the specimen was reported as XGP. Eight months later, living-donor organ transpla

A horseshoe kidney (HSK) is the most frequent genitourinary fusion anomaly in lower pole of kidney fused during fetal development. This syndrome frequently results in morphological defects such as ectopia and malrotation. These structural alterations can lead to ureteropelvic junction obstruction, kidney stones and urinary tract infections. Urolithiasis is a common consequence of the HSK. This case report describes the surgical treatment of ureteric calculus in a boy with an HSK using laparoscopic techniques.

Renal ectopia and fusion anomalies are Congenital Anomalies of the Kidney and the Urinary Tract (CAKUT) that are usually incidentally detected and asymptomatic. Patients affected present a higher risk of complications like recurrent urinary tract infections or obstruction. Pancake kidney (PK) is one of the rarest types of renal anomaly with complete fusion of the superior, mild and inferior poles of both kidneys in the pelvic cavity. Each kidney has its own excretory system with two ureters that do not cross the midline. In the asymptomatic cases, a conservative approach should be performed. S

Crossed fused renal ectopia (CFRE) is an uncommon and congenital anomaly in which both kidneys are fused and located on one side of the body, often going undetected due to its asymptomatic nature. When symptomatic, it can present unique challenges in the management of nephrolithiasis due to altered anatomy and impaired drainage. We report a rare case of a young adult male with a large renal calculus in a left-to-right crossed-fused ectopic kidney-an anatomical variant seldom encountered in clinical practice. The patient was successfully treated with retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) using a

Orthotopic multicystic dysplastic kidney with crossed fused ectopia is a rare congenital anomaly. This congenital anomaly may give an appearance of a solitary kidney morphology during the initial imaging evaluation. A solitary kidney should be carefully evaluated for the presence of duplication, horseshoe configuration, or crossed renal ectopy. Vesicoureteral reflux is a common finding associated with a multicystic dysplastic kidney. We present an infant with an orthotopic multicystic dysplastic kidney and an inferiorly placed crossed fused ectopic kidney. The presence of a complex congenital

Crossed renal ectopy (CRE) is the second most common fusion anomaly of the kidney, with an incidence of 1 in 7000 autopsies; it comes in second after horseshoe kidney. Crossed renal ectopy is associated with an ectopic ureter and generally an ectopic kidney fused with a normal kidney. A 7-month-old boy who had left-to-right crossed non-fused renal ectopy and multicystic renal dysplasia with ureterocele in nonectopic kidney was reported in English language literature. In this article, we present the first case of CRE where surgical intervention has been performed.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Nowadays, due to the increase of imaging diagnosis, we identify easily renal anomalies, and we can choose between a wide range of armamentarium to treat symptomatic stones in those challenging cases. However, there is a lack of evidence and consensus on its use. The aim of this narrative review is to collect all the available data about safety and efficacity of retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) in the treatment of kidney stones associated to a renal anomaly.
RECENT FINDINGS: Renal anomalies are uncommon findings and even more if it has to be associated with renal stones.

A 10-day old male calf exhibited multiple congenital anomalies of the urinary and gastrointestinal tracts, including renal fusion (horseshoe kidney), ureteral fusion, rectovesicular fistula, and atresia ani. In horseshoe kidney, the organs were fused together at the caudal poles. The left kidney and cranial half of right kidney were shrunken, while the remaining lobules were hypertrophic. Ureters were fused cranially and bifurcated caudally. The terminal rectum was narrowed and connected with the bladder. The anus was imperforate. The cause of these anomalies could not be determined.

BACKGROUND: Endourologic interventions for urolithiasis in patients with anomalous kidneys can be challenging, and comparisons between these interventions are not well studied. We aim to compare the safety, outcomes and complications of retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) versus percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in patients with urolithiasis in anomalous kidneys.
METHODS: A propensity score-matched pair analysis (PSM) was performed on pooled patient data from 20 centers. 569 patients with anomalous kidneys (horseshoe kidney [HSK], ectopic kidney, malrotated kidney) and urolithiasis who rec

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Horseshoe kidney (HSK) is a renal congenital abnormality characterized by the fusion of the lower poles of both kidneys via an isthmus. In robotic assisted surgery, HSK presents challenges due to its atypical anatomy, including aberrant vasculature and restricted renal mobility, complicating operative planning and execution across urologic surgeries. This review investigates the feasibility of robotic assisted surgery in HSK, aiming to address the unique surgical considerations the abnormality poses.
RECENT FINDINGS: A targeted literature review was conducted using PubMed a

Identification of a neonatal horseshoe kidney in the emergency department is uncommon but has implications for future healthcare planning for patients. We present a case of a neonate with bloody diapers who was evaluated with renal point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) that identified a horseshoe kidney. The ultrasound was remarkable for its clear visualization of the isthmus of the horseshoe kidney in the midline abdomen. Midline interrogation is not part of the routine technique for ultrasound imaging of the kidney but should be considered when the limits of the lower pole of bilateral kidneys ar

A 67-year-old woman presented with bloody stools to a local physician. Lower gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a type 3 all-circumferential tumor at descending colon. She was diagnosed with descending colon cancer and referred to our hospital for surgery. Preoperative computed tomography(CT)revealed a horseshoe kidney. We performed single-incision laparoscopic colectomy for descending colon cancer(cT3cN0cM0, cStageⅡa)complicated by a horseshoe kidney. The surgery was performed safely without any additional injuries. In patients with horseshoe kidneys, abnormalities have been reported in the
