Antisocial pool rewarding does not deter public cooperation.

Rewarding cooperation is in many ways expected behaviour from social players. However, strategies that promote antisocial behaviour are also surprisingly common, not just in human societies, but also among eusocial insects and bacteria. Examples include sanctioning of individuals who behave prosocially, or rewarding of free-riders who do not contribute to collective enterprises. We therefore study the public goods game with antisocial and prosocial pool rewarding in order to determine the potential negative consequences on the effectiveness of positive incentives to promote cooperation. Beyond "toxicity:" Rethinking rage, rivalry, and regulation in online games.

The nomenclature used to describe harmful behavior in gaming remains vague and inconsistently applied. "Toxicity" has become the dominant label, yet it functions as an umbrella term encompassing heterogeneous behaviors that differ by context, intent, and cultural norms. This conceptual ambiguity obscures underlying psychological mechanisms that are critical for designing effective interventions. This article looks beyond descriptors to focus on psychological dynamics and how they can inform effective prevention efforts. We conducted a conceptual analysis integrating mimetic theory with existin

Influence of Avatar Identification on the Attraction of Virtual Reality Games: Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: In gaming, the embodied interaction experience of avatars serves as a key to emotional sublimation in artistic creation. This presents the emotional expression of art in a more vivid form, which is a critical factor in the high attractiveness of virtual reality (VR) games to players. Intertwined with players' physiological and psychological responses, immersion is an essential element for enhancing gaming attractiveness. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore how to help players establish a sense of identity with their embodied avatars in VR game environments and enhance the attrac

Effectiveness in learning complex problem solving and salivary ion indices of psychological stress and activation.

Following Hinton et al. (1992, Biol. Psychol. 33, 63-71) and Richter et al. (1995, Biol. Psychol. 39, 131-142) ionic concentration of [K+] in unstimulated saliva was predicted to rise with perceived challenge, while lowered [Na+] was expected when experiencing psychological stress (PS). Subjects had to learn an engaging complex problem-solving 'game', via positive and negative feed-back on three 'games' lasting 2.5-3.0 h overall. Comparisons were made between three groups: (1) high success; (2) partial success ('strugglers'); and (3) total failure to learn. Saliva was sampled after resting and

Public-private partnerships for UAV-assisted emergency medical services in aging communities: an evolutionary game approach.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the current "market failure" in the large-scale deployment of UAV-assisted automated external defibrillator (AED) delivery networks for aging communities, and to explore innovative "Public-Private Partnership" (PPP) business models to overcome the "cold-start" institutional deadlock. METHODS: This study introduces a three-party evolutionary game model comprising community representatives, medical institutions, and UAV operators. By integrating principles of "health economics," we simulated the interactive decision-making processes under bounded rationality. Multi-scenari

To clean or not to clean: the free-rider problem in sequentially shared resources.

Shared resources enhance productivity, yet at the same time open pathways for biological and digital contamination, turning physical or digital hygiene into a cooperation dilemma prone to free-riding. Here, we introduce a game of sequential sharing of common resources, an empirically parameterized evolutionary model of population dynamics in sequential-use settings such as gyms or shared workspaces. The success of the strategies implemented in the model, which involve equipment cleaning before or after use, is based on the trade-offs between cleaning costs, contamination risks and social incen

Many-strategy games in groups with relatives and the evolution of coordinated cooperation.

Humans often cooperate in groups with friends and family members with varying degrees of genetic relatedness. Past kin selection can also be relevant to interactions between strangers, explaining how the cooperation first arose in the ancestral population. However, modelling the effects of relatedness is difficult when the benefits of cooperation scale nonlinearly with the number of cooperators (e.g., economies of scale). Here, we present a direct fitness method for rigorously accounting for kin selection in n-player interactions with m discrete strategies, where a genetically homophilic group

Tripartite game analysis of online public opinion evolution in major epidemics in the context of life sciences.

In the face of a sudden major epidemic, people's panic may likely lead to the disruption of the public opinion ecosystem and the disorder of public opinion order. Therefore, clarifying the key main bodies and mechanisms in governing online public opinion is of crucial significance for effectively managing and guiding it. Firstly, based on the sentiment analysis of opinion leaders, an evolutionary game model involving the government, netizens, and opinion leaders was constructed. It analyzed the gaming relationships among relevant stakeholders in the process of online opinion dissemination. The

The Singaporean model in public goods dilemmas with benevolent leaders and bribery.

Public goods dilemmas are at the heart of some of the greatest challenges of our time, including climate inaction, growing inequality, and the overuse of natural resources. The public goods game in which cooperators contribute to a common pool that is then shared equally with defectors who contribute nothing captures the gist of the problem. Cooperators therefore cannot prevail, which ultimately leads to the tragedy of the commons. Actions such as punishment, rewards, and exclusion have been shown to help, but they are costly, therefore rendering cooperators second-order free-riders due to the

The Measles and Free Riders.

This article takes up a game-theoretic perspective on California's recently passed bill (SB 277) that closes all nonmedical exemptions for school-mandated vaccination. Such a perspective characterizes parental decisions to vaccinate their children as a collective action problem and reveals the presence of an incentive to free ride-to enjoy the benefits of others' efforts to vaccinate their children without vaccinating one's own. This article defends California's legislation as a reasonable means of overcoming the free rider problem and of ensuring that the burdens of vaccination are shared equ

The Effect of Incentives and Meta-incentives on the Evolution of Cooperation.

Although positive incentives for cooperators and/or negative incentives for free-riders in social dilemmas play an important role in maintaining cooperation, there is still the outstanding issue of who should pay the cost of incentives. The second-order free-rider problem, in which players who do not provide the incentives dominate in a game, is a well-known academic challenge. In order to meet this challenge, we devise and analyze a meta-incentive game that integrates positive incentives (rewards) and negative incentives (punishments) with second-order incentives, which are incentives for oth

Motion sickness susceptibility and solution choice in a pragmatic paradox.

This paper reports on an experiment which employed a classic paradox, known as the 'prisoner's dilemma', to explore possible differences in problem solving preference across a spectrum of motion sickness susceptibility. A mathematical form of the problem was used in which the subject was asked to imagine playing a game without communicating with his hypothetical partner. There were three possible solutions to the problem, a win-win, a lose-lose, and a win-lose solution. The results support the contention that a cognitive bias exists across a spectrum of motion sickness susceptibility, highly m

Development and validation of the resource loss due to reduction in gaming time scale among adolescent internet gamers in China.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent internet gaming disorder (IGD) is prevalent and positively associated with gaming time, a reduction of which is a common means of IGD prevention/treatment. Personal/interpersonal resource losses due to the reduction in gaming time (RL-RGT) are plausible. According to the Conservation of Resource (COR) theory, RL-RGT may cause mental distress and maladaptive behaviors. No study has investigated such relationships, partially due to the lack of validated tools assessing RL-RGT. This study aimed to develop and validate such a scale (RL-RGTS). METHODS: A cross-sectional surv

A Video Game for Brazilian T1D Children about Knowledge of Disease and Self-care: A Methodological Study.

BACKGROUND: Video games are interactive technologies able to support children in health promotion, behavior changes, and chronic disease self-management. The use of health behavior change determinants in video game design can increase its effectiveness. This study describes the process of designing a video game for Brazilian children with T1D clarifying the use of health behavior change determinants that may influence self-management behaviors. METHODS: This was a methodological study based on health behavior change theories and the user-centered design approach. The results of a qualitative

Effects of cognitive reappraisal on gaming craving and inhibitory control in adolescents with internet gaming disorder.

OBJECTIVE: According to the dual-system theory of addiction, increased gaming craving and diminished inhibitory control constitute the core mechanisms underlying internet gaming disorder (IGD). However, developing effective interventions targeting these mechanisms remains challenging. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of cognitive reappraisal strategies on gaming craving and inhibitory control in adolescents with IGD. METHOD: Experiment 1 recruited 60 adolescents with IGD (Mage ± SE = 15.58 ± 0.12, all male and of Asian descent), employing a cue-reactivity paradigm to examine

GABAergic modulation of human social interaction in a prisoner's dilemma model by acute administration of alprazolam.

Recent work in neuroeconomics has used game theory paradigms to examine neural systems that subserve human social interaction and decision making. Attempts to modify social interaction through pharmacological manipulation have been less common. Here we show dose-dependent modification of human social behavior in a prisoner's dilemma model after acute administration of the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-A modulating benzodiazepine alprazolam. Nine healthy adults received doses of placebo, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg alprazolam in a counterbalanced within-subject design, while completing multiple test bloc…

Cocaine use disorder in females is associated with altered social decision-making: a study with the prisoner's dilemma and the ultimatum game.

BACKGROUND: Chronic cocaine use is associated with cognitive deficits, including poor performance on neuropsychological tasks of memory, executive functions, theory of mind and decision-making. However, the relationship between cocaine use disorder and social decision-making remains unclear. This is particularly relevant given the fact that many cocaine abusers present impairments in social functioning. In this sense, game theory paradigms have been helping to comprehend the behavior of psychiatric patients when they directly engage in social situations, which may better approximate many of th…

Bargaining-based cost sharing shapes the evolution of cooperation in snowdrift games.

Cost sharing in the snowdrift game is usually determined only by the strategies of interacting individuals. However, in many collective tasks, the division of cost also depends on whether the participants can reach an acceptable agreement. We, therefore, propose a bargaining-based snowdrift game in which each individual has a bargaining parameter describing the fraction of the cost that the individual would prefer the other participant to bear. In a cooperator-defector interaction, the cost is shared only when their bargaining preferences are compatible; otherwise, the cooperator bears the ful

Evolution of cooperation in a hierarchical society with corruption control.

Punishment is widely recognized as a potential promoter in sustaining or even enhancing public cooperation, but it meanwhile induces the problem of second-order free-riders. Particularly, recent evidence shows that costly punishment can be maintained if punishers may engage in corruption. However, how to reduce or eliminate incidents of corruption has been the enduring conundrum in human society. As power asymmetries are associated with hierarchies, we investigate how costly punishment affects the evolution of cooperation in the cases without and with corruption control. In the absence of corr
