Postprandial changes in gastrointestinal function and transit in cystic fibrosis assessed by Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a multi-system genetic disorder affecting >72,000 people worldwide. Most CF patients experience gastrointestinal symptoms and can develop complications. However, the mechanisms of CF gut disease are not well understood. We evaluated gut function and transit in CF using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We hypothesised oro-caecal transit time (OCTT) is longer in CF; with lower small bowel water content (SBWC). METHODS: Twelve CF patients aged 12-40 years and 12 age and sex-matched controls underwent serial MRIs over 1 day with standardised meals. The primary

Gastrointestinal transit, post-prandial lipaemia and satiety following 3 days high-fat diet in men.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: High-fat (HF) diets of 2 weeks have been shown to accelerate gastric emptying (GE). To date, no studies have shown any alteration in GE following shorter HF diets. The aim of this study was to assess if an HF, high-energy diet of 3 days can adapt gastrointestinal (GI) transit, blood lipids and satiety. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Eleven male volunteers participated in a study consisting of three, 3-day interventions each separated by a test day. During the first intervention, volunteers recorded their diet. In the second and third interventions, volunteers repeated their food dia

Gastrointestinal transit of model mini-tablet controlled release oral dosage forms in fasted human volunteers.

The aim of this study was to compare the gastrointestinal transit of multiple unit, small diameter (3.2 mm), non-disintegrating tablets of differing densities with results previously reported in the same volunteers in the fasted state for larger diameter (6.6 and 12.2 mm) tablets. The gastrointestinal transit was observed with gamma-scintigraphy at various intervals over a 9-h period to give an accurate assessment of the transit characteristics. The value for the median emptying time of the first light tablet was significantly shorter than that for the dense tablet, but the total emptying time

The herbal medicine, Dai-Kenchu-to, accelerates delayed gastrointestinal transit after the operation in rats.

BACKGROUND: Post-operative ileus (POI) is a transient bowel dysmotility after operation. We have previously shown that laparotomy alone significantly delayed gastrointestinal (GI) transit, compared to anesthesia alone. The GI transit was further delayed after laparotomy plus intestinal manipulation. Dai-Kenchu-to (DKT), an herbal medicine, has been used for treating adhesive bowel obstruction in Japan. We studied whether DKT improves delayed GI transit after the operation, with or without morphine administration in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Under isoflurane anesthesia, POI was induced by l

Prucalopride accelerates gastrointestinal and colonic transit in patients with constipation without a rectal evacuation disorder.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Prucalopride (PRU) is a selective benzofuran 5-hydroxytryptamine(4)-receptor agonist with gastrointestinal and colonic prokinetic activities. We evaluated the effects of PRU on gastrointestinal and colonic transit in patients with constipation. METHODS: Gastrointestinal and colonic transit were measured over 48 hours in 40 patients who fulfilled modified Rome I criteria for functional constipation. Patients had no evidence of a rectal evacuation disorder. Subjects were randomized to receive a daily dose of 2 or 4 mg PRU or placebo in a double-blind, parallel-group design. E

[Effects of various prokinetic drugs on gastrointestinal transit times in patients with progressive systemic scleroderma].

The intestine is involved in about half of the cases with progressive-systemic sclerosis. Intestinal transit disturbances which are caused by neuropathy of the enteric nerve system occur frequently. However, upto-date only few studies which determined the effect of prokinetic drugs exist. Patients with intestinal involvement caused by progressive-systemic sclerosis were treated with the prokinetic drugs cisapride (20 mg, TID; n = 9), erythromycin (250 mg, TID; n = 7) and octreotide (50 micrograms s. c., at night time; n = 5) over a period of four weeks. At study entry and after each treatment

The description of the gastrointestinal transit of pellets assessed by gamma scintigraphy using statistical moments.

The gastrointestinal transit of multiple units (e.g., pellets), as determined by gamma scintigraphy, has been characterized by the application of statistical moments. Stomach emptying profiles can be described comprehensively by Mean Gastric Residence Time (MGRT) and Variance of Gastric Residence Time (VGRT) and caecum arrival data by Mean Caecum Arrival Time (MCAT) and Variance of Caecal Arrival Time (VCAT). This maximizes the data available, which is not the case when only described as 50% values. The statistical moments provide different information about the data observed compared to the c

A preponderance of gastrointestinal cancer patients transition into cachexia syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Cancer cachexia is frequently documented by self-reported, single time-point weight histories. This approach lacks the granularity needed to fully elucidate the progression of cachexia syndrome. This study aimed to longitudinally assess body weight changes pre- and post-cancer diagnosis in gastrointestinal (GI) cancer patients. METHODS: Body weights and relevant clinical data recorded in the electronic health record 12 months pre- and post-GI cancer (colorectal, gastroesophageal, hepatobiliary and pancreatic) diagnosis were extracted. Weight loss was categorized by the Internation

Non-invasive measurement of accelerated gastrointestinal transit in pediatric patients using Contrast-enhanced Multispectral optoacoustic tomography.

Functional intestinal disorders are common; however, current imaging modalities are limited. Contrast-enhanced Multispectral optoacoustic tomography (CE-MSOT) represents a novel, non-invasive, and radiation-free imaging technique that enables assessment of gastrointestinal transit time through the use of orally administered contrast agents. This could aid in symptom evaluation and diagnostic clarification in bowel disorders. A clinical pilot-study was conducted (Registry: ClinicalTrials.gov, TRN: NCT06617364, Registration date: 24 September 2024) involving 10 pediatric patients presenting with

Assessment of the effect of prokinetic drugs on transit time and gastrointestinal cleanliness in capsule endoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic examinations are increasingly used in veterinary medicine. Examination using flexible endoscopes is limited to the anterior gastrointestinal tract (panendoscopy) and colon (colonoscopy), while a significant part of the small intestine remains unexamined. Capsular endoscopy is increasingly used, allowing macroscopic assessment of the entire digestive tract. The current study assessed the effect of prokinetic drugs on transit time and cleanliness of the tested part of the digestive tract in capsule endoscopy. METHODS: The study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of two prok

Tracking the journey: Gastrointestinal transit and intraluminal pH dynamics in aging populations using wireless motility capsule.

INTRODUCTION: Gastrointestinal (GI) changes may alter drug absorption, potentially impacting both efficacy and safety of oral pharmacotherapy. However, the GI physiology is rarely studied in the aging population. This study aimed to explore GI transit time and pH in geriatric inpatients and older adults, and compare these findings with those from young volunteers. METHODS: A prospective study was performed in geriatric inpatients and community-dwelling adults aged ≥ 75 years. GI transit and intraluminal pH were assessed by using a wireless motility capsule system. Participants' data were pool

Gastrointestinal transit time of radiopaque ingested foreign bodies in children: experience of two paediatric tertiary centres.

INTRODUCTION: Foreign body (FB) ingestion is a common paediatric emergency. While guidelines exist for urgent intervention, less is known of the natural progress of FBs passing through the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). We reviewed these FB transit times in an outpatient cohort. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on all children (≤18 years) treated for radiopaque FB ingestion at two major tertiary paediatric centres from 2015 to 2016. Demographic data, FB types, outcomes and hospital visits (emergency department [ED] and outpatient) were recorded. All cases discharged from the ED wi

Associations Between Physical Activity and Gastrointestinal Transit Times in People with Normal Weight, Overweight, and Obesity.

BACKGROUND: Rapid gastric emptying is associated with obesity and overeating, whereas delayed gastric emptying is associated with anorexia. Acute effects of exercise on gastric emptying have been investigated extensively, but the influence of habitual physical activity on gastric emptying and transit time in other regions of the gastrointestinal tract is poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to investigate associations between objectively measured habitual physical activity and gastrointestinal transit times in adults with varying degrees of adiposity. METHODS: 50 adults (58% women

HSV1/2 Genital Infection in Mice Cause Reversible Delayed Gastrointestinal Transit: A Model for Enteric Myopathy.

In an interesting investigation by Khoury-Hanold et al. (1), genital infection of mice with herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1) were reported to cause multiple pelvic organ involvement and obstruction. A small subset of mice succumbed after the first week of HSV1 infection. The authors inferred that the mice died due to toxic megacolon. In a severe form of mechanical and/or functional obstruction involving gross dilation of the colon and profound toxemia, the presentation is called "toxic megacolon." The representative observations by Khoury-Hanold likely do not resemble toxic megacolon. The colon w
