BACKGROUND: Technology-facilitated gender-based violence is extension of existing power dynamics and patriarchal systems that continue to oppress and marginalize women and girls. However, the mechanisms through which technology enables such violence and its effects on victims remain underexplored, particularly in the context of sub-Saharan Africa.
OBJECTIVES: This review aimed to examine how technology facilitates gender-based violence and to explore its impact on women and girls in sub-Saharan Africa.
METHODS: This scoping review was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) met…

BACKGROUND: Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, concerns were raised about unintended effects of measures taken to prevent its spread, on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). The United Nations called for understanding how national lockdowns put young people at risk of SGBV. This research is particularly needed in contexts such as South Africa, where pre-existing levels of SGBV are high and limited data has been released.
METHODS: This mixed-method longitudinal study characterised trajectories of household-level and partner-level SGBV exposure over 6 months, approximately 1 year after the i…

Sexual- and gender-based violence (SGBV) remains a widespread public health crisis, with women in rural, remote, and northern communities across Canada disproportionately impacted. Despite well-documented barriers to accessing services in rural areas, there is limited national data on hospital-based care for SGBV-related injuries. This study utilizes the 2016 Canadian Community Health and Environment Cohort, hospital administrative records, and the Index of Remoteness to examine emergency room use (ERU) for SGBV across urban and rural regions between 2015 and 2021, including the period of the …

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) is associated with poorer engagement in HIV care and treatment. However, there is a dearth of research on the psychological (eg, mental health) and structural (eg, food insecurity) factors that mediate and moderate this association. GBV could lead to poor mental health, which in turn affects adherence, whereas food insecurity could worsen the effect of GBV on engagement in care. This study uses data from the Women's Interagency HIV Study to address these gaps.
METHODS: Women completed 6 assessments from 2013 to 2016 on GBV, mental health, food insecurit…

OBJECTIVE: To compare the prevalence of gender-based violence among immigrant and Spanish women. To describe their responses to this problem and the possible differences. To identify specific interventions to deal with gender-based violence in immigrant women in Spain.
METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional survey through a self-administered questionnaire in 10,202 women attending primary care in Spain (2006-2007). A content analysis was performed of the follow-up report of law 1/2004 of integral protection measures against gender violence sent by each Spanish region (2005) and the most rece…

In 2017, the #MeToo movement garnered international attention when millions of people used the hashtag to share personal experiences of sexual violence. The present study examines how noncelebrity users discussed their experiences of sexual victimization through a qualitative and quantitative content analysis of a random sample of #MeToo tweets (N = 1,427). We found that survivors prioritized details about the "who," "what," "where," "when," "why," and "how" of trauma in their disclosures. Key themes in their responses included child sexual abuse (22.7%), long-term adverse effects (17.6%), and

BACKGROUND: Many people experience forms of gender-based violence and harassment (GBVH) in the context of their work. This includes a wide range of experiences, from subtle expressions of hostility to physical assault, that can also be of a sexual nature (e.g., sexual harassment or assault). This systematic review aimed to summarize findings about the prospective associations of work-related GBVH with people's health and occupational situation.
METHODS: We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Scopus, Web of Science, MEDLINE and PsycINFO w…

This article reports the findings from a new form of review: a focused mapping review and synthesis. The aim was to create a contemporary, snapshot profile of the nature and scope of gender-based violence (GBV) studies conducted in Europe. GBV is one of the most prevalent human rights violations in the world affecting mainly women and girls. The policy context of GBV in Europe has gathered momentum in recent years, but we do not have a clear picture of how this relates to research activity. Thirteen journals were purposively selected on their likelihood to publish GBV research. All articles pu…

BACKGROUND: Rising contamination of illicitly-manufactured benzodiazepines in unregulated opioids in Canada poses concern as their strong sedative effects may increase vulnerability to violence for people who use drugs (PWUD), particularly women. The current study longitudinally examined the relationship between suspected exposure to benzodiazepines (SEB) and violent victimization, assessing for gender differences.
METHODS: Data were drawn from 1049 participants (40.9 % women) from three harmonized prospective cohorts of community-recruited PWUD in Vancouver, Canada between 2021 and 2023. We

Workplace violence (WPV) impacts all levels of the health workforce, including the individual provider, organization, and society. While there is a substantial body of literature on various aspects of WPV against the health workforce, gender-based WPV (GB-WPV) has received less attention. Violence in both the workplace and broader society is rooted in gendered socio-economic, cultural, and institutional factors. Developing a robust understanding of GB-WPV is crucial to explore the differing experiences, responses, and outcomes of GB-WPV with respect to gender. We conducted a scoping review and

Conflict settings are often the context of some of the highest rates of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). Although women are disproportionately the victims of SGBV, they are not the only victims. Indirect impacts of SGBV also impact men, families, and communities. Examining SGBV as only a woman's concern reinforces the hegemonic gender-binary view that SGBV somehow does not include men, who can be direct victims of SGBV, family members of female victims of SGBV, and/or perpetrators of SGBV. This qualitative study seeks to fill a gap by exploring the impact of SGBV on individuals, famili…

BACKGROUND: Women living in Ohio Appalachia experience cervical cancer at disproportionately high rates. Intimate partner and sexual gender-based violence (GBV) and smoking are independent risk factors for cervical cancer and interact to heighten risk. Appalachian women smoke at higher rates than other Ohio women, but little is known about GBV exposure in the region. The purpose of this study was to establish prevalence of women's exposure to GBV in Ohio Appalachia and examine the association between GBV and smoking among women in the region.
METHODS: A two-phase address-based random sampling…

Gender-based violence in high schools undermines adolescents' rights, well-being and opportunities at a critical moment in their psycho-social development. While violence prevalence has been partially assessed in sub-Saharan Africa, there remain gaps in understanding how adolescents themselves define, interpret and navigate these situations. This phenomenological qualitative study conducted in four high schools in Kinshasa (DR Congo) centres adolescent voices to explore how they perceive, legitimise, and manage school-based gender-based violence. It aims to identify the individual beliefs and …

BACKGROUND: There is a high prevalence of gender-based violence (GBV) victimization among young Ethiopian women, including in universities, where female enrollment is low but growing. Understanding factors contributing to GBV in this context and students' perspectives on gender, relationships, and interpersonal violence is essential to creating effective interventions to prevent GBV and support female students' rights and wellbeing.
METHODS: In-depth interviews (IDIs) and focus group discussions (FGDs) were held with male and female students (male IDI n = 36, female IDI n = 34, male FGD n = 1…

BACKGROUND: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in war-affected zones is a pressing public health issue, as these individuals often endure compounded trauma from both the violence they experience and the broader context of conflict. Post-traumatic stress disorders are overlooked in Ethiopian society, despite the country having the greatest number of victims of violence and its detrimental effects on mental health. This study aimed to explore Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder among Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Survivors attending one…

This study examines the coping strategies used by refugee women who have survived gender-based violence (GBV) across multiple stages of migration. Drawing on interviews with 50 urban refugee women in Nairobi, Kenya, the study explores how coping processes shift or remain consistent throughout the migration trajectory using the migration process framework. Although GBV is widespread among forcibly displaced women globally, limited research has investigated how survivors appraise and manage the stress of these experiences over time and within changing displacement contexts. Guided by Lazarus and…

BACKGROUND: Previous literature emphasized that females with different age-groups are subjected to psychological, physical, and sexual abuse. There are many possible sources of violence against females including intimate partners, parents, family members, cousins, neighbors, and any man with authority or power.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the prevalence and sources of different violence acts among the Jordanian female youth (18-24 years).
DESIGN: A cross-sectional, egocentric social network design was used to collect data from 960 youth in Jordan (480 men and 480 women) aged between 18 years and 2

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) is a significant public health concern affecting one in three women globally. GBV is deeply rooted in gender inequality and societal constructs of gender roles, which significantly contribute to its prevalence and impact on women. Injury to the head, face, and neck, including broken teeth and jaws, is common in GBV, as is dental neglect, indicating a role for dental care. However, the impact of maxillofacial injuries or poor oral health and the role dental professionals may play in supporting individuals experiencing GBV are often overlooked. This review…
