Improving polio vaccination coverage in Nigeria through the use of geographic information system technology.

BACKGROUND: Historically, microplanning for polio vaccination campaigns in Nigeria relied on inaccurate and incomplete hand-drawn maps, resulting in the exclusion of entire settlements and missed children. The goal of this work was to create accurate, coordinate-based maps for 8 polio-endemic states in northern Nigeria to improve microplanning and support tracking of vaccination teams, thereby enhancing coverage, supervision, and accountability. METHODS: Settlement features were identified in the target states, using high-resolution satellite imagery. Field teams collected names and geocoordi

All-terrain vehicle injuries in Texas, mapping the path to intervention with a geographic information system.

The state of Texas was ranked 10th for all-terrain vehicle-related deaths among all states from 2007-2009. Health Service Region 4/5N of eastern Texas has a statistically significant higher rate of all-terrain vehicle-related injuries in children under the age of 18 than Texas as a whole (p < 0.001.) It is unknown why east Texas has a higher all-terrain vehicle-related injury rate. A retrospective analysis of the registry of the Texas Trauma Service Area G, which serves the east Texas area, from the years 2004-2010 was performed. Variations within the region were assessed using a geographic in

Role of remote sensing, geographical information system (GIS) and bioinformatics in kala-azar epidemiology.

Visceral leishmaniasis or kala-azar is a potent parasitic infection causing death of thousands of people each year. Medicinal compounds currently available for the treatment of kala-azar have serious side effects and decreased efficacy owing to the emergence of resistant strains. The type of immune reaction is also to be considered in patients infected with Leishmania donovani (L. donovani). For complete eradication of this disease, a high level modern research is currently being applied both at the molecular level as well as at the field level. The computational approaches like remote sensing

Monitoring the Overall Quality of Groundwater Using a Geographic Information System in the Angads Plain (Oujda, Morocco).

The future of groundwater is one of the key challenges for sustainable water management, hence the need to monitor its overall quality. The objective of this work is to assess the overall quality and determine the spatiotemporal evolution of the Angads aquifer in northeastern Morocco in 2014 and 2020, based on the parameters NH4 +, NO3 -, EC, Cl-, and FC, as well as the Geographic Information System (GIS). The results of the comparison of these five parameters between 2014 and 2020 show a general increase in NH4 + and a decrease in NO3 - and FC at most sampling points. These changes could be a

Use of Aedes aegypti Oviposition Surveillance and a Geographic Information System for Planning Anti-Vectorial Measures.

Arboviruses transmitted by Aedes aegypti pose a threat to global public health. Because there are no vaccines or drugs available, the prevention of these diseases in Argentina is based on integrated vector control. In this work, the spatiotemporal dynamics of the vector distribution was analyzed by monitoring oviposition. This information allowed the planning of anti-vector interventions and the evaluation of their effect on the relative abundance of mosquito populations in San Ramón de la Nueva Orán. Observed data were compared with the eggs expected via a statistical model based on meteorolo

Immunity to poliovirus in Afghanistan: A household sampling method for serological assessment based on geographical information systems.

Afghanistan continues to experience challenges affecting polio eradication. Mass polio vaccination campaigns, which aim to protect children under the age of 5, are a key eradication strategy. To date, the polio program in Afghanistan has only employed facility-based seroprevalence surveys, which can be subject to sampling bias. We describe the feasibility in implementing a cross-sectional household poliovirus seroprevalence survey based on geographical information systems (GIS) in three districts. Digital maps with randomly selected predetermined starting points were provided to teams, with a

A Geographic Information System Approach to Map Tick Exposure Risk at a Scale for Public Health Intervention.

Tick-borne disease control and prevention have been largely ineffective compared to the control of other vector-borne diseases. Although control strategies exist, they are costly or ineffective at large spatial scales. We need tools to target these strategies to places of highest tick exposure risk. Here we present a geographic information system (GIS) method for mapping predicted tick exposure risk at a 200 m by 200 m resolution, appropriate for public health intervention. We followed the approach used to map tick habitat suitability over large areas. We used drag-cloth sampling to measure th

Accuracy of two geocoding methods for geographic information system-based exposure assessment in epidemiological studies.

BACKGROUND: Environmental exposure assessment based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and study participants' residential proximity to environmental exposure sources relies on the positional accuracy of subjects' residences to avoid misclassification bias. Our study compared the positional accuracy of two automatic geocoding methods to a manual reference method. METHODS: We geocoded 4,247 address records representing the residential history (1990-2008) of 1,685 women from the French national E3N cohort living in the Rhône-Alpes region. We compared two automatic geocoding methods, a free…
