Effectiveness of scenario-based simulation teaching on advance care planning competencies in geriatric nurses: A quasi-experimental study.

AIM: To compare the effectiveness of scenario-based simulation versus case-based teaching in improving geriatric nurses' multiple competencies for Advance Care Planning (ACP). BACKGROUND: Geriatric nurses are pivotal in ACP but often lack adequate preparedness, necessitating training that addresses both knowledge and behavioral-attitudinal components. Simulation-based education offers a safe environment to develop such complex clinical skills. DESIGN: A quasi-experimental, non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. METHOD: Within a provincial geriatric nursing training program in…

Feasibility of a Geriatric Assessment to Detect and Quantify Sarcopenia and Physical Functioning in German Nursing Home Residents-A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Entering into a nursing home leads to increased immobility and further reductions in physical and cognitive functioning. As a result, there is a risk of sarcopenia, which is characterized by loss of muscle strength, muscle mass and physical functioning. To our knowledge, the feasibility of sarcopenia screening has not yet been performed in the German nursing home setting. METHODS: For sarcopenia screening, the specifications of EWGSOP2 were applied. The quantification of sarcopenia was performed according to the corresponding cut-off values. The collection of anthropometric data a

Occupational contact sensitization in female geriatric nurses: Data of the Information Network of Departments of Dermatology (IVDK) 2005-2014.

BACKGROUND: Geriatric nurses (GN) have a high risk of occupational contact dermatitis (OCD), with chronic irritant contact dermatitis predominating. However, allergic contact dermatitis is an important issue as well. Little is known whether the relevant occupational allergen spectrum reported in the 1990s, including fragrances, preservatives, rubber chemicals and ingredients of surface disinfectants to be the most common sensitizers in GN, is still valid. OBJECTIVES: To monitor the current allergen spectrum in GN with OCD and verify the validity of the patch test recommendations (baseline-, p

Geriatric Telemanagement of Health Conditions (GET HEALTH) in Nursing Home Residents Recently Discharged From the Hospital: Protocol for a Before-After Study.

BACKGROUND: Nursing home (NH) residents have a high burden of multimorbidity and disability and are frequently hospitalized. Comprehensive geriatric assessment might reduce hospitalization. However, few geriatricians are working in NHs. Technology might be used to overcome this problem. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to verify if a geriatric telemanagement model improves patient outcomes in NH residents recently discharged from the hospital. METHODS: Clinical outcomes of NH residents recently discharged from the hospital are compared before and after the implementation of GTM, where a geriatrici

Rehabilitation of Frail Older Adults after Hip Fracture Surgery: Predictors for the Length of Geriatric Rehabilitation Stay at a Skilled Nursing Home.

Background: Approximately 50% of older patients hospitalized for hip fractures are admitted to a geriatric rehabilitation department at a skilled nursing home. Given the wide variation in rehabilitation stay lengths, predicting the length of stay upon hospital discharge would help manage patients' recovery expectations and create appropriate therapy schedules. Existing literature on length of stay predictors included both acute hospital and in-hospital rehabilitation phases or involved small sample sizes. The present study aims to identify predictors for the length of geriatric rehabilitation

Teleguided Point-of-Care Ultrasound for Fluid Assessment in Geriatric Inpatients Performed by Nurses and Medical Students: Prospective Observational Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Fluid assessment in geriatric inpatients is challenging, as clinical signs are often unreliable. Inferior vena cava (IVC) ultrasound provides a rapid, noninvasive estimation of intravascular volume. Teleguided point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) allows examiners without prior ultrasound experience to perform scans under real-time supervision. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility, accuracy, efficiency, and user satisfaction of remote-guided IVC ultrasound performed by medical students and nurses without prior ultrasound experience in a geriatric inpatient setting.

Frailty care beyond the geriatric ward: A pre-implementation qualitative inquiry into anticipated barriers and facilitators to implementing a nurse-led frailty assessment and management programme in a hospital in Singapore.

PURPOSE: Forging frailty-ready hospital systems is crucial given increasing number of frail older patients admitting across hospital services. Yet, systematic frailty identification and management remains lacking beyond specialist geriatric care. Hospital-wide approaches embedding frailty screening and coordinated management into routine care, supported by nurses and multidisciplinary teams, are needed. We developed an Inpatient Nursing Frailty Assessment program (INFA) that delivers nurse-led interventions for geriatric syndromes in mild-to-moderately frail older adults. Evaluating potential
