In November 2005, an outbreak of tularemia occurred among 39 participants in a hare hunt in Hesse, Germany. Previously reported tularemia outbreaks in Germany dated back to the 1950s. We estimated the total number of human alveolar echinococcosis cases in Germany from 2003 through 2005 using the multiple source capture-recapture method. We found a 3-fold higher incidence of the disease than that shown by national surveillance data. We propose a revision of the reporting system to increase case ascertainment.

On the other hand 90% of the notified HB cases in Germany are observed among the general population (including other high-risk groups like i.v. drug abusers etc.). Our routine tests for tropical viruses document that several hundreds of Dengue fever cases are imported into Germany every year. In contrast, hemorrhagic fever cases are rarely diagnosed in Germany. Our investigations suggest that this low number is due to the different living conditions of the local population in the tropics compared with that of travellers from Europe or North America. Improved methods for detecting Dengue virus infections, e.g. three different antibody tests and the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for detection of viral RNA, have been developed.

In Baden-Württemberg in 1994 and 1995 approximately 390 persons fell ill after infection with the tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus. Detailed clinical data were available from 300 patients for further analysis. TBE mostly manifested as meningitis (50%) or meningoencephalitis (38%) and more rarely as encephalomyelitis and/or radiculitis (12%). Four patients with encephalomyelitis died.

Tissue donation is important to reverse cornea-related blindness. Unfortunately, the willingness to make a decision concerning organ and tissue donation while still alive remains low despite all efforts. By analyzing anonymized archived data from 25 654 next-of-kin interviews from our database over a period of 5 years (2013-2018), it was found that only 20.8% of all potential cornea donors have declared their own wishes.
