The etiology of giant cell arteritis (temporal arteritis, cranial arteritis) is still obscure. Polymyalgia rheumatica is probably a stage of the same disease. It causes systemic and localized symptoms, usually in patients older than 55 years, and is not uncommon as a cause of loss of vision. The sedimentation rate is unusually high. The diagnosis is defintively established by biopsy. The response to steroid therapy is dramatic.

In a retrospective survey we found that five (8.5%) out of 59 women with giant-cell arteritis had a history of thyrotoxicosis. This was significantly higher than in a control group of patients. Giant-cell arteritis and thyrotoxicosis occurred simultaneously in two cases. Knowledge of this association is of clinical use and is further evidence for an immunological basis for giant-cell arteritis.

BACKGROUND: Glucocorticoids (GCs) are standard treatment for giant cell arteritis (GCA). Many patients experience relapses or GC-related toxicity. Secukinumab, a fully human monoclonal antibody that selectively inhibits interleukin-17A, is being studied as additional therapy for GCA.
METHODS: GCAptAIN was a randomized, parallel-group, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter phase 3 trial. Patients with new-onset or relapsing GCA were initially randomly assigned (2:1) to either 300 mg of secukinumab (SEC-300) or placebo for 52 weeks. After a protocol amendment, patients were randomly ass

Giant cell tumour (GCT) is a benign bone tumour characterised by osteoclastic-like multinucleated cells. This tumour predominantly occurs in adults during the third decade of life, commonly in the distal femur, proximal tibia, distal radius, and sacrum. Treatment options include wide local excision with possible adjuvant therapy depending on tumour size and site. We present a case of an 18-year-old lady with no prior medical history complaining of worsening insidious onset localised back pain and preceding numbness of the bilateral lower limbs, diagnosed with a giant cell tumour of the spine (

Giant cell tumour of bone (GCTB) is a locally aggressive lesion that is difficult to treat as salvaging the joint can be associated with a high rate of local recurrence (LR). We evaluated the risk factors for tumour relapse after treatment of a GCTB of the limbs. A total of 354 consecutive patients with a GCTB underwent joint salvage by curettage and reconstruction with bone graft and/or cement or en bloc resection. Patient, tumour, and treatment factors were analyzed for their impact on LR. Patients treated with denosumab were excluded. There were 53 LRs (15%) at a mean 30.5 months (5 to 116)

Giant cell arteritis is an autoimmune disease of medium and large arteries, characterized by granulomatous inflammation of the three-layered … ytic activity, and support the development of tissue-damaging macrophages, including multinucleated giant cells (Checkpoint 3). Eventually, the vascular lesions are occupied by self-renewing T cells that provide autonomy to the disease process and limit the therapeutic effectiveness of currently used immunosuppressants. The multi-step process deviating protec …

Tenosynovial Giant Cell Tumor (TGCT) is a group of typically benign lesions arising from the synovium of joints, bursae and tendon sheaths. … contain mainly histiocyte-like and synovial cells accompanied by varying numbers of multinucleated giant cells, mononuclear cells, foam cells, inflammatory cells and hemosiderin deposits. CME: Giant Cell Arteritis Abstract. Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is the most common vasculitis among patients over the age of 50. Mainly large vessels are targeted. GCA can be differentiated into cranial and extra-cranial types; thus the symptoms can range from headache, blurred vision and jaw claudication to non-specific symptoms like fatigue, polymyalgia and fever. Complications such as an irreversible loss of vision are critical, which is why timeous diagnosis and treatment are essential. There are some recommendations for treatment, but no defined guidelines exist. Steroids have been the sta

Giant cell tumor is a benign epiphyseo-metaphyseal bone tumor affecting the young patient. It is characterized by an extensive osteolysis, a high potential for recurrence, a risk of malignant transformation and pulmonary metastases. Curettage and cavity filling is the most common treatment, even in the case of a pathological fracture. A wide resection with prosthetic reconstruction must sometimes be considered. Better knowledge of the role of RANK-L in the pathophysiology of these tumors has led to clinical trials involving denosumab. Treatment with denosumab is suggested for inoperable lesion

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a challenging condition to manage because of the potential for acute irreversible vision loss and corticosteroid-related morbidity. Recent developments offer the potential to improve both the assessment and treatment of patients.
RECENT FINDINGS: Vascular imaging is increasingly being used in the diagnostic algorithm for GCA. Results from recent vascular ultrasound and high-resolution cranial MRI studies have led some groups to suggest forgoing temporal artery biopsy (TAB) in selected patients. The treatment armamentarium has been enhanced with

Giant cell arteritis is an inflammatory lesion of the large- and medium-sized arteries, usually involving the temporal arteries of older women. Rarely, the breast has been reported as the primary site of involvement. Patients usually present with breast masses that are tender or painful in most reported cases. The disease may be associated with constitutional symptoms that resemble polymyalgia rheumatica, but most reported cases do not have an established diagnosis of autoimmune disease. Clinically, giant cell arteritis of the breast may mimic breast carcinoma. Establishing the diagnosis is im
