Desquamative gingivitis (DG) can be caused by multiple etiologic factors, such as herpes zoster (HZ) and allergic reactions to drugs. Infrequently, a patient may be affected by two different pathologic conditions simultaneously, capable of causing oral and cutaneous lesions, thereby resulting in one condition being overlooked. Plasma cell gingivitis, an infrequently observed oral condition, has been clinically characterized by diffuse gingival enlargement, erythema and sometimes desquamation. This study compared the subgingival microbiota in periodontal health, gingivitis and initial periodontitis using predominant culture and a DNA probe, checkerboard hybridization method. 56 healthy adult subjects with minimal periodontal attachment loss were clinically monitored at 3-month intervals for 12 months. Fourteen patients admitted to our clinic were found to have desquamative gingivitis. They were treated with doxycycline monohydrate, a semisynthetic tetracycline, for 6 to 8 weeks. In an attempt to determine the frequency of desquamative gingivitis (DG) in pemphigus vulgaris (PV), bullous pemphigoid (BP), cicatricial pemphigoid (CP), and lichen planus (LP), a large series of patients examined and classified in each group during the years 1972 to 1981 were included in this study. Analysis of the clinical data revealed that, of the four skin diseases, CP manifests as DG in 63.6 percent of the cases.
