[Antibiotic sensitivity of the causative agent of glanders].

Sensitivity of the glanders causative agent to 20 antibiotics representing different groups is described. The results of the in vitro studies showed that most of the antibiotics were not active against the glanders causative agent, except for polymyxin M, levomycetin and their combination. Some relative activity was observed with neomycin. The "indicators" method used by the authors for determination of the M. mallei sensitivity to the antibiotics allowed the shortening of the time of the test by 8 to 10 hours.

[Homeostatic changes in monkeys in a model of glanders].

Some aspects of homeostasis impairment in monkeys infected with Pseudomonas mallei were investigated. The levels of the hormonal shifts, complement components, beta 2-microglobulin and prostaglandins evident of the infection severity were estimated. The pathomorphological profiles of various forms of malleus in the primates were studied.

[Immunogenic potential of glanders and melioidosis agents].

Unlike the glanders agent, the superficial structures of the melioidosis agent were demonstrated to be responsible for marked was immunosuppressive activity. Some antigenic fractions suppressing the blast transformation of lymphocytes, reducing the count of T helpers and profoundly potentiating the infection in vivo were isolated from P. pseudomallei cells. The immunogenic and immunosuppressive activities of both agents' superficial structures were studied by high performance chromatography. Antigenic complexes that were able to protect immunized laboratory animals against fatal infections and…

Laboratory-acquired human glanders--Maryland, May 2000.

On May 5, 2000, the Baltimore City Health Department was notified by hospital infection-control staff of a serious systemic febrile illness in a microbiologist whose research at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) involved several pathogenic bacteria, including Burkholderia mallei, the causative agent of glanders. This report summarizes the first human case of glanders in the United States since 1945, and emphasizes the importance of considering occupational exposures among laboratory workers with a febrile illness, the difficulty of characterizing unusua…

Glanders: Historical military use and potential bioterrorism concern.

Burkholderia mallei, the etiological agent of glanders, is a zoonotic bacterium primarily affecting equines and occasionally humans. Although rare today, it remains endemic in certain regions and poses a potential threat to both animal and public health. Historically, B. mallei was among the earliest biological agents used in warfare, and its classification as a Category B bioterrorism agent underscores the need for ongoing vigilance. This review is warranted due to several factors: the limited availability of effective treatments or vaccines, the pathogen's ability to cause severe systemic in…
