The aim of this paper was to investigate the effect of glycerol on experimental endolymphatic hydrops in guinea-pigs. The right endolymphatic sac and duct were obliterated through an extradural posterior fossa approach. Some animals received a 3 g/kg dose of glycerol for a period of 7 days, whereas others received the same dose for 30 days. There continues a significant debate over the best contemporary method for treating trigeminal neuralgia. Glycerol injection into the trigeminal cistern has been used in a consecutive series of 200 patients. A total of 80% of the patients have had good or excellent pain relief. Side effects have been a mild and usually transient numbness and tingling or mild objective sensory deficit to pin and touch in approximately 1/2 of the patients. Peroxisomes (microbodies) are ubiquitous subcellular organelles whose functions in cellular metabolism are not clear. Following glycerol injections for trigeminal neuralgia. Håkanson, Lunsford, Apfelbaum, Beck and Lobosky and Dieckmann, among others, report that few patients have sensory loss and dysesthesia and a high percentage have sustained gratifying relief. Such was not our experience or that of Laitinen, Price, Siegfried, or Takusagawa, among others. Our own disappointing results re initial failures to achieve relief, significant sensory loss including corneal anesthesia and some dysesthesias in 77 patients are described.

Eleven patients suffering from trigeminal neuralgia were treated by percutaneous glycerol trigeminal rhizolysis after visualization of the trigeminal cistern with metrizamide. In 10 of 11 cases treatment was successful and the pain disappeared. The technique of the treatment is described. This form of treatment is recommended as a successful and simple method, especially in the elderly population suffering from trigeminal neuralgia.

ECochG and glycerol test are two kinds of objective examinations for the diagnosis of Ménière's disease. Previous reports showed that the positive rates in both methods vary widely. Rosin esters were prepared by heating rosin with glycerol and intermediate reaction products with different acid values were withdrawn. Salicylic acid granules were encapsulated using a 10 per cent solution of rosin esters in acetone. The coated microcapsules were evaluated for moisture absorption, flow properties and dissolution studies. The results showed that rosin and rosin-glycerol intermediates with acid values of 122, 105 and 55 had excellent moisture protection properties. Dissolution studies showed that these could be used for delayed release of drug.
