Lymphogranuloma venereum, chancroid, and granuloma inguinale are three uncommon bacterial infections in the United States; however, with the increase in immigrants from Asian and South American countries, the incidence of these infections is rising. This article reviews the clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and therapy of these infections.

Two cases of extragenital granuloma inguinale are presented. A 41-year-old female presented with fever, a swollen knee joint and osteolytic lesions involving distal bones, and a 49-year-old male had multiple faecal fistulae in the lower abdomen with extensive involvement of pelvic organs. The diagnostic difficulties presented by such cases and the various types of extragenital pathology that have been described in this disease are discussed.

This paper describes a case of multiple disease in an Aboriginal woman. Granuloma inguinale, of unusual severity and extent, which closely simulated advanced pelvic malignant disease, was included. Some problems of the diagnosis are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the frequencies of HLA antigens in patients with donovanosis and in controls.
DESIGN: HLA Class I, Class II and DQ antigens were detected in patients with genital ulceration caused by donovanosis and in a control group.
SETTING: City Health STD Clinic, King Edward VIII Hospital, Durban, South Africa. Participants--Sixty (47 men, 13 women) patients with donovanosis.
RESULTS: HLA B57 was detected in nine of 60 (15%) with donovanosis and 75 of 1478 (5.1%) controls (RR = 3.3 chi 2 = 11.0, p = 0.001, p corrected = 0.026).

Two cases of granuloma inguinale detected cytologically on routine Papanicolaou-stained cervical smears are presented; the cytologic and histologic features are described in detail, and the electron microscopic appearances are shown. The suitability of the Papanicolaou stain in the detection of granuloma inguinale is discussed, with emphasis on possible differential diagnoses to be considered.
