The HELLP syndrome as part of the microangiopathic syndromes requires special attention in terms of a rapid and accurate diagnostic and differential diagnostic workup because of its possibly rapid clinical deterioration. It is defined by the classical triad of hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelet counts which may lead to prognostically relevant problems in differentiating it from thrombotic-thrombocytopenic purpura and hemolytic-uremic syndrome and other pregnancy-related and unrelated liver diseases, i.e. mainly clinical and laboratory similarities to other liver diseases such as

BACKGROUND: Hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets (HELLP) syndrome is a severe form of pre-eclampsia. Pre-eclampsia is a multi-system disease of pregnancy associated with an increase in blood pressure and increased perinatal and maternal morbidity and mortality. Eighty per cent of women with HELLP syndrome present before term. There are suggestions from observational studies that steroid treatment in HELLP syndrome may improve disordered maternal hematological and biochemical features and perhaps perinatal mortality and morbidity.
OBJECTIVES: To summarise the evidence on the eff

HELLP syndrome is a serious complication of pregnancy with characteristic appearances between 22 to 26 weeks of gestation. Clinical classification in three groups, is based on platelet count. Early diagnosis and appropriate management allow women to achieve a mortality rate below 1%. Neonatal complications are strongly associated with a newborn's immaturity and class of HELLP syndrome. In both presented cases despite identical maternal treatment (steroids because of I st class of HELLP syndrome) neonatal clinical courses were different due to the differences in gestational age. However, approp

A 43-year-old female with HELLP syndrome underwent an emergency caesarean section under general anesthesia. Anesthesia was induced by fentanyl and thiopental with oxygen inhalation. Bolus injection of nicardipine was used to treat hypertensive crisis during operation. Continuous intravenous infusion of prostaglandin E1 was started after delivery to normalize arterial blood pressure. After surgery, both the patient and her baby were discharged uneventfully. It is suggested that a suitable dosage of fentanyl is effective without causing serious side effects for neonate. Prostaglandin E1 may have

The authors reported the outcome of a retrospective study of patients with HELLP syndrome to verify whether this pathology is a clinical entity with models of evolution, regression and well defined treatment. A total of 20 individual cases were reported at the Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the G. Gaslini Institute during the period from January 1990 to September 1995. All cases showed the normalisation of the various clinical and hematochemical parameters within a maximum of 8 days after birth. The rapid diagnosis, the immediate extraction of the fetus and appropriate medical treatm

We report on a case of a 34-year-old I. Grav./I. Para. After a normal pregnancy and Caesarean section, the patient developed a postpartum HELLP-syndrome with an eclamptic attack.

The Hellp's syndrome is a complication of gravidic hypertension which associates the microangiopathic hemolysis, the cytolytic hepatic anomalies and a thrombocytopenia. There are resemblences between the biologic and histologic forms of the thrombotic microangiopathy and Hellp's syndrome. In this publishing, we report one case of Hellp's syndrome which the particular character is that the hepatic and hemolytic biologic anomalies are still very discrete, where as the thrombopenia is deep; this led us to rediscuss about the authencity of Hellp's syndrome. A neurologic complication, particulary g

A case of HELLP (haemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count) and its implications for the country family practitioner- obstetrician is described. The author discusses pre-eclampsia as a multiorgan pathophysiological process, which can present as variants not necessarily in a chronological order of severity. He recommends that it would be reasonable to screen at risk patients with a full blood examination and multiple biochemical analysis from 32 weeks.

AIM: To compare perinatal outcome of patients with HELLP syndrome to that of patients with chronic hypertension and superimposed preeclampsia on chronic hypertension without HELLP syndrome.
METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the perinatal outcome of 147 pregnancies complicated by the HELLP syndrome, chronic hypertension, and superimposed preeclampsia on chronic hypertension without HELLP syndrome.
RESULTS: Gestational age at delivery and birthweights were lower among women with HELLP syndrome than among women with superimposed preeclampsia and chronic hypertension (P < 0.05). There were n

HELLP syndrome is most often diagnosed between 27 and 37 weeks gestation. It is also a diagnosis that can be seen during the postpartum period. The effects of HELLP syndrome on the neonate can be significant. Recognizing the risks to the neonate can assist the clinician in preparing for the neonate prior to delivery. In doing so, the mortality and morbidity rates can be reduced.

HELLP syndrome is a serious obstetrical complication that tends to occur in the second half of pregnancy that complicates six promiles of pregnancies. The term HELLP syndrome is derived from the beginning letters of the English words indicating laboratory changes, which is occurs as a specific illness in pregnancy. There is hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and a decreased platelet count. It can present itself with preeclampsia or without it. The most serious complications are disseminated intravascular coagulation, liver rupture or various organ failures. The pathogenesis at the moment is not

BACKGROUND: Haemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet (HELLP) syndrome is a severe form of preeclampsia. It is often manifested clinically by elevated blood pressure, proteinuria and abdominal pain. Women diagnosed with the HELLP-syndrome normally show evidence of recovery within the first 48 hours after delivery. There is however a small group of patients in which no arrest or reversal of the HELLP process can be seen after 72 hours post partum. These patients have a high incidence of maternal morbidity and mortality. Several studies have shown benefits to HELLP patients after admi

The HELLP syndrome was described by Weinstein as a complication of pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH). There are few clinical reports about HELLP during postpartum period. We present the history of 31 years old pregnant patient, who developed in 36 week of her first pregnancy PIH, pregnancy was terminated in 39 week by cesarean section and postpartum period was complicated with HELLP syndrome (class I). The patient was treated surgically (hysterectomy), than continue at ICU. The treatment was successful without any late organ complications.

UNLABELLED: Preeclampsia/eclampsia has been recognized for centuries and continues to plague both the patient and the obstetrician. A severe variant, the syndrome of hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelets (HELLP), has been recognized for 50 years. Although much new data has been elucidated about the condition, only several observations have withstood the test of time. These are the uniqueness of the disease to humans, the progressive nature of the disease, and the fact that delivery is the sole therapy.
TARGET AUDIENCE: Obstetricians & Gynecologists, Family Physicians.

In this study, clinical features, developing complications, and results of thirty-six patients, which were followed up in our Obstetrics and Gynecology and Nephrology departments between 1997 and 2001, with the diagnosis of HELLP syndrome were searched retrospectively. The mean age of the cases followed up with diagnosis of HELLP syndrome were 30.2 +/- 5.9 (17-46) years. HELLP syndrome was diagnosed on average in the 32.6 +/- 4.8th (23-41) week of gestations. Seventy percent of the cases were with severe preeclampsia and 30% of the cases were with mild preeclampsia. Eleven cases (30%) were nul
