Hair-Growth Potential of Ginseng and Its Major Metabolites: A Review on Its Molecular Mechanisms.

The functional aspect of scalp hair is not only to protect from solar radiation and heat/cold exposure but also to contribute to one's appearance and personality. Progressive hair loss has a cosmetic and social impact. Hair undergoes three stages of hair cycle: the anagen, catagen, and telogen phases. Through cyclical loss and new-hair growth, the number of hairs remains relatively constant. A variety of factors, such as hormones, nutritional status, and exposure to radiations, environmental toxicants, and medications, may affect hair growth. Androgens are the most important of these factors t

Fluorescent polydopamine nanoparticles as a probe for zebrafish sensory hair cells targeted in vivo imaging.

Fluorescent polydopamine nanoparticles (FPNPs) are prepared via the ethylenediamine (EDA)-induced degradation of as-prepared non-fluorescent polydopamine (PDA) and used for targeted bioimaging. The reductive treatment of PDA in the presence of EDA yields fluorescent precipitates, inspiring us to seek various biological approaches to preparing FPNPs with excellent optical and biocompatible properties. Moreover, we firstly found that FPNPs selectively label neuromast hair cells in the lateral line of zebrafish, their applications as a reliable fluorescent indicator to investigate the neuromast h

Diffuse hair loss in an adult female: approach to diagnosis and management.

Telogen effluvium (TE) is the most common cause of diffuse hair loss in adult females. TE, along with female pattern hair loss (FPHL) and chronic telogen effluvium (CTE), accounts for the majority of diffuse alopecia cases. Abrupt, rapid, generalized shedding of normal club hairs, 2-3 months after a triggering event like parturition, high fever, major surgery, etc. indicates TE, while gradual diffuse hair loss with thinning of central scalp/widening of central parting line/frontotemporal recession indicates FPHL. Excessive, alarming diffuse shedding coming from a normal looking head with plent

Bioprinting of hair follicle germs for hair regenerative medicine.

Hair regenerative medicine is a promising approach to treat hair loss. The replication of in vivo tissue configurations and microenvironments, such as hair follicle germs, has been studied to prepare tissue grafts for hair regenerative medicine. However, such approaches should be scalable, because a single patient with alopecia requires thousands of tissue grafts. In this paper, we propose an approach for the scalable and automated preparation of highly hair-inductive tissue grafts using a bioprinter. Two collagen droplets (2 µL each) containing mesenchymal and epithelial cells were placed adj

Psoriatic alopecia.

Alopecia and other hair abnormalities occurring in patients with psoriasis were first recognized over four decades ago, yet psoriatic alopecia is not a well-known concept among clinicians. Alopecia may be directly related to the psoriasis itself, and can affect both the scalp and other parts of the body. On the scalp, psoriatic alopecia most commonly affects lesional skin, but may present as a generalized telogen effluvium. In most cases, there is regrowth of hair, but in rare cases it can cause scarring alopecia. Histological findings include features of psoriasis in the interfollicular epith

Electrokinetic analysis reveals common conditioner ingredient interactions with human hair.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to use electrokinetic analysis to investigate the deposition behaviour and conditioning efficacy of cationic surfactants on human hair, focusing on how surfactant structure, concentration and hair damage influence performance. It also aims to understand the mechanisms governing surfactant adsorption and their impact on hair manageability and health. METHODS: This research employed streaming potential measurements-including pH-dependent, time-dependent and concentration-dependent zeta (ζ)-potential studies-alongside wet combing analyses and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy to e

Contact dermatitis to hair cosmetics: Current diagnostic recommendations.

Hair cosmetics such as shampoos, hair dyes, bleaching agents or hair straightening creams contain frequent contact allergens. These can lead to allergic contact dermatitis especially in hairdressers, but also in their customers and in others who use hair products at home. While hairdressers suffer mainly from hand dermatitis, in customers and home-users, dermatitis primarily affects the head, neck and face. In this mini-review, we propose a diagnostic algorithm in two steps, based on patch testing, that can be used for the assessment of suspected hair product-induced contact dermatitis. In a f

[Phytotherapeutic aspects of diseases of the circulatory system. 8. Chinese magnolia (Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill.): production of the drugs and their evaluation, therapeutic and dietary preparations].

Extracts from the fruits (seeds) of Schisandra chinensis L. and pure isolated substances are one of the components of medicinal preparations designed for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, liver diseases, diseases of the CNS related to the old age, as a supplement in the treatment of neoplasms, diabetes, etc. They are also used for the production of nutraceuticals (soft drinks and health foods), preparations for oral hygiene and for the care for the skin and hair. The review discusses complex analytical methods used for the determination of the content of substances and the phenomena of

Micrograft size and subsequent survival.

BACKGROUND: Micrograft survival rates in hair transplantation have been frequently described in private conversations by hair transplant doctors as variable at best. References in medical literature may grossly underestimate the prevalence and magnitude of poor growth. This is probably because most hair transplant surgeons are concerned that publication of a significant incidence of poor growth would reflect negatively on their practice. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this research was to study micrograft survival rates using microscopic dissection techniques. The author also presents a hypothesi

Cochlear abnormalities in Alport's syndrome.

The cochleae of four patients with a diagnosis or suspicion of Alport's syndrome were examined by microdissection and surface preparations. Strial atrophy, found in all cases, was most pronounced in the middle and apical turns and mainly involved the inferior margin of the stria. Numerous vacuoles were seen in the spiral ligament behind the atrophic stria. The youngest patient, aged 16 years, who had little or no hearing loss, showed limited hair cell degeneration. The other two patients had severe hearing loss and extensive sensory cell loss of unusual distribution. In the specimens from the
