In Haiti in 2017, the prevalence of serum vibriocidal antibody titers against Vibrio cholerae serogroup O1 among adults was 12.4% in Cerca-la-Source and 9.54% in Mirebalais, suggesting a high recent prevalence of infection. Improved surveillance programs to monitor cholera and guide public health interventions in Haiti are necessary.

INTRODUCTION: To our knowledge, there was no record of Vibrio cholerae in Haiti until the 2010 post earthquake outbreak.
METHODOLOGY: This study describes the analysis of 301 stool samples from 117 infants in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, who participated in a pediatric nutrition study between July 2008 and October 2009.
RESULTS: Nine samples were identified positive with both SYBR Green and Taqman-MGB probe based molecular assays targeting V. cholerae hlyA and toxR, respectively (Ct = 33-40), but none were O1 or O139.
CONCLUSIONS: Our results from multiple molecular assays demonstrate the presenc…

Two stories from Haiti are considered from three different perspectives. The first story is about a boy named Joseph Alvyns, whose mother died from cholera in 2011. His story is told in a short film titled Baseball in the time of Cholera. The second story is about Mme. Yolande Marie Nazaire, who was the Director of the Haiti National School of Nursing in Port-au-Prince on the morning of January 12, 2010, when an earthquake killed 90 students and faculty. The three perspectives discussed here are: (a) Critical Reflective in health professional education as used by the University of California a…

Tungiasis is a disease endemic to poor communities in Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa. It is caused by the female flea, Tunga penetrans, which burrows into the skin of its host to feed while producing and extruding eggs. Consequent lesions may be painful and even crippling with damage ranging from mild erythema and swelling to necrosis. Superinfection of lesions can be serious and may result in auto-amputation or death from tetanus. We describe an outbreak of tungiasis in rural Haiti and a community-based intervention used to address it. Of 177 patients assessed, 132 (47 female, 85 mal…

Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death among rural Haitian adults, and TB control in Haiti is widely acknowledged to be a failure. The causes of both the endemicity of TB and the failure of attempts to address it are briefly reviewed before data from a study conducted in rural, central Haiti are presented. Members of one group of patients with active TB were given free medical care; members of a second group were given free care as well as financial aid, incentives to attend a monthly clinic, and aggressive home follow-up by trained village health workers. Comparing the two groups sho…

This qualitative study documented the effects of uterine fibroids on the suffering of women in Haiti. It makes a unique contribution by re-socializing this disease, by making visible the social inequalities and what is at stake for the women, for their families, and for healthcare delivery. Uterine fibroid is a benign tumor of the uterus, common in gynecology, but profoundly malignant in how it affects women's lives. Little has been reported on their lived experiences. Haiti has historical, social, and economic factors that hinder the search for treatment. The study explores how and why patien…

The 2010 cholera epidemic in Haiti was one of the largest cholera epidemics ever recorded. To estimate the magnitude of the death toll during the first wave of the epidemic, we retrospectively conducted surveys at 4 sites in the northern part of Haiti. Overall, 70,903 participants were included; at all sites, the crude mortality rates (19.1-35.4 deaths/1,000 person-years) were higher than the expected baseline mortality rate for Haiti (9 deaths/1,000 person-years). This finding represents an excess of 3,406 deaths (2.9-fold increase) for the 4.4% of the Haiti population covered by these survey…

An epidemiologic (cross-sectional study) survey on 462 inhabitants in Corail, Haiti showed that 16.5% were infected with Mansonella ozzardi. This finding was determined from a single 20-μL sample of finger prick blood from each person. Among children, < 2% had a detectable microfilaremia. In persons > 15 years of age, the prevalence of infection for males and females was 23% and 21%, respectively. In general, the microfilaremias were low and 70% of positive persons had < 10 microfilariae per 20 μL of blood; only 5% had > 50 microfilariae. This study shows that persons living near mangrove mars…
