Assessment and management of halitosis.

Halitosis is an unpleasant condition that may be the origin of concern not only for a possible health condition but also for frequent psychological alterations which may lead to social and personal isolation. The most frequent sources of halitosis that exist in the oral cavity include bacterial reservoirs such as the dorsum of the tongue, saliva and periodontal pockets. Volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs) are the prominent elements of oral malodour. Genuine halitosis and pseudo-halitosis should be in the treatment realm of dental practitioners. Clinical Relevance: Halitosis can be a symptom of u…

Emotional impact of halitosis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the emotional impact of halitosis on 18-year-old men using a self-reported questionnaire. METHOD: A total of 2,224 participants underwent dental and medical examinations in the army medical services in the city of Pelotas, southern Brazil, in July 2008. RESULTS: In this sample, 12% of respondents expressed concern about their oral malodor, which had a strong emotional impact on their quality of life. [Halitosis in oral diseases].

The presence of hydrogen sulfide, methilmercaptane, dimethilsulfide, putrescine, cadaverine in exhaled air was evaluated in the study. The concentrations of the named substances were defined in various oral diseases. The received results are of interest for differential diagnostics of halitosis causes.

Halitosis: the multidisciplinary approach.

Halitosis, bad breath or oral malodour are all synonyms for the same pathology. Halitosis has a large social and economic impact. For the majority of patients suffering from bad breath, it causes embarrassment and affects their social communication and life. Moreover, halitosis can be indicative of underlying diseases. Only a limited number of scientific publications were presented in this field until 1995. Ever since, a large amount of research is published, often with lack of evidence. In general, intraoral conditions, like insufficient dental hygiene, periodontitis or tongue coating are cons…

[Psychosocial aspects of halitosis].

Using a representative sample from the Dutch population, some psychosocial aspects of halitosis were examined. The results of the survey showed that almost 90% of the Dutch population aged 16 years and older were regularly faced with halitosis. Forty percent reported to be exposed to someone with halitosis at least once a week, men significantly more frequently than women. Although less strongly than body odour, halitosis was reported as being one of the most severe 'let-downs' in social interactions. The greater the social distance between subjects, the less likely is the chance that a person…

[Halitosis. A common problem].

Halitosis is a frequently occurring problem, the cause of which is generally to be found in the mouth. The challenge for oral health care providers is to diagnose it correctly and treat it effectively. Differential diagnosis is of great importance in making a distinction between halitosis which originates in the mouth and which does not originate in the mouth. Oral halitosis can be treated effectively by good oral health care. Plaque accumulation on the tongue is the most common cause of oral halitosis. Tongue cleansing, possibly in combination with a specific mouth wash, is consequently recom…

The gastrointestinal aspects of halitosis.

BACKGROUND: Halitosis is a common human condition for which the exact pathophysiological mechanism is unclear. It has been attributed mainly to oral pathologies. Halitosis resulting from gastrointestinal disorders is considered to be extremely rare. However, halitosis has often been reported among the symptoms related to Helicobacter pylori infection and gastroesophageal reflux disease. OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively review the experience with children and young adults presenting with halitosis to a pediatric gastroenterology clinic. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients diagnosed…

Tonsillectomy for the treatment of halitosis.

BACKGROUND: Halitosis, or oral malodor, is a term used to describe noticeably unpleasant odors exhaled in breathing whether the smell is from an oral source or not. Oral causes have been proposed to be responsible for the majority of halitosis complaints. The study aims to investigate the tonsils as an origin of halitosis and to assess the efficacy of tonsillectomy for the treatment of oral bad breath caused by chronic tonsillitis. METHODS: After excluding dental, periodontal, sinonasal, oral, pulmonary, and gastroenterological diseases as the origin of halitosis, forty-four patients with hal…

Mouthrinses for the treatment of halitosis.

BACKGROUND: Halitosis is an unpleasant odour emanating from the oral cavity. Mouthwashes, which are commonly used for dealing with oral malodour, can be generally divided into those that neutralize and those that mask the odour. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of mouthrinses in controlling halitosis. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the following databases: Cochrane Oral Health Group Trials Register (to August 2008); the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (The Cochrane Library 2008, Issue 3); MEDLINE (1950 to August 2008); EMBASE (1980 to August 2008); and CINAHL (1982 to Augu…

Halitosis in medicine: a review.

This review deals with the different forms of halitosis. Halitosis can be subdivided according to its original location. At present, halitosis of oral origin is quite well understood and some excellent reviews have already appeared in the literature. Special attention is given here to extra-oral halitosis. Extra-oral halitosis can be subdivided into: halitosis from the upper respiratory tract including the nose; halitosis from the lower respiratory tract; blood-borne halitosis. In blood-borne halitosis, malodourant compounds in the bloodstream are carried to the lungs where they volatilise and…

Extraoral etiology of halitosis.

Halitosis is a frequent complaint which is estimated to be found in around 50 to 60% of the general population and that carries serious personal and social repercussions. Although the majority of cases are due to oral problems, it is considered that 10-13% of halitosis cases are of extraoral etiology. In these cases the responsibility of the general dental practitioner, who is frequently the first person to examine and treat these patients, is to refer the patient for evaluation to an otorhinolaryngologist in order to rule out the presence of chronic tonsillitis or chronic sinusitis. If the ot…

[Halitosis: a multidisciplinary problem].

Bad breath, or halitosis, affects between 50 and 65% of the population. Despite its frequency, this problem is often unaccepted and declared taboo. In about 8% of the cases, bad breath is related to an ENT pathology (sinusitis, tonsillitis, ...). More rarely it is caused by a metabolic (diabetes, trimethylaminuremia, ...) or gastric dysfunction. Ninety percent of the cases however, are associated to an oral disease: either gingivitis due to an inadequate removal of dental plaque, especially from interdental spaces, or periodontitis (alveolar bone destruction), or bacterial accumulation on the …

Halitosis: an interdisciplinary approach.

PURPOSE: To summarize the experience in our halitosis clinic, emphasizing an interdisciplinary approach. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-nine patients with a primary complaint of halitosis were evaluated. Their health was established by a questionnaire, by clinical examination, and by laboratory analysis. Halitosis was evaluated organoleptically by a dentist and an otolaryngologist (odds ratio [OR] = 5.7). The volatile sulfide levels were measured with a portable sulfide monitor (Halimeter; RH-17 series, Interscan, Chatsworth, CA). RESULTS: The patients were found to suffer from otolaryngologic…

[Diagnosis and treatment of halitosis].

Halitosis or foetor ex ore is a frequent and complex problem with a multifactorial etiology. Nevertheless, in the majority of cases local oral conditions are the causes of the bad breath and therefore an extensive oral examination is the first step towards the identification of the source of malodor. A correct diagnosis will depend on analysis of data gathered from the patient's halitosis history, oral examination and additional laboratory and diagnostic tests.
