[Bone quality evaluation in allograft hand transplant].

Five bilateral forearms allograft have been performed between January 2000 and July 2009 in Lyon (France). The first four patients (three males, one female) have been the subject of an assessment of the bone quality of those allografts. The techniques selected for this study were: radioclinical analysis, bone scintigraphy, MRI, bone densitometry and High Resolution peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography (HR-PQCT). Histology has been performed only on the first patient unilaterally grafted in 1998 who did not take part in this clinical research protocol, after amputation of his rejected gr

Bone compression technique for arthrodesis and nonunion in the hand.

We present a simple compression technique for treatment of difficult nonunions and joint fusions in the hand. This technique utilizes only K-wires and small vessel loops. The results of 44 consecutive cases were studied retrospectively. Union was achieved in 37/44 cases. The average time to union was 7 weeks and our results were comparable to those of other studies. We found this technique useful, especially in complicated cases.

Chondrosarcoma of the short tubular bones of the hands and feet.

OBJECTIVE: To report 12 cases of chondrosarcoma in a rare location, the short tubular bones of the hands and feet, as well as 12 cases of enchondroma in similar locations, emphasizing the radiologic and histopathologic features. DESIGN AND PATIENTS: All relevant cases that had both histologic slides and radiographs available were taken from the files of one orthopedic referral hospital and the personal files of one of the authors. A similar number of enchondroma cases was selected at random from the files. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: One malignancy arose in a background of enchondromatosis, wit

Bone Health, Fragility Fractures, and the Hand Surgeon.

Fragility fractures, which are often linked to osteoporosis, are fractures resulting from minimal trauma or low-impact falls. Although osteoporosis treatment can reduce risk of fragility fractures, many patients do not meet diagnostic criteria for osteoporosis before their first fracture. Additionally, fragility fractures are often overlooked as signs of underlying bone health issues, leading to untreated patients despite the availability of effective therapies. Appropriate bone health care can considerably reduce the risk of fragility fractures and prevent subsequent fractures in individuals

Vascularized bone flaps from the hand and wrist.

Vascularized bone flaps from the hand and wrist are an alternative to free bone transfer. Their obvious advantages recommend them for routine use. Indications and techniques should be known by hand surgeons.

Aneurysmal Bone Cysts of the Hand, Wrist, and Forearm.

PURPOSE: To determine the outcomes of surgical management of aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) in the hand, wrist, and forearm. METHODS: The medical records of 11 patients undergoing surgical treatment of ABCs distal to the elbow from 1994 to 2011 with at least 12 months follow-up were reviewed retrospectively. Mean follow-up was 29 months (range, 13-56 months). There were 7 males and 4 females. Four lesions presented in the radius, 3 in the ulna, 2 in the metacarpals, and 2 in the phalanges. RESULTS: Ten patients underwent wide unroofing and intralesional curettage with 9 undergoing associated h

Hand infections secondary to fish bone injuries.

Hand injuries associated with fish bones and fin spines are not common but can cause morbidity out of proportion to the original injury. This is because such injuries often leave residual fragments of foreign organic matter in the tissues, leading to troublesome secondary infections. This report details 1 year's experience with nine hand infections after fish bone injury in a busy regional hand surgery referral centre. There were five males and four females with an average age of 45 years. Radiographs taken on presentation in five patients revealed a radiolucent foreign body in only two patien

The sesamoid bones of the hands and feet: participators in arthritis.

The sesamoids generally appear as small ovoid bones adjacent to articulations or at sites where tendons are angled about osseous surfaces. At either location they participate in joint afflictions, the pattern of abnormality being remarkably constant and predictable. Sesamoids may demonstrate osseous erosion in rheumatoid arthritis, bony proliferation or "whiskering" in rheumatoid variants, joint space narrowing and bony ankylosis in septic arthritis, and eburnation and osteophyte formation in osteoarthritis and diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis. These changes become particularly importa
