Tooth chipping patterns and dental caries suggest a soft fruit diet in early anthropoids.

OBJECTIVES: Fossils from the Fayum Depression, Egypt, are crucial for understanding anthropoid evolution due to the abundance of taxa and the time interval they represent (late Eocene to early Oligocene). Dietary and foraging behavioral interpretations suggest fruits were their dominant food source, although hard foods (e.g., seeds and nuts) and leaves could have been important dietary components for particular groups. In this study, we compare dental chipping patterns in five Fayum primate genera with chipping data for extant primates, to assess potential hard object feeding in early anthropo

Hierarchical fluctuation shapes a dynamic flow linked to states of consciousness.

Consciousness arises from the spatiotemporal neural dynamics, however, its relationship with neural flexibility and regional specialization remains elusive. We identified a consciousness-related signature marked by shifting spontaneous fluctuations along a unimodal-transmodal cortical axis. This simple signature is sensitive to altered states of consciousness in single individuals, exhibiting abnormal elevation under psychedelics and in psychosis. The hierarchical dynamic reflects brain state changes in global integration and connectome diversity under task-free conditions. Quasi-periodic patt

Polyarteritis nodosa in a captive common wooly monkey (Lagothrix lagotricha) associated with intestinal necrosis, peritonitis, and sepsis.

Polyarteritis nodosa is an idiopathic necrotizing vasculitis that affects small to medium-sized arteries. We describe a case of polyarteritis nodosa in a captive common wooly monkey (Lagothrix lagotricha) associated with transmural intestinal necrosis and secondary peritonitis. This condition must be considered for differential diagnosis of segmental arteritis in neotropical primates.

Masticatory Loading and Ossification of the Mandibular Symphysis during Anthropoid Origins.

An ossified or 'fused' mandibular symphysis characterizes the origins of the Anthropoidea, a primate suborder that includes humans. Longstanding debate about the adaptive significance of variation in this jaw joint centers on whether a bony symphysis is stronger than an unfused one spanned by cartilage and ligaments. To provide essential information regarding mechanical performance, intact adult symphyses from representative primates and scandentians were loaded ex vivo to simulate stresses during biting and chewing - dorsoventral (DV) shear and lateral transverse bending ('wishboning'). The a

Biodistribution and biocompatibility of DMSA-stabilized maghemite magnetic nanoparticles in nonhuman primates (Cebus spp.).

AIM: This work represents the first reported investigation on the effects of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in nonhuman primates. Biodistribution, biocompatibility and nanotoxicity of maghemite nanoparticles stabilized with dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) were accessed. MATERIALS & METHODS: A control animal was used and three other animals were intravenously injected with DMSA-MNPs and euthanized 12 h, 30 and 90 days following administration. Extracted organs were processed by histological techniques. An additional animal was used to collect blood samples to complementarily assess biocompatibil

The phylogenetic history of immunodeficiency viruses.

Knowledge of the phylogenetic history of the human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV-1 and HIV-2) is important for our understanding of the epidemiology of AIDS, the disease caused by these viruses. Reconstruction of the evolutionary tree is hampered, however, by two problems. One is the high variation in nucleotide sequence between the known HIV isolates which can create formidable difficulties in identifying homologous genomic sites that may be used in a molecular phylogenetic reconstruction. Another impediment has been the lack of unequivocal time calibration points: there is only a sparse 'fos

Oesophagojejunal anastomosis after total gastrectomy.

Techniques of oesophagojejunal anastomosis were studied in chacma baboons (Papio ursinus ursinus). End-to-end anastomosis utilizing a Roux-en-Y loop and interrupted silk sutures gave the best results. End-to-end anastomosis performed in 3 animals resulted in jejunal volvulus.

Erythrocyte entry by malarial parasites. A moving junction between erythrocyte and parasite.

Invasion of erythrocytes by merozoites of the monkey malaria, Plasmodium knowlesi, was investigated by electron microscopy. The apical end of the merozoite makes initial contact with the erythrocyte, creating a small depression in the erythrocyte membrane. The area of the erythrocyte membrane to which the merozoite is attached becomes thickened and forms a junction with the plasma membrane of the merozoite. As the merozoite enters the invagination in the erythrocyte surface, the junction, which is in the form of a circumferential zone of attachment between the erythrocyte and merozoite, moves
