Effect of Structure and Wearing Modes on the Protective Performance of Industrial Safety Helmet.

This study aims to explore the effects of helmet structure designs and wearing modes on the protective performance of safety helmets under the impact of falling objects. Four helmet types (no helmet, V-shaped, dome-shaped, and motorcycle helmets) and five wearing modes (left and right tilt by 5 deg, backward tilt by 15 deg, 0 deg without chin strap, 0 deg with chin strap) were included in this study. The axial impact of a concrete block under various impact velocities was simulated. The results indicate that the energy absorption and shock mitigation effects of the foam cushion are superior to

Injury Patterns of Electric-Scooter Related Trauma: A Systematic Review With Proportion Meta-Analysis.

Electric scooter (ES)-related injuries are increasing but poorly described. Clinicians need more information to be prepared for these patients. We supposed two prevalent patterns of patients: mildly injured (predominant upper-limb injuries) and severely injured (predominant head trauma). This study aims to understand the frequency of ES-related injuries and patients' characteristics despite the heterogeneity of data currently available. A systematic review with a proportion meta-analysis was conducted on studies with a multidisciplinary description of ES-related injuries in adult patients (PRO

Open versus endoscopic surgery with helmet molding therapy in non-syndromic patients with craniosynostosis: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical outcomes and treatment-related costs.

OBJECTIVE: There is an ongoing debate regarding the optimal treatment for craniosynostosis as diverse factors influence the election between endoscopic and open surgery. Previous evidence favors endoscopic procedures. However, evidence remains unfulfilled by a limited number of patients and clustered in very few centers worldwide making it difficult to define it as a replicable technique in different populations. In recent years, evidence regarding endoscopic-assisted procedures has gone through a considerable spurt showing an increased interest among surgeons globally showing optimal outcomes

"A National Review of Crowdfunding for Plagiocephaly Helmets".

ObjectiveCustom prescription helmets for plagiocephaly may be a significant financial burden for families, especially when not covered by insurance. This study aims to identify factors that influence the success of crowdsourcing campaigns for this therapy.DesignGoFundMe campaigns were collected by searching terms such as "plagiocephaly" and "baby helmet." Two reviewers analyzed each campaign for variables, including demographic data, story elements, and photo characteristics. Univariate logistic regression was used to determine each variable's impact on success, defined as attaining ≥75% of a

Association Between Head Impact Biomechanics and Physical Load in College Football.

Head impacts and physical exertion are ubiquitous in American football, but the relationship between these factors is poorly understood across a competitive season or even within an individual session. Gameplay characteristics, including player position and session type, may contribute to these relationships but have not been prospectively examined. The current study aimed to determine if an association exists between head impact biomechanics and physical load metrics. We prospectively studied college football players during the 2017-2021 football seasons across representative playing position

Partnering with High-Risk Communities to Successfully Reduce Pediatric Injury Over Time.

PURPOSE: Injury is the leading cause of childhood morbidity and mortality. Injury prevention (IP) initiatives are often created in isolation from the communities most affected. We hypothesized that the use of a comprehensive approach to injury prevention through community partnerships will result in a measurable reduction in pediatric injuries. METHODS: The IP program at our free-standing level 1 pediatric trauma center developed partnerships within eight targeted high-risk communities. IP coordinators and community partners implemented programs driven by community-specific injury data and co

Spiked Helmet Electrocardiographic Sign-A Systematic Review of Case Reports.

First reported in 2011, the spiked helmet sign (SHS) is an electrocardiographic pattern of ST-segment elevation anecdotally associated with poor prognosis. This study aims to systematically evaluate the electrocardiographic characteristics, clinical presentations, and outcomes of all cases of SHS reported in the literature. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and EMBASE were searched electronically from their inception until November 2022. The Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Case Reports was used to critically appraise included studies. Studies written in English describin

Web content mining analysis of e-scooter crash causes and implications in Germany.

In Germany, police reports published via press are neither uniformly written nor accessible to the public. There is a lack of comprehensive and factual data-based analyses of e-scooter crashes and their causes. We collected 1936 crash-related reports over two years via the German press portal based on a systematic web content mining process. Sentiment analysis results revealed that the police reports' coverage is predominantly factual and neutral and, therefore, useful for keyword-based analyses. After identifying the 46 most relevant keywords in the reports, we generated an adjacency matrix t

Comparing the risky behaviours of shared and private e-scooter and bicycle riders in downtown Brisbane, Australia.

Electric scooter (e-scooter) use has increased internationally, with concerns about injuries to riders and pedestrians, and reports of non-use of helmets, excessive speed, drink-riding and underage riding. E-scooter regulations vary widely among jurisdictions, with likely effects on the extent and nature of safety issues. This study was conducted in downtown Brisbane, Australia, where e-scooters must be ridden on the footpath, bicycles are allowed on the road and the footpath, and helmet use is mandatory for bicycle and e-scooter riders of all ages. It examined involvement in illegal and risky

Injury patterns and circumstances associated with electric scooter collisions: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Electric scooters are personal mobility devices that have risen in popularity worldwide since 2017. Emerging reports suggest that both riders and other road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, have been injured in electric scooter-associated incidents. We undertook a scoping review of the current literature to evaluate the injury patterns and circumstances of electric scooter-associated injuries. METHODS: A scoping review of literature published from 2010 to 2020 was undertaken following accepted guidelines. Relevant articles were identified in Medline, Embase, SafetyLit and

Bicycle helmets are protective against facial injuries, including facial fractures: a meta-analysis.

Cycling is a popular activity. However there are risks associated with cycling, including facial injury. Helmets are often worn to prevent head injury. Evidence for their protection against facial injury is limited. This meta-analysis investigated the effect of bicycle helmets on the incidence of facial injury. The PubMed/MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library databases were searched. Studies included were observational and involved adult participants. Paediatric studies, studies on helmet legislation, and those combining facial injuries with other injury types were excluded. The studie

Bicycle injuries and helmet use: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The research literature was systematically reviewed and results were summarized from studies assessing bicycle helmet effectiveness to mitigate head, serious head, face, neck and fatal head injury in a crash or fall. METHODS: Four electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, COMPENDEX and SCOPUS) were searched for relevant, peer-reviewed articles in English. Included studies reported medically diagnosed head, face and neck injuries where helmet use was known. Non-approved helmets were excluded where possible. Summary odds ratios (OR) were obtained using multivariate meta-regression mode

Impact energy attenuation performance of football headgear.

OBJECTIVES: Commercially available football head protectors were tested to determine their impact energy attenuation performance and ability to reduce the likelihood of concussion. METHODS: Prospective study using standardised impact test methods with both rigid (magnesium) and Hybrid III headforms. RESULTS: Eight commercially available head protectors from six manufacturers were tested. The magnitude of the headform accelerations increased as the drop height was increased, ranging from a minimum of 64 g from a height of 0.2 m to a maximum of 1,132 g from a height of 0.6 m. The head injury c

Variation of bicycle helmet use rates with route distance.

The relationship between bicycle helmet use and demographic measures has been studied extensively. To date, however, there have been very few studies of helmet use by amateur cyclists in organized, noncompetitive, long distance events. Seven hundred eleven riders were observed during three organized events offering route distances ranging from 16 to 161 kilometres. Helmet use ranged from 59% in the shorter distance groups to one hundred percent in the longest distance group. This information can assist organizers of bicycling events by permitting estimation of helmet use rates for planned rout

The human cost of allowing unhelmeted motorcycling in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: This study's objective was to estimate the number of motorcyclist fatalities attributable to laws that allow unhelmeted riding in the United States since 1976. METHOD: Counts of helmeted and unhelmeted motorcyclist fatalities were used to estimate population-level helmet use under all-rider helmet laws and in the absence of such laws. The number of lives that could have been saved if helmet use in states that allowed unhelmeted riding was equal to helmet use in states with all-rider helmet laws was estimated for each year and summed over the study years. RESULTS: If all states

The prevalence of helmet use in motorcyclists around the world: a systematic review and meta-analysis of 5,006,476 participants.

Road traffic injuries present a significant public health burden, especially in developing countries. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesized global evidence on motorcycle helmet use prevalence by including 299 records across 249 articles involving 5,006,476 participants from 1982 to 2022. The findings revealed a declining trend in helmet use prevalence over the past four decades, with an overall prevalence of 48.71%. The meta-regression analysis did not find any statistically significant change in the overall prevalence. Subgroup analysis showed higher helmet use prevalence in ob
