[Beryllium--underestimated occupational health hazard in Poland].

Beryllium is a metal used in different branches of industry. Inhalation is the most common way of exposure. Beryllium shows a high affinity to the lung tissue. It may act as toxic, carcinogenic and immunological agent. Chronic beryllium disease (CDB) is very difficult to diagnose because of its similarity to sarcoidosis. The lymphocyte proliferation assay is a very helpful test in CBD diagnosis. It seems reasonable to include this test into the body of the standard diagnostic procedures in workers exposed to beryllium. Early detection of hypersensitivity to beryllium, before CBD symptoms occur

[Annual activities of a regional occupational health service].

The scope and content of the services provided by a regional, occupational health service are described in quantitative terms. Many of its activities are in compliance with state regulations. In this respect this service differs greatly from other, regular, clinical services. About 22,000 examinations are performed annually, and there are about 140,000 employed persons in the region, so that about 1 in 5 workers is examined by the service annually. The 3 main activities of the clinic are pre-employment examinations, periodic surveillance of certain groups of workers and evaluating work capacit

Women's mental health: implications for occupational therapy.

This article describes issues of sexism in the mental health profession. Theoretical bias in psychiatry and the sociopolitical status of women are both linked to the inappropriate mental health treatment of women. A relational model of women's psychological development is offered as an alternative theoretical perspective for understanding the mental health needs of women. Ways to integrate this perspective in occupational therapy practice are included.

[Health effects of non-occupational exposure to asbestos].

Mesothelioma has occurred in a relative large number not only among miners but also among non-occupationally exposed persons living in the northwestern region of Cape State of South Africa, where crocidolite is mined and transported. The long-term residents of Thetford Mines in Quebec Province, Canada, who have never engaged in mining and milling of chrysolite have not shown an excess mortality of respiratory diseases. Tremolite in soil is responsible for mesothelioma among residents of certain geologic regions such as Cyprus, Corcica, northwestern Greece and Turkey. An increased prevalence of

Aspects of occupational health in the sugar cane industry.

Workers in developing countries face as many, if not more, work-related health problems as their counterparts in industrialized nations. This paper concentrates on occupational health problems in the sugar industry, which exists in 40 countries, mostly in the Third World. Sugar cane workers have a high level of occupational accidents and are exposed to the high toxicity of pesticides. They may also have an increased risk of lung cancer, possibly mesothelioma. This may be related to the practice of burning foliage at the time of cane-cutting. Bagassosis is also a problem specific to the industr

Current concepts in occupational health: metals-chromium.

Chromium and its compounds have long been generally recognized as having potentially severe occupational health hazards. A brief review of the historical perspectives is provided. Failure to properly differentiate between the various valence states, which exhibit different toxicological properties and the physical state (solubility, particle size, etc.) as well as poor quantitation and characterization of exposure has led to confusion and potential error in estimating the risk inherent in working with chromium and its compounds. An overview is provided of the most recent and available data whi

Occupational hazards to reproduction and health in anaesthetists and paediatricians.

A mail questionnaire was sent to Finnish anaesthetists and paediatricians to evaluate the risks of reproductive, teratogenic and health complications related to the professions. The incidence of diagnosed spontaneous miscarriages in anaesthetists' families was 10.2% of all pregnancies and it was 13.2% in paediatricians' families. Smoking seemed to increase markedly the incidence of spontaneous miscarriages, which was 22.9% in smoking female anaesthetists and 17.2% in smoking female paediatricians. The gestation times in cases of both full-term pregnancies and miscarriages were shorter in the a

Towards occupational health and safety in sex work.

Sex workers remain overwhelmingly excluded from occupational health and safety (OHS) protections due to continued criminalisation and stigmatisation of sex work. In this Series paper, we examine evidence on sex workers' OHS using an adapted OHS framework. Our findings show how criminalisation undermines comprehensive OHS practices across legislative contexts, but despite criminalisation, sex workers adopt innovative, community-driven strategies to safeguard OHS and place a strong emphasis on community mobilisation and mutual aid. Decriminalisation markedly improves working conditions and facil

Occupational eyelid dermatitis: A public health perspective.

Occupational eyelid dermatitis (ED) is a much-neglected issue in public health, with important ramifications for patients' quality of life, employment and facial aesthetics. Patients with occupational ED are often younger, male and with an atopic background compared with those with non-occupational ED. Common contact allergens include rubber additives, acrylates, isothiazolinones, fragrances, epoxy resins, potassium dichromate, colophonium, metals and topical medications. Contact allergens and irritants may cause occupational ED by direct or indirect exposure, for example, through transfer by

Occupational violence in health care: A systematic review.

In recent years, healthcare environments have witnessed an increase in incidents of violence, often attributed to dissatisfaction with the quality of services provided or with the manner in which care is delivered during healthcare assistance. In the quest to find a theoretical basis for this observation, a systematic review was conducted over the past 5 years, and the literature indicates that this phenomenon is particularly pronounced in the aggression directed towards nurses and physicians. Regardless of geographical location, there is a higher prevalence of violent incidents in environment

Quality of spirometry tests in the field of occupational health.

BACKGROUND: The spirometry test is a valuable test to evaluate the performance of the respiratory system. The interpretation of the results is highly dependent on the quality of its performance, while the inappropriate quality results in unwanted consequences for individuals and the healthcare system. This study investigated the quality of spirometry tests performed in occupational health. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, the quality of 776 spirometry tests in different occupational centers by the specialists in Rasht, Iran, in 2020, based on the guidelines of the American Thoracic Soc

Blast Overpressures as a Military and Occupational Health Concern.

PURPOSE: This tutorial reviews effects of environmental stressors like blast overpressures and other well-known acoustic contaminants (continuous, intermittent, and impulsive noise) on hearing, tinnitus, vestibular, and balance-related functions. Based on the overall outcome of these effects, detailed consideration is given to the health and well-being of individuals. METHOD: Because hearing loss and tinnitus are consequential in affecting quality of life, novel neuromodulation paradigms are reviewed for their positive abatement and treatment-related effects. Examples of clinical data, resear

The Opioid Epidemic and the Role of the Occupational Health Nurse.

The opioid epidemic is a national public health crisis. It began with the misuse of commonly used prescription opioid pain relievers and has led to the increased use of heroin and illicit fentanyl. Large-scale initiatives have begun on the federal and state level and place an emphasis on improved opioid prescribing, which have important implications for the workplace. Treatment of work injury may initiate the use of prescription opioids and result in misuse and possible overdose. Prescription drug abuse affects all aspects of society so potentially any workplace could be affected. A multifacet

[Role of occupational physician for workers' mental health].

In this paper, I briefly review the history of occupational mental health as well as administrative trends in Japan, and summarized how occupational physicians should get involved in these activities. As for mental health in the workplace, occupational physicians are required to participate in a large number of wide-ranging activities, including the management of mental illness. On the other hand, approving the occupational physician who is in charge of mental health affairs only has some important ramifications which cannot be disregarded. Careful consideration should be given to this matter.

Post-occupational health surveillance of asbestos workers.

BACKGROUND: Italian law requires an extensive health surveillance of workers after cessation of their employment status in the case of occupational exposure to carcinogens, including asbestos. Nonetheless, Italian law does not specify the timeframe of these clinical checks, nor who has financial and organizational responsibility for this surveillance. A literature search confirmed a lack of consensus around the objectives and methods to follow up workers with past occupational exposure to asbestos. OBJECTIVES: To develop an updated evidence-based methodology for an appropriate health surveill

[Occupational risks and health disorders in transport drivers].

This paper presents a review of occupational risks and health disorders in professional drivers employed in public and private transport. Epidemiological studies suggest an excess risk for cardiovascular diseases and musculoskeletal disorders in several categories of professional drivers, such as bus drivers, taxi drivers, truck drivers and forklift truck drivers. Although cardiovascular and musculoskeletal disorders are of multifactorial origin, some characteristics of occupational exposure in transport drivers (stress, workshift, traffic pollutants, awkward postures, exposure to noise and wh

Occupational safety and health in India: now and the future.

India, a growing economy and world's largest democracy, has population exceeding 1.2 billion. Out of this huge number, 63.6% form working age group. More than 90% work in the informal economy, mainly agriculture and services. Less than 10% work in the organized sector; mainly industry, mining and some services. New service industries like Information Technology (IT), Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) are increasing rapidly; so is the proportion of females in the workforce. The occupational safety and health (OSH) scenario in India is complex. Unprecedented growth and progress go hand in hand
