BACKGROUND: Family caregivers of adults with Down syndrome often provide life-long caregiving support for their loved one. Long-term caregiving can impact caregivers' health and well-being, yet their experiences and support needs are underexplored.
METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with caregivers of adults with Down syndrome to understand their caregiving experiences and perceived caregiver support needs. Transcripts of the recorded interviews were coded and analysed thematically.
RESULTS: Seventeen family caregivers (94.1% female, Mage = 58.8 years) of adults with Down synd

The fall of state socialism in Poland in 1989 constituted a critical moment which redefined policies on reproductive health care and access to family planning, influenced by the renewed power of the Catholic church. Poland also embarked on neoliberal economic reforms that resulted in major cutbacks in social services and state health care coverage. The confluence of the elimination of contraceptive subsidies, privatisation of health care, and the intensification of bribes to underpaid health care providers created new challenges for women in accessing services. Furthermore, the 1993 ban on abo

A major goal of federal, state, and local health agencies is to reduce the burden of disease in populations. To obtain sufficient resources to achieve this goal, they must document the importance of the health problems addressed and the impact and efficiency of programs. CDC supports core activities within state and local health departments to promote health and prevent disease. This presentation will focus on the need for evidence to document the effectiveness of these activities that include routine monitoring of oral health, risk behaviors, and other factors; implementing effective populati

This study investigates the links between community readiness and the social networks among participants in Communities That Care (CTC), community-based prevention coalitions. The coalitions targeted adolescent behavior problems through community risk factor assessments, prioritization of risk factors, and selection/implementation of corresponding evidence-based family, school, and community programs. Key leaders (n = 219) in 23 new CTC sites completed questionnaires focusing on community readiness to implement CTC and the respondents' personal, work, and social organization links to other key

OBJECTIVE: To synthesise the existing literature on care transition planning from the perspectives of older adults, caregivers and health professionals and to identify the factors that may influence these stakeholders' transition decision-making processes.
DESIGN: A scoping review guided by Arksey and O'Malley's six-step framework. A comprehensive search strategy was conducted on 7 January 2021 to identify articles in five databases (MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL Plus, PsycINFO and AgeLine). Records were included when they described care transition planning in an institutional setting from the pers

Crisis plans are widely used in mental health nursing to support service user participation, recovery-oriented care, risk management, and continuity of care. However, they do not always function as intended during severe distress. Service users may avoid, ignore, or feel burdened by plans created collaboratively during more stable periods. This theoretical paper reconsiders such nonuse not simply as non-adherence or implementation failure, but as potentially reflecting relational and temporal tensions within crisis planning. Drawing on literature on crisis planning and recovery-oriented care,

INTRODUCTION: Doula support is increasingly recognized as a promising strategy to address racial inequities in maternal health. The New York City Health Department launched the Citywide Doula Initiative (CDI) in March 2022 to expand access to free, community-based doula support in disinvested neighborhoods.
METHODS: To evaluate the program's first year of implementation, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 44 clients, doulas, doula-organization staff, and Health Department staff between November 2022 and April 2023. We coded interview notes using template analysis (a thematic analysi

The recent classification of mental health establishments under the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, is based largely on institutional affiliation. This viewpoint proposes a care-level-based classification comprising acute, intermediate, and rehabilitation services. Such an approach may better reflect clinical needs, support service planning, and align with the objectives of the Mental Health Care Act.

UNLABELLED: Upstream interventions - e.g. housing programs and community health worker interventions- address socioeconomic and behavioral factors that influence health outcomes across diseases. Studying these types of interventions in clinical trials raises a methodological challenge: how should researchers measure the effect of an upstream intervention in a sample of patients with different diseases? This paper addresses this question using an illustrative protocol of a randomized controlled trial of collaborative-goal setting versus goal-setting plus community health worker support among pa

This study examines both provider and client perceptions of the extent to which general health concerns are addressed in the context of publicly supported family planning care. A mail survey of family planning providers (n = 459) accepting Medicaid-covered clients in Arkansas and Alabama gathered data on reported actions and resource referral availability for ten categories of non-contraceptive health concerns. A telephone survey of recent family planning clients of these providers (n = 1991) gathered data on the presence of 16 health concerns and whether and how they were addressed by the fam

Post-9/11, concern about bioterrorism has transformed public health from unappreciated to a central component of national security. Within the War on Terror, bioterrorism preparedness has taken a back seat only to direct military action in terms of funding. Domestically, homelessness, joblessness, crime, education, and race relations are just a few of a litany of pressing issues requiring government attention. Even within the biomedical sciences and healthcare, issues surrounding the fact that more than 40 million Americans lack health insurance, the rising cost of prescription medications, an

INTRODUCTION: Family planning is a fundamental human right and contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals. Women who have migrated from low- and middle-income countries may encounter barriers to family planning and reproductive healthcare. This study examined access to family planning information and services and related care needs among first-generation women with migration histories in Berlin, Germany.
METHODS: We conducted a qualitatively driven, emergent sequential mixed-methods study with 29 first-generation women who had migrated from low- and middle-income countries to Berlin

BACKGROUND: Tanzania and Uganda have high total fertility and maternal mortality rates, and low contraceptive prevalence rates. High-quality preservice family planning education for nurses and midwives can improve the quality of sexual and reproductive health care, thereby improving health outcomes.
DESCRIPTION OF INTERVENTION: In 2015, we worked with relevant stakeholders in Tanzania and Uganda through a series of surveys, assessments, and workshops to adapt modules of the Training Resource Package for Family Planning (TRP), an evidence-based global resource, to improve the quality of preser

OBJECTIVES: Family planning researchers have not critically engaged with topics of race, racism, and associated concepts like ethnicity. This lack of engagement contributes to the reproduction of research that reifies racial hierarchies rather than illuminate and interrupt the processes by which racism affects health. This Research Practice Support paper lays out considerations and best practices for addressing race and racism in quantitative family planning research.
STUDY DESIGN: We are scholars with racialized identities and expertise in racial health equity in family planning research. We

BACKGROUND: One of the most important risk factors for coronary artery disease is physical inactivity. Health psychological research demonstrates the importance of planning for behaviour change success. Consequently, a health action process approach (HAPA) model-based design to support the uptake of physical activity was initiated for the first time in an acute cardiac ward.
METHODS: For impact evaluation, a control group (CG) and an intervention group (IG) of coronary artery disease patients were compared in a controlled longitudinal study. Baseline assessment included socio-demographic vari

The persistent underuse of family planning services by inner-city, low-income, sexually active youth underscores the importance of testing innovative programs that maximize participation. Presented in this paper is an analysis of a Chicago public health clinic's special program for adolescents that originated from the staff's observations of the scheduling, educational, and support needs of teens seeking family planning services from a traditionally managed public health facility. Between December 1982, when the special program--the Teen Clinic--was implemented, and March 1985, more than 600 a

KEY POINTS: Higher critical health literacy was associated with informal advance care planning, while higher total health literacy was associated with both informal and formal advance care planning in patients receiving hemodialysis. Patients unsure about treatment preferences had lower total health literacy, and lack of opportunity was the most common barrier to advance care planning engagement. Enhancing health literacy and providing structured opportunities for advance care planning may support patient-centered decision making in dialysis care.

AIM: The study aim was to describe the content of person-centred health plans, formulated via telephone conversations between registered nurses and patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and/or chronic heart failure.
METHOD: Patients who had been hospitalised due to worsening chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and/or chronic heart failure were enrolled. After hospital discharge, the patients received a person-centred telephone support where a health plan was co-created with registered nurses who had received training in the theory and practice of person-centred care. BACKGROUND: Publicly available cancer indicators are increasingly used to guide regional health-care planning and investment. Their robustness for decision-making in remote or insular regions remains insufficiently examined.
METHODS: We analysed publicly available incidence, mortality, standardised incidence ratios, standardised mortality ratios, mortality-to-incidence ratios (MIR), premature mortality and temporal trends using Corsica as a stress test and comparing with other French regions using national datasets. Indicators were compared using confidence intervals, temporal aggregation and

In the Unified Health System (SUS), one of the central challenges for workforce planning is adapting to the growing demands of public health. State Health Plans (PES) are management and social control instruments that define the guidelines and priority actions of the states, including those perspectives on work management, the focus of this present study. 22 PES were analyzed for the four-year period 2024-2027, considering three axes: Health Work Regulation; Valuing health work; and, Workforce Planning. The results highlight the diversity of proposed actions, such as the creation of job, caree
