The life satisfaction of the elderly is the key to subjective well-being and healthy aging. Many related studies are focused on the affected factors, including health status, economic level, social support, pension mode, social security, and intergenerational support, etc., but few are based on the macro perspective of healthy aging. This study constructed a healthy aging evaluation system with 6 dimensions, including 15 primary indicators and 57 secondary indicators, to evaluate the relationship between healthy aging and elderly life satisfaction. Results showed that the 13168 participants we…

BACKGROUND: Given an increase in the aging population and its impact on healthcare systems, policy makers for provision of health and social services are aiming to keep older adults in good health for longer, in other words towards 'healthy aging'. Our study objective is to show that rehabilitation with cochlear implant treatment in the elderly with hearing impairment improves the overall health-related quality of life and general well-being that translate into healthy aging.
METHODS: The multicentre, prospective, repeated measures, single-subject, clinical observational study will accrue 100…

Importance: The clock-drawing test (CDT) is an important neurocognitive assessment tool, widely used as a screening test for dementia. Behavioral performance on the test has been studied extensively, but there is scant literature on the underlying neural correlates. Purpose: To administer the CDT naturalistically to a healthy older aging population in an MRI environment, and characterize the brain activity associated with test completion. Main Outcome and Measure: Blood-oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) functional MRI was conducted as participants completed the CDT using novel tablet technology. B

We compared the severity of white matter T2-hyperintensities (WMH) in the frontal lobe and occipital lobe using a visual MRI score in 102 patients with lobar intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) diagnosed with possible or probable cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), 99 patients with hypertension-related deep ICH, and 159 normal elderly subjects from a population-based cohort. The frontal-occipital (FO) gradient was used to describe the difference in the severity of WMH between the frontal lobe and occipital lobe. A higher proportion of subjects with obvious occipital dominant WMH (FO gradient ≤-2) wa

Sleep plays an important role in learning, memory encoding, and cognition. Insufficient quantity or quality of sleep leads not only to short-term neurocognitive dysfunction but also to permanent changes to the central nervous system. Sleep disorders are common in the geriatric population. The hypoxemia and sleep fragmentation resulting from obstructive sleep apnea are the most likely pathophysiology responsible for damage to the brain. Because treatment of these sleep disorders can lead to improved cognitive function, it is becoming increasingly important for physicians to be able to correctly

One of the most significant risk factors for diseases is aging. Interestingly, some organisms, such as naked mole-rats and most turtles, do not exhibit typical aging-like symptoms or increased mortality as they become older. These aspects indicate that aging is not necessarily an essential event for animal life and are avoidable. Overcoming aging would free humans from age-associated diseases (AADs) and prolong lifespans. Recent studies have demonstrated that one of the causes of age-related organ dysfunction is excessive chronic inflammation caused by the accumulation of senescent cells (SNCs

In contrast to acute dehydration, which is usually recognized through identifiable risk factors, clinical signs, and laboratory abnormalities, chronic dehydration develops insidiously and frequently goes unrecognized. This is particularly true in older adults, among whom many of its nonspecific manifestations-such as weakness, constipation, headache, dizziness, gait instability, and confusion-are often mistakenly attributed to normal aging. This population is especially vulnerable to chronic dehydration because of age-related normal physiological changes, compounded by physical, cognitive, psy

INTRODUCTION: The propagation of neural signals across various brain regions requires us to understand directional connectivity in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. We employ temporal partial directed coherence (TPDC), a data driven method to explore directional connectivity in young and old healthy individuals, manifest PD and prodromal PD patients. TPDC provides comprehensive analysis of neural signal propagation compared to traditional methods like Dynamic Causal Modeling, Granger Causality and Transfer Entropy.
METHODS: We analyzed preprocessed fMRI data from the young an

In a super-aging society, the increase in the elderly population is closely tied to a rise in infectious diseases due to factors such as weakened immune systems and decreased vaccine efficacy in older adults. Various opportunistic pathogens commonly encountered in everyday life can cause infections and diseases when an individual's immune defence is weakened due to aging. These factors underscore the importance of preventive measures against pathogenic infections and the aging of immune systems in the elderly. The immune response acts as the defence mechanism against foreign substances, includ

Aging is a lifelong process, and many chronic diseases and geriatric syndromes are influenced by lifestyle factors. Here, we discuss the benefits of integrating education in geriatrics and lifestyle medicine to not only improve competency of health professions learners in each area, but also so that learners can promote healthy aging in the clinical care of their future patients. We review the current state of geriatrics education, the role of lifestyle medicine in aging, and strategies to bridge the gaps between geriatrics and lifestyle medicine.

Early detection of Alzheimer's disease is essential to develop preventive treatment strategies. Detectible change in brain volume emerges relatively late in the pathogenic progression of disease, but microstructural changes caused by early neuropathology may cause subtle changes in the MR signal, quantifiable using texture analysis. Texture analysis quantifies spatial patterns in an image, such as smoothness, randomness and heterogeneity. We investigated whether the MRI texture of the hippocampus, an early site of Alzheimer's disease pathology, is sensitive to changes in brain microstructure b

For decades, visual entrainment paradigms have been widely used to investigate basic visual processing in healthy individuals and those with neurological disorders. While healthy aging is known to be associated with alterations in visual processing, whether this extends to visual entrainment responses and the precise cortical regions involved is not fully understood. Such knowledge is imperative given the recent surge in interest surrounding the use of flicker stimulation and entrainment in the context of identifying and treating Alzheimer's disease (AD). In the current study, we examined visu…

Phasic alerting cues temporarily increase the brain's arousal state. In younger and older participants, visual processing speed in a whole report task, estimated based on the theory of visual attention, is higher in cue than no-cue conditions. The present study assessed whether older participants' ability to profit from warning cues is related to intrinsic functional connectivity (iFC) in the cingulo-opercular and/or right fronto-parietal network. We acquired resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from 31 older participants. By combining an independent component analysis and

The exponential increase in the incidence of fragility fractures in older people is attributed to attenuation of both bone strength and neuromuscular function. Decrease in bone mineral density (BMD) does not entirely explain this increase. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of age on various parameters related to bone health with aging, and to identify combinations of factors that collectively express the bone metabolic state in healthy postmenopausal women. Height, weight, and grip strength were measured in 135 healthy postmenopausal volunteer women. Hip BMD, biomechanic
