Hemoglobin (Hb) S and Hb E are the most common variant hemoglobins, but because of the geographical separation of the areas where they are p … ucid interval. The autopsy was significant only for postmortem intravascular sickling. A postmortem hemoglobin electrophoresis test revealed 57% S, 34% E, and 1% F hemoglobins. The death is attributed to cardiac ischemia from functional vaso-occlusion by sickled erythrocytes.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the ARKRAY ADAMS A1c HA-8180T analyzer for diagnosis of thalassemias and hemoglobinopathies commonly found in the Southeast Asian population.
METHODS: Our cohort consisted of 557 specimens from adults referred for thalassemia diagnosis. From these, we selected 457 specimens and subjected them to DNA analysis to determine various thalassemia genotypes. Also, to confirm the reference range for HbA2, we obtained an additional 48 specimens from healthy individuals. We estimated the diagnostic range for Hb E from specimens from another 52 subject individuals previously diagn

In order to assess the prevalence of the traits of alpha- and beta-thalassaemia as well as of haemoglobin E among Indonesians a survey was conducted in Surabaya, a city of over 3 million inhabitants in one of the most densely populated areas of Indonesia. 450 medical students representing healthy adults were examined with the following results: 18 persons (4%) harboured the beta-thalassaemia trait and 28 (6.2%) had the Hb E trait giving a gene frequency of 0.0202 and 0.0315, respectively. 10 persons (2.2%) had the alpha-thalassaemia trait.

HbE, beta thalassemia, and G6PD deficiency were demonstrated in a 6-year-old Mexican-American child with anemia, jaundice, and delayed growth. The father was heterozygous for HbE, and the mother for beta-thalassemia and G6PD deficiency. The association of these three diseases should be included in the differential diagnosis of anemia in childhood, particularly after the recent influx of people form Southeast Asia into the United States.

BACKGROUND: Anemia is common in Cambodian women. Potential causes include micronutrient deficiencies, genetic hemoglobin disorders, inflamma … amin B-12, retinol binding protein (RBP), C-reactive protein (CRP), and α1 acid glycoprotein (AGP). Hemoglobin electrophoresis and multiplex polymerase chain reaction were used to determine the prevalence and type of genetic hemoglobin disorders.
RESULTS: Overall, 54% of women had a genetic hemoglobin disorder, which included 25 different genotypes (most comm …

The occurrence of different types of hemoglobin variants in India has been well-documented in urban populations and in certain tribal areas. Beta-thalassaemia and hemoglobins D,E,H,S, and rare variants like Hb Lepore, have been found in varying percentages. There is a higher incidence of Hb E in the Eastern region and of Hb D in certain Northern populations. The association of Hb E with beta thalassaemia G6PD deficiency has been established. The relationship with other environmental factors, like malaria, is not yet clear.

Haemoglobin E (alpha 2 beta 2(26)Glu leads to Lys) is one of the commonest haemoglobin variants. There are an estimated 30 million carriers of the beta E gene in South-East Asia, where they comprise more than 50% of the population in some areas; however, the reasons for this high frequency have never been adequately explained. Homozygotes for HbE may be midly anaemic, but they do not have any clinical disability. However, individuals heterozygous for both beta E and beta thalassaemia (HbE/beta thalassaemia) have a severe clinical disorder which in some cases may approach that seen in homozygou

The haemoglobinopathies are the commonest single-gene disorders known, almost certainly because of the protection they provide against malaria, as attested by a number of observations. The geographical distributions of malaria and haemoglobinopathies largely overlap, and microepidemiological surveys confirm the close relationship between them. For two of the commonest disorders, haemoglobin S and alpha(+)-thalassaemia, there is also good clinical evidence for protection against malaria morbidity. However, not all the evidence appears to support this view. In some parts of the world malaria and

The discovery that mutant beta-globin genes arise on different chromosomal backgrounds has allowed studies of the origin and spread of some of the common haemoglobinopathies. The beta S mutation has a wide geographic distribution and is found on many different haplotypes, suggesting that it has had multiple independent origins. In contrast, the Indian beta 0 deletion thalassaemia has a restricted geographic distribution and is present on a single haplotype, suggesting a single origin. The limited evidence for the beta-thalassaemia mutations indicates that most have had a single origin and have

AIM: To study the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the level of fetal hemoglobin (HbF) in hydroxyurea (HU)-treated E beta thalassaemia.
METHODS: We have measured SOD level, HbF, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), packed cell volume (PCV) and hemoglobin (Hb) of E beta thalassaemia treated with HU (dose 30 mg/kg/day) for consecutive 90 days.
RESULT: The increase of HbF synthesis without increase of Hb was observed in HU-treated patients.
CONCLUSION: The decreased SOD level in long term and low dose of HU therapy in E beta thalassaemia may have some role to inhibit superoxide radical of

The mean serum and adjusted red cell folate levels, as measured by microassay using Lactobacillus casei, respectively were 8.87 +/- SD 3.28 microgram/l and 436 +/- SD 107 microgram/l in 76 normal subjects, 4.22 +/- SD 2.70 microgram/l and 182 +/- SD 114 microgram/l in 55 patients with beta-thalassaemia/Hb E disease and 6.36 +/- SD 2.95 microgram/l and 320 +/- 158 microgram/l in 37 patients with Hb H disease. The mean serum and adjusted red cell folate values of the patients with beta-thalassaemia/Hb E disease and the mean serum folate value of the patients with Hb H disease were significantly

Hb Q-Thailand [α74(EF3)Asp→His (α1), GAC>CAC, HBA1: c.223G>C] is an abnormal hemoglobin (Hb) frequently found in Thailand and Southeast Asian countries. The association of the αQ-Thailand allele with other globin gene disorders has important implications in diagnosis. Here, we report how to diagnose the coinheritance of Hb Q-Thailand with β-thalassemia (β-thal)/Hb E disease in four Thai samples from high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and capillary electrophoresis (CE) testing results. Understanding of the HPLC chromatogram and CE electropherogram patterns of this complex mutation is

We describe the molecular and hematological profiles of thalassemia syndromes caused by interactions of hemoglobin (Hb) Q-Thailand [α74(EF3) Asp-His] and various hemoglobinopathies found in 52 unrelated adult Thai subjects. Ten genotypes including several previously undescribed conditions were observed, which were classified into 4 groups. Group I included 26 Hb Q-Thailand heterozygotes and a homozygotous subject. Group II included subjects with Hb Q-Thailand and other α-thalassemia alleles in trans including 1 compound Hb Q-Thailand/α(+)-thalassemia (-α(3.7)), 2 Hb Q-Thailand/Hb Constant Spri

The haematological findings resulting from the interaction of Hb A2 Indonesia trait with beta-thalassaemia trait and HbA2 Ind trait with Hb E trait are discussed. A person doubly heterozygous for Hb A2 Ind and beta-thalassaemia had mild haematological abnormalities essentially similar to those found in persons with beta-thalassaemia trait alone. A carrier for both Hb A2 Ind trait and Hb E trait had essentially normal haematological findings.
