OBJECTIVE: To investigate the protective role of Cardiospermum halicacabum (C. halicacabum) leaf extract on glycoprotein metabolism in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats.

Patients with mucopolysaccharidosis have been reported to excrete elevated amounts of sulfated N-acetylhexosamines in their urine. Based on this finding, a new and simple colorimetric screening test for these disorders is presented. Acid GAG were isolated from hepatic tissue from 3 patients with Hurler syndrome and 3 normal controls. Gross elevations in the uronic acid and hexosamine contents were found in Hurler livers compared with the normal ones. Septic joints were produced in rabbits which were then treated with systemic procaine penicillin. One group of animals also had surgical lavage at four and seven days after bacterial inoculation. In the infected joints there was a significant loss of hexosamine by five days and of collagen by nine days. Lavage delayed the loss of collagen.

Content, composition and molecular weight distribution of acidic glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) were determined in liver from five patients with genetic lysosomal storage diseases (Hurler syndrome, Hunter syndrome of severe type, Morquio syndrome, GM1-gangliosidosis type II and I-cell disease).
