Seizures, hormones and sexuality.

Sexual disorders (both hyposexuality and sexual dysfunction) are common in people with epilepsy, occurring in up to two-thirds of patients. … between these endocrine changes and hyposexuality is not known. The relationship between seizures, hormones and anticonvulsant medication in women is explored, focusing on issues such as catamenial epilepsy, the menopause, hormone replacement therapy and the polycystic ovarian syndrome. Suggestions for future research and treatment issues are discussed.

Sex hormones and headache.

The normal female life cycle is associated with a number of hormonal milestones: menarche, pregnancy, contraceptive use, menopause, and the use of replacement sex hormones. Menarche marks the onset of menses and cyclic changes in hormone levels. Pregnancy is associated with rising noncyclic levels of sex hormones, and menopause with declining noncyclic levels. Hormonal contraceptive use during the reproductive years and hormone replacement in menopause are therapeutic hormonal interventions that alter the levels and cycling of sex hormones. These events and interventions may cause a change in …

[Hypertension and steroid hormones].

Mineralocorticoid excess causes hypertension by facilitating the sodium retension at renal tubules. Such mechanism operates in hypertension such as primary hyperaldosteronism and some forms of congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Recently, deficient cortisol metabolism in the aldosterone target organ has been recognized as a novel form of hypertension known as apparent mineralocorticoid excess. In this review hypertensive disorders caused by adrenal cortical hormones is briefly stated.

Hormones and psychosexual differentiation.

The male phenotype arises from the optimal concordance of chromosomal, gonadal and hormonal sex. Hormonal sex depends directly on the type of gonads that have been formed, and is linked both to the production of hormones and to their optimal effect on target tissues. The present review underlines the fact that psychosexual orientation in the male is also related to factors linked to sex hormones. Many of the experimental and clinical data available militate against the long-held belief that the development of role and gender identity in man is predominantly determined by environmental factors.…

Insight into Potential Interactions of Thyroid Hormones, Sex Hormones and Their Stimulating Hormones in the Development of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is a common manifestation of metabolic syndrome. In addition to lifestyle, endocrine hormones play a role in the dysregulation of hepatic metabolism. The most common endocrine hormones contributing to metabolic syndrome are alterations in the levels of thyroid hormones (THs, predominantly in subclinical hypothyroidism) and of sex hormones (in menopause). These hormonal changes influence hepatic lipid and glucose metabolism and may increase hepatic fat accumulation. This review compares the effects of sex hormones, THs and the respective stimulating hor…

Perspective: Hormones and immune development: bidirectional regulation between thyroid hormones and the immune system.

The immune system operates within a dynamic physiological environment shaped by systemic regulatory signals, among which endocrine factors are increasingly recognized as important modulators of immune function. Although thyroid hormones are well known for their roles in metabolism and development, their contribution to adaptive immunity, particularly in regulating T cell responses, remains incompletely understood. Emerging evidence suggests that thyroid-immune interactions are context-dependent across physiological and pathological conditions. In this Perspective, we propose that thyroid hormo…

Use of exogenous hormones hormones and risk of papillary thyroid cancer (Washington, United States).

OBJECTIVES: Greater incidence of thyroid cancer in women than men, particularly evident during the reproductive years, has led to the suggestion that female hormones may increase risk of this disease. We conducted a population-based case-control study in women aged 18 to 64 years in three counties of western Washington State (United States) to assess the relation of use of exogenous hormones, including oral contraceptives (OC) and hormone replacement therapy (HRT), to risk of papillary thyroid cancer. METHODS: Of 558 women with thyroid cancer of the follicular epithelium diagnosed during 1988…
