Intestinal neoplasia in horses.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal neoplasia of horses is inadequately described. HYPOTHESIS: Intestinal neoplasia of horses has characteristic clinicopathologic features. ANIMALS: Thirty-four horses with intestinal neoplasia. METHODS: Retrospective study. RESULTS: Anamnesis, clinical signs, clinicopathologic and pathologic findings in 34 adult horses diagnosed histologically with intestinal neoplasia were reviewed. The horses ranged in age from 2 to 30 years (mean 16.6 years at presentation). The Arabian breed was most represented and there was no sex predisposition. The most common presenting compla…

Disease transmission in horses.

Bacterial, viral and protozoal infections may cause severe reproductive losses. The present paper reviews the risk factors, clinical signs and preventive measures for the most important venereal or potential sexually transmitted diseases in horses. The stallion and use of semen for artificial insemination represent major risk factors for the transmission of bacterial contaminants of the penis, including Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae, known to cause endometritis and infertility in the mare. The role of the stallion in disease trans…

Metal toxicosis in horses.

The ubiquity and stability of metals in the environment make them unique as a pollutant or an essential dietary component. Metals are neither created nor destroyed by chemical processes but are redistributed in the environment. In combination with other elements, metal compounds and alloys are essential materials of the contemporary world. Inappropriate use or distribution in the environment leads to adverse health effects on all biologic systems, including horses. Gastrointestinal upset is a common feature of acute toxicosis with metals in general. Among the metals discussed, arsenic and inor…

Leptospira abortion in horses.

Leptospira infection was diagnosed as the cause of 4 late-term equine abortions/stillbirths and 1 neonatal death in Louisiana. The most consistent gross and microscopic lesions were icterus and interstitial nephritis, respectively. Diagnoses were based on visualization of compatible spirochetes in Warthin-Starry-stained sections of kidney, liver, and placenta. Confirmation by immunofluorescence was made in 2 cases.

Lymphangiosarcoma in a horse.

A 15-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare presented with respiratory distress and anorexia. Clinical examination revealed liquothorax and an abdominal mass. At necropsy, an infiltrating tumour was found in the visceral trunk, continuing through the diaphragm into the mediastinum. Histopathology, immunohistochemistry and electronmicroscopy showed empty channels lined by atypical endothelial cells, and neoplastic cells in a disorganized pattern, consistent with the diagnosis of a lymphangiosarcoma.

Endotoxaemia in the horse.

Endotoxins are non-protein fragments of the cell wall of Gram-negative bacteria. They must be absorbed into the circulation to produce disease and systemic effects are similar, regardless of bacterial source. Absorption of endotoxins occurs in obstructive bowel disease and may play a significant part in determining the severity of the disease. Many of the responses to experimentally administered endotoxin are identical to those of bowel diseases or the horse and include circulatory, haematological and metabolic alterations. Therapeutic approaches are indirect and include many drugs currently e
