Reverse Zoonosis of COVID-19: Lessons From the 2009 Influenza Pandemic.

Over the past decade, pandemics caused by pandemic H1N1 (pH1N1) influenza virus in 2009 and severe acute respiratory syndrome virus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in 2019 have emerged. Both are high-impact respiratory pathogens originating from animals. Their wide distribution in the human population subsequently results in an increased risk of human-to-animal transmission: reverse zoonosis. Although there have only been rare reports of reverse zoonosis events associated with the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic from SARS-CoV-2 so far, comparison with the pH1N1 influenza pandemic can

Conserved Genomic Terminals of SARS-CoV-2 as Co-evolving Functional Elements and Potential Therapeutic Targets.

To identify features in the genome of the SARS-CoV-2 pathogen responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic that may contribute to its viral replication, host pathogenicity, and vulnerabilities, we investigated how and to what extent the SARS-CoV-2 genome sequence differs from other well-characterized human and animal coronavirus genomes. Our analyses suggest the presence of unique sequence signatures in the 3'-untranslated region (UTR) of betacoronavirus lineage B, which phylogenetically encompasses SARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV, as well as multiple groups of bat and animal coronaviruses. In addition, we iden

Three-dimensional models of the cervicovaginal epithelia to study host-microbiome interactions and sexually transmitted infections.

2D cell culture systems have historically provided controlled, reproducible means to analyze host-pathogen interactions observed in the human reproductive tract. Although inexpensive, straightforward, and requiring a very short time commitment, these models recapitulate neither the functionality of multilayered cell types nor the associated microbiome that occurs in a human. Animal models have commonly been used to recreate the complexity of human infections. However, extensive modifications of animal models are required to recreate interactions that resemble those in the human reproductive tr

Fully Human Tumor-based Matrix in Three-dimensional Spheroid Invasion Assay.

Two-dimensional cell culture-based assays are commonly used in in vitro cancer research. However, they lack several basic elements that form the tumor microenvironment. To obtain more reliable in vitro results, several three-dimensional (3D) cell culture assays have been introduced. These assays allow cancer cells to interact with the extracellular matrix. This interaction affects cell behavior, such as proliferation and invasion, as well as cell morphology. Additionally, this interaction could induce or suppress the expression of several pro- and anti-tumorigenic molecules. Spheroid invasion

Lethal Synergistic Infections by Two Concurrent Respiratory Pathogens.

Lethal synergistic infections by concurrent pathogens have occurred in humans, including human immunodeficiency virus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections, or in animal or human models of influenza virus, or bacteria, e.g., Streptococcus pneumoniae, concurrent with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). However, the intracellular synergistic interaction possibilities between two respiratory viral pathogens, or between viral and fungal pathogens, merits additional examination. The requirements for synergistic concurrent pathogen infections are: a) relatively little d

Cross-species conversations: the development of the AURAL-Pet coding system to capture how people talk to pets in daily life.

While pets are a well-established fixture in many households, how owners perceive their pets' roles can range from distant housemates to casual companions to trusted confidantes. At the same time, findings relating to the impact pets have on human health and wellbeing are mixed. A potential explanation for these disparate effects is the naturally occurring variation in daily human-pet interactions and relationship quality. However, there is a lack of methodological approaches that can accurately quantify naturalistic interactions between people and their pets with limited bias. To address this

Network of Interactions between ZIKA Virus Non-Structural Proteins and Human Host Proteins.

The Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne Flavivirus and can be transmitted through an infected mosquito bite or through human-to-human interaction by sexual activity, blood transfusion, breastfeeding, or perinatal exposure. After the 2015-2016 outbreak in Brazil, a strong link between ZIKV infection and microcephaly emerged. ZIKV specifically targets human neural progenitor cells, suggesting that proteins encoded by ZIKV bind and inactivate host cell proteins, leading to microcephaly. Here, we present a systematic annotation of interactions between human proteins and the seven non-structural

Cognitive performance and variability in dromedary camels: insights from a comparative psychometric approach.

Contemporary research in animal cognition has expanded our understanding of non-human intelligence, yet behavioural and cognitive traits in dromedary camels remain largely unexplored. This study pioneers the empirical assessment of cognitive performance and variability in dromedaries (Camelus dromedarius) using a comparative psychometric framework adapted from human and animal cognition protocols. A total of 130 Canarian dromedaries were evaluated across thirteen cognitive traits, with individual performance indices calculated through a mental age-based model. Results revealed substantial inte

Dying like a dog: the convergence of concepts of a good death in human and veterinary medicine.

Standard views of good death in human and veterinary medicine considerably differ from one another. Whereas the good death ideal in palliative medicine emphasizes the positive aspects of non-induced dying, veterinarians typically promote a quick and painless killing with the aim to end suffering. Recent developments suggest a convergence of both professions and professional attitudes, however. Palliative physicians are confronted with patients wishing to be 'put to sleep', while veterinarians have begun to integrate principles and practices from hospice care. We will argue that the discourses

Ultrastructural characterization of host-parasite interactions of Plasmodium coatneyi in rhesus macaques.

Plasmodium coatneyi has been proposed as an animal model for human Plasmodium falciparum malaria as it appears to replicate many aspects of pathogenesis and clinical symptomology. As part of the ongoing evaluation of the rhesus macaque model of severe malaria, a detailed ultrastructural analysis of the interaction between the parasite and both the host erythrocytes and the microvasculature was undertaken. Tissue (brain, heart and kidney) from splenectomized rhesus macaques and blood from spleen-intact animals infected with P. coatneyi were examined by electron microscopy. In all three tissues,

Development of affinity to the stockperson in lambs from two breeds.

The interactions between genetic and environmental factors on the development of lamb affinity to humans was assessed on 48 animals from two breeds (Gentile di Puglia and Comisana) and two treatments (Gentled and Not Gentled) producing 4 groups (GPg, GPng, Cg, Cng, respectively). The Gentile di Puglia and Comisana gentled animals were subjected to a period of training consisting of gently handling each lamb for 5 min three times a day for the first week and then twice a week for three additional weeks. The gentling procedure included both tactile and visual/auditory interactions. At 30-32 days

Analysis of Salmonella enterica Adhesion to Leaves of Corn Salad or Lettuce.

Human infections by gastrointestinal bacterial pathogens are commonly associated with the consumption of contaminated food of animal origin (e.g., chicken, fish, eggs) or contaminated water. However, further contamination sources must be considered since number of Salmonella enterica infections associated with the consumption of food of non-animal origin (e.g., vegetables, fruits, nuts) are increasing. This gives raise to interest in understanding the interaction of S. enterica with leafy produce, such as various salads. Especially adhesion as initial step of contamination of salad by S. enter

Multidrug resistant Enterobacteriaceae in New Zealand: a current perspective.

In this article we review mechanisms and potential transmission pathways of multidrug resistance in Enterobacteriaceae, with an emphasis on extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-production. This provides background to better understand challenges presented by this important group of antimicrobial resistant bacteria, and inform measures aimed at prevention and control of antimicrobial resistance in general. Humans and animals interact at various levels; household pets cohabit with humans, and other animals interact with people through direct contact, as well as through the food chain and the env

The Importance of Evaluating Positive Welfare Characteristics and Temperament in Working Therapy Dogs.

To date, investigations of the welfare of therapy dogs have focused largely on examining physiological and behavioral measures that could indicate if the animal is experiencing stress or distress. However, this approach does not fully address the definition of welfare which is often described as existing on a continuum from negative (or stressful) to positive. With therapy dogs, it would be worth addressing if they experience positive emotional affect while working since the quality and efficacy of animal-assisted interventions for the human recipient is likely to be influenced by the animal's

Nutrition and Metabolism: Foundations for Animal Growth, Development, Reproduction, and Health.

Consumption of high-quality animal protein plays an important role in improving human nutrition, growth, development, and health. With an exponential growth of the global population, demands for animal-sourced protein are expected to increase by 60% between 2021 and 2050. In addition to the production of food protein and fiber (wool), animals are useful models for biomedical research to prevent and treat human diseases and serve as bioreactors to produce therapeutic proteins. For a high efficiency to transform low-quality feedstuffs and forages into high-quality protein and highly bioavailable

The Galleria mellonella larvae as an in vivo model for evaluation of Shigella virulence.

Shigella spp. causing bacterial diarrhea and dysentery are human enteroinvasive bacterial pathogens that are orally transmitted through contaminated food and water and cause bacillary dysentery. Although natural Shigella infections are restricted to humans and primates, several smaller animal models are used to analyze individual steps in pathogenesis. No animal model fully duplicates the human response and sustaining the models requires expensive animals, costly maintenance of animal facilities, veterinary services and approved animal protocols. This study proposes the development of the cate

Genetic susceptibility and severity of alopecia areata in human and animal models.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a non-scarring, inflammatory form of hair loss. Human and animal model observations suggest that AA is an autoimmune mediated disease. Genetic influence has been clearly demonstrated in many other autoimmune diseases and one would expect that AA is no exception. AA in rodent models involves genetic susceptibility and it is possible to cross breed the AA phenotype to unrelated rodent strains. Segregation analysis of rodent breeding programs suggests the involvement of several dominant and secondary genes. The increased frequency of AA in genetically related individuals,

Strategies of exploitation of mammalian reservoirs by Bartonella species.

Numerous mammal species, including domestic and wild animals such as ruminants, dogs, cats and rodents, as well as humans, serve as reservoir hosts for various Bartonella species. Some of those species that exploit non-human mammals as reservoir hosts have zoonotic potential. Our understanding of interactions between bartonellae and reservoir hosts has been greatly improved by the development of animal models for infection and the use of molecular tools allowing large scale mutagenesis of Bartonella species. By reviewing and combining the results of these and other approaches we can obtain a c

Animal-Assisted Intervention (AAI) in a Recovery-Oriented Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program.

INTRODUCTION: Previous animal-assisted interventions (AAI) studies have documented that human-animal interaction can reduce anxiety levels and improve social skills and quality of life. In recent decades there was a growing evidence on the benefits achievable through human-animal relationship in different categories of people, such as children with autism spectrum disorder, elderly patients affected by dementia, patients with psychiatric disorders and alcohol/drug addiction. METHODS: In the present study ten patients from psychiatric residential facilities belonging to the EPASSS Foundation w

Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia and Innate Immunity: A Narrative Review of the Roles of IL-1β and IL-8 (CXCL8).

Background: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a leading chronic lung complication in extremely premature newborns. The etiological factors contributing to of BPD include both prenatal and postnatal risk factors, as well as activation of innate immunity. Innate immunity and its bioactive mediators play a central role in orchestrating the inflammatory response. Among these, interleukin-1β (IL-1 β) and IL-8 (CXCL8) are particularly prominent. Methods: A structured literature search was conducted across major biomedical databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Ovid MEDLINE) to identify rel
