Cardiovascular complications are the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). To understand this relationship, known cardiovascular risk factors were examined in ADPKD. Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a known, important risk factor for premature cardiovascular death in patients with essential hypertension. Hypertension is known to occur frequently and early in ADPKD patients. The frequency of LVH in ADPKD patients and its relation with hypertension and other risk factors, however, is not known. In this study, echo

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) have been found to have a better prognosis than patients without LVH. However, the pathophysiologic mechanism for that has not been investigated. We sought to clarify the pathophysiologic significance of LVH in DCM.
METHODS: We performed isoproterenol infusion echocardiography (0.02 micrograms/kg/min) in 17 patients with DCM, and measured plasma epinephrine and norepinephrine levels at rest and at the end of ergometer exercise in 14 of the 17 patients. Patients were classified into gr

Although aortic regurgitation (AR) in patients with Takayasu arteritis (TA) is believed to be caused by dilatation of the aortic ring or thickening of the aortic cusps, the pattern of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in these patients has not been described. To clarify the geometry of the LV in patients with TA that had been documented both echocardiographically and hemodynamically, the authors evaluated 22 patients with TA and severe AR (group 1), 10 with TA and systemic hypertension (group 2), and 17 with isolated severe AR of other etiologies (group 3). M-mode echocardiography showed that

The diagnosis of myocardial ischemia due to coronary artery disease in the presence of left ventricular hypertrophy associated with chest pain and ST-T wave changes is difficult. Resting and exercise ST changes are not specific and even stress or dipyridamole Thallium scintigraphy may give erroneous results. In fact, the changes of myocardial perfusion induced by left ventricular hypertrophy reflect a reduction of coronary vasodilator reserve and the increased coronary vascular resistance explains the angina with normal coronary arteries observed in these patients. The reduction of coronary re

BACKGROUND: Perinatal growth has important implications for cardiac development. Low birth weight is associated with cardiovascular (CV) events and mortality, and animal studies have shown that fetal growth restriction is associated with cardiac remodeling in the perinatal period leading to a permanent loss of cardiomyocyte endowment and compensatory hypertrophy.
AIMS: To determine associations of birthweight (BW) and multiple proportionality indexes (body mass index (BMI); weight/length2 and Ponderal index (PI); weight/length3) at birth on one hand, with left ventricular (LV) structure and f

Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a common abnormality in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to the progression of LVH. As an inner mitochondrial membrane structural protein, mitofilin plays a key role in maintaining mitochondrial structure and function. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between mitofilin and LVH in HD patients. A total of 98 HD patients and 32 healthy controls were included in the study. Serum N-terminal proBNP (NT-proBNP), endothelin-1 (ET-1), and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) were examined. The protein level of m

OBJECTIVES: Patients with chronic kidney disease present a higher degree of left ventricular hypertrophy than expected for hypertension levels. In chronic kidney disease the plot between the quotient extracellular water/total body water and aldosterone is shifted up and to the right. There are few studies that verified the role of aldosterone in cardiac remodeling in this set of patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between serum aldosterone and left ventricular mass index in patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis.
METHODS: The patients were submitted

In this review we show that combination treatment with blockers of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and dihydropyridine calcium antagonists plays the leading role in lowering of left ventricular myocardial mass. We also demonstrate benefits of the use of fixed combinations of drugs for the treatment of patients with arterial hypertension including those with left ventricular hypertrophy, and stress advantages of angiotensin II receptor blockers characterized by low risk of unfavorable effects and high compliance to treatment over other classes of antihypertensive drugs.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is supposed to be a risk factor of cardiovascular (CV) complications in hypertensive patients.
AIM: To compare clinical events in hypertensives with and without LVH.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 319 hypertensives with LVH (mean age 64.1+/-10.6 ys) and 177 hypertensives without LVH (mean age 62.5+/-11.3 ys). LVH defined by echo Penn convention as left ventricular mass index >134 g/m2 in men and >110 g/m2 in women. Clinical events--heart failure (EF<40 %), left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (echo-doppler: transmitral-flow where peak A>peak E), myocar

Regression of left ventricular hypertrophy in hemodialysis patients is possible. Left ventricular hypertrophy represents the major risk factor for cardiac morbidity and mortality. Therefore, their regression is mandatory. Since the causes of uremia-associated left ventricular hypertrophy are multifactorial, various therapeutic options can be considered: optimal control of arterial hypertension and volume status, optimal correction of metabolic acidosis, best possible correction of hypoalbuminemia and severe secondary hyperparathyroidism, modern pharmacotherapeutic strategy for the treatment of

Myocardial work derived from pressure-strain analysis resembles a novel non-invasive method for myocardial function evaluation. Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is commonly detected in Fabry disease (FD), cardiac amyloidosis (CA) and hypertension (HTN). The study aimed to demonstrate the characteristics of myocardial work in patients with LVH suffering from FD, CA, and HTN. Echocardiography were performed in patients with LVH suffering from FD (n = 13), light chain associated cardiac amyloidosis (AL-CA) (n = 29) and HTN (n = 72), 25 healthy controls were also included in the current study. INTRODUCTION: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a common complication to hypertension, indicating the presence of hypertensive heart disease, which puts the patient at a very high risk for subsequent clinical cardiovascular events like sudden cardiac death, stroke, myocardial infarction and heart failure.
AREAS COVERED: The epidemiology of LVH has changed in recent years as a consequence of the development of new diagnostic tools and demographic changes in hypertensive populations. Expert commentary: In individual hypertensive patients, the presence and type of LVH and associated systolic

Two distinct types of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) have been described: the so called "physiologic" hypertrophy, which is normally found in professional athletes, and "pathologic" LVH which is found in patients with inherited heart muscle disease such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) or patients with cardiac and systemic diseases characterized by pressure or volume overload. Patients with pathologic LVH have often symptoms and signs suggestive of myocardial ischemia despite normal coronary angiograms. Under these circumstances ischemia is due to coronary microvascular dysfunction (CM

Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is an independent predictor of major cardiovascular events. Cardiovascular risk is increased among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. To assess LV mass/hypertrophy in HIV infection, 654 women enrolled in the Women's Interagency HIV Study underwent transthoracic echocardiography. There were 454 HIV-infected and 200 uninfected women, mean age 40.8 +/- 9.3 years. LV mass/height(2.7) was similar between the HIV-infected and the HIV-uninfected groups (41.4 +/- 11.1 vs. 39.9 +/- 10.3 g/h(2.7); p = 0.37). The prevalence of LVH was similar between

The effects of physiological left ventricular hypertrophy on coronary reactivity and reserve were examined by comparing greyhounds with their remarkable myocardial hypertrophy with mongrel dogs (left ventricular body weight ratios 7.7(0.1) and 4.4(0.1) g X kg-1 respectively). Peak reactive hyperaemia and flow debt repayment after 15 s coronary occlusions were virtually identical in both groups at baseline heart rates and paced atrial rates up to 270 beats X min-1. Furthermore, the changes in myocardial blood flow and its transmural distribution after release of a 45 s coronary occlusion both a

Both essential hypertension and the development of left ventricular hypertrophy are multifactorial. Several types of hypertrophy may develop. There is evidence that different agents used to treat hypertension may cause varying degrees of regression of left ventricular hypertrophy. In many instances in which regression of left ventricular hypertrophy has occurred in human subjects, there has been an associated improvement in echocardiographic evidence of ventricular function. Although most current evidence suggests that therapy should aim at both the control of blood pressure and the regression
