Behavioral and neural correlates of pareidolic illusions in dementia with Lewy bodies.

INTRODUCTION: Pareidolia, a form of visual illusions phenomenologically similar to complex visual hallucinations, is a phenomenon that is associated with visual hallucinations in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). This study aimed to identify commonalities and differences in behavioral and neural correlates between pareidolic illusions and visual hallucinations in DLB. METHODS: Forty-three patients with DLB underwent the scene pareidolia test, which evokes and measures pareidolic illusions, and standardized neuropsychological and behavioral assessments. Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was m…

Visual hallucinations and illusions in Parkinson's disease: the role of ocular pathology.

INTRODUCTION: Whether different mechanisms, particularly ocular pathology, could lead to the emergence of visual hallucinations (VH) (defined as false perceptions with no external stimulus) versus visual illusions (VI) (defined as a misperception of a real stimulus) in Parkinson's disease (PD) remains debated. We assessed retinal, clinical and structural brain characteristics depending on the presence of VH or VI in PD. METHODS: In this case-control study, we compared retinal thickness using optical coherence tomography (OCT), between PD patients with: VI (PD-I; n = 26), VH (PD-H; n = 28), an…

Kinesthetic illusions attenuate experimental muscle pain, as do muscle and cutaneous stimulation.

In the present study, muscle pain was induced experimentally in healthy subjects by administrating hypertonic saline injections into the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle. We first aimed at comparing the analgesic effects of mechanical vibration applied to either cutaneous or muscle receptors of the TA or to both types simultaneously. Secondly, pain alleviation was compared in subjects in whom muscle tendon vibration evoked kinesthetic illusions of the ankle joint. Muscle tendon vibration, which primarily activated muscle receptors, reduced pain intensity by 30% (p<0.01). In addition, tangential s…

[Chronic visual hallucinations and illusions following brain lesions. A single case study].

Lesions of the visual system do not necessarily lead to deficits in visual function. In some cases, there may even occur Positive Spontaneous Visual Phenomena (PSVP) following cerebral damage. We present data from a male patient with continuous, long-term visual illusions after having experienced cerebral infarction at the age of 56. Basing on conventional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, lesions could be located in areas supported by the lateral and medial occipital artery. Initially, homonymous hemianopsia of the right visual field was found in perimetric examinations, but in the course of six mo…

Signal-detection analysis of the Müller-Lyer and the Horizontal-Vertical illusions.

Perceptual error in the Müller-Lyer and the Horizontal-Vertical illusions was quantified using nonparametric signal-detection measures of sensitivity and response bias. Sensitivity scores were positively related to signal strength with the greatest values observed for the strongest signals. Sensitivity at each signal strength did not differ between the two illusions. Response-bias scores were inversely related to signal strength, with the most conservative biases observed for the strongest signals. Response biases for each signal strength were significantly more conservative for the Horizontal…

ICYM2I: The illusion of multimodal informativeness under missingness.

Multimodal learning is of continued interest in artificial intelligence-based applications, motivated by the potential information gain from combining different data modalities. However, modalities observed in the source environment may differ from the modalities observed in the target environment due to multiple factors, including cost, hardware failure, or the perceived informativeness of a given modality. This change in missingness patterns between the source and target environment has not been carefully studied. Naïve estimation of the information gain associated with including an addition

Minimal clinically important differences and the illusion of precision.

OBJECTIVE: Minimal clinically important differences (MCIDs) are used in palliative care trials to guide sample size calculations and to judge whether changes in patient-reported outcomes represent meaningful benefit. Several methods are used to estimate MCIDs. For the Total Symptom Distress Score (TSDS), two common approaches are the within-patient mean change and receiver-operating characteristic (ROC)-based method.MCIDs derived using these approaches often differ across otherwise similar studies. We examined whether this variability reflects limited sample size or whether commonly used ROC-b

Thermosensory predictive coding underpins an illusion of pain.

The human brain has a remarkable ability to learn and update its beliefs about the world. Here, we investigate how thermosensory learning shapes our subjective experience of temperature and the misperception of pain in response to harmless thermal stimuli. Through computational modeling, we demonstrate that the brain uses a probabilistic predictive coding scheme to update beliefs about temperature changes based on their uncertainty. We find that these expectations directly modulate the perception of pain in the thermal grill illusion. Quantitative microstructural brain imaging further revealed

The "Crowd Size Illusion" and the Relativity of Number Perception.

When we investigate busy visual scenes, how do we estimate the number of objects that we see? Most work on number perception answers this question by focusing on properties of the to-be-estimated set of objects-their number, their size, their relative position, and so on. Here, in contrast, we show that perceived number is influenced by extraneous visual information. In six experiments, participants were shown "crowds" of dots that filled "seats" in a visual grid, asking whether the perceived number is influenced not only by the number of occupied seats, but also the number of unoccupied seats

Laparoscopic Acetabular Surgery (LASY) - vision or illusion?

Displaced acetabular fractures usually require open surgical approaches. Aim of this cadaver study was to evaluate a laparoscopic approach to prepare the anterior acetabular column and the quadrilateral plate in analogy to the laparoscopic pelvic lymphadenectomy. The laparoscopic preparation and anatomy is presented and illustrated step by step in a human cadaver followed by a modular plate osteosynthesis of the anterior column involving the quadrilateral plate is performed via a minimally invasive approach using standard laparoscopic instruments. In conclusion we could demonstrate that the la

A Geometrical Account to Explain the Fat-Face Illusion.

Investigations of the "fat-face" illusion have unanimously agreed that the illusion is face-specific. Here, we offer several manipulations to highlight that the fat-face illusion is not restricted to the bottom image, isn't a property of internal features, facial contour/texture, and in general isn't even specific to faces. We propose the axis of horizontal asymmetry account to contextualize fat-face illusion as a geometry-led illusion.

The Effect of Object Compliance on the Velvet Hand Illusion.

Movement of a grid of bars between the two hands creates the tactile illusion of a velvet-like material, namely, the velvet hand illusion (VHI). It was recently proposed that the VHI is caused by a masking effect; bar movement suppresses conscious perception of tactile inputs from the opposing hand. If this hypothesis sufficiently explains the VHI, the physical properties of the opposing hand should not affect the illusion. Another hypothesis suggests that the integration of inputs from the grid of bars and the hands plays a critical role in the VHI. To compare these two hypotheses, the VHI wa

The Scientific Illusion of Victor Burq (1822-1884).

Victor Burq (1822-1884) is closely associated with a therapy named "burquism" by Jean-Martin Charcot, which was used in treating hysteria, especially hysteric anesthesia and paralysis, by applying metals, mainly copper, to affected zones. In 1876, Charcot, Luys, and Dumontpallier, commissioned by the Société de Biologie, issued 2 opinions validating the results obtained by Burq during the 25 years he dedicated to his research. From that point forward, the careers of these 3 famous physicians were lastingly reoriented toward the practice of hypnosis. This neo-mesmeric resurgence at the end of t

Outbreak or illusion: consequences of 'improved' diagnostics for gonorrhoea.

The sexual health service in Oxford introduced gonorrhoea nucleic amplification acid testing using the BD Viper XTR™ System. For practical reasons, a confirmatory nucleic amplification acid testing using a different platform was not used initially. Following the introduction of nucleic amplification acid testing, the rates of gonorrhoea increased threefold. Concerns were raised that this increase represented an outbreak. A retrospective review of cases over six months suggested that there may have been a number of false-positive results. A prospective study was then undertaken over six months,

The spotlight effect and the illusion of transparency in social anxiety.

[Clark, D. M., & Wells, A. (1995). A cognitive model of social phobia. In: R. G. Heimberg, M. R. Liebowitz, D. A. Hope, & F. R. Schneier (Eds.), Social phobia: diagnosis, assessment, and treatment (pp. 69-93). New York: Guildford Press] cognitive model of social phobia suggests that both public and private sources of information contribute to the construction of the self as a social object, which is thought to maintain the disorder. This study used two concepts developed in social psychology that might help to explain the processes that contribute to the development of this constructed self. T

Inaccurate feedback and performance on the Müller-Lyer illusion.

The effects of accurate and erroneous feedback on magnitude of illusion for the Müller-Lyer illusion were examined. The provision of accurate feedback substantially reduced the magnitude of the Müller-Lyer illusion whereas the influences of inaccurate feedback were dependent upon whether subjects were prompted to overestimate or to underestimate the length of the comparison line.

Wallpaper illusion: cause of disorientation and falls on escalators.

The wallpaper illusion, first described over a century ago, can occur when a person with normal binocular vision views a pattern that is periodic in the horizontal meridian of the visual field. Escalator trends present such a pattern. Evidence is presented favoring the view that disorientation experienced by escalator riders is caused by this illusion. Possibly some of the estimated 60,000 escalator falls occurring in the United States each year are linked to it.
