Saturated saline immersion for the treatment of refractory plantar warts: An open-label, one-arm, single-center trial.

BACKGROUND: Treating plantar warts (PWs) presents a significant challenge due to frequent treatment failures and recurrences. Current therapeutic approaches, such as salicylic acid, cryotherapy, and laser treatment, are destructive. There is a lack of painless and noninvasive treatment options for PWs. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of daily saturated saline immersion PWs over 6 months. METHODS: This single-arm clinical trial enrolled 17 participants with PWs and failed standard treatments, who underwent daily 30-minute saturated saline immersion for 8 weeks. Effectiveness an

Cold caloric microcirculatory reflex disturbance in patients with Parkinson's disease.

The basal skin microcirculatory blood flow and its change in response to a cold caloric stimulus (cold water, 5 degrees C, exposure of one foot for 30 s) were investigated in nine patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and nine normal subjects (controls). The results revealed a significant (p < 0.001) difference between the groups. In the controls there was a strong decrease in the red cell flux (RCF) on cold water exposure, while eight of the nine PD patients revealed no detectable change in RCF; in one patient only there was a less pronounced reaction. It was concluded that the regulation of

Restoration of thermoregulatory response to body cooling by cooling hands and feet.

Deep body temperature fell progressively by 0.5-1.4 degrees C during 3-h immersions in 29 degrees C water. Both in unacclimatized volunteers and, to a lesser degree, in divers in cold-water training, cooling the hands and feet for 1 h in 12 degrees C water during such immersion caused sensation of cold, shivering, and rise in metabolic rate; it caused body temperature to rise in unacclimatized subjects and halted its fall in divers. Tissue conductances generally fell a little in divers but rose in unacclimatized subjects, probably because of muscle blood flow associated with the greater shiver

Differential effect of painful heterotopic stimulation on capsaicin-induced pain and allodynia.

Painful heterotopic stimulation (HTS) may inhibit experimental and clinical pain, an effect known as diffuse noxious inhibitory control (DNIC). This study examined the effect of painful HTS on capsaicin-induced pain intensity, brush-evoked pain intensity and area of brush-evoked pain in humans. Immersion of the foot into painful cold water significantly reduced capsaicin-induced pain intensity and brush-evoked pain intensity in the contralateral forearm, but did not change area of brush-evoked pain. The observed differential effect on the magnitude of pain and hyperalgesia on the one hand and

Footwraps as a Sock Alternative in Disaster Settings: Insights From Trench Foot Prevention.

OBJECTIVE: Trench foot develops after prolonged exposure of the feet to cold, wet conditions (e.g., during floods in cold climates), causing pain, swelling, and impaired gait. It can be prevented by maintaining dry feet and changing socks whenever they become wet. However, sock shortages are common in disaster settings. A practical alternative is cloth footwrapping. This study evaluated footwrap skill acquisition across different age groups and assessed the feasibility of footwraps as sock substitutes. METHODS: A total of 100 laypersons from four age groups completed 10 footwrapping trials. S

Experimental infection of Ixodes scapularis larvae (Acari: Ixodidae) by immersion in low passage cultures of Borrelia burgdorferi.

We describe a procedure for the introduction of Borrelia burgdorferi, the spirochetal agent of Lyme disease, into larvae of the tick vector Ixodes scapularis. Internalized spirochetes were observed in larvae examined after 15 or 45 min immersion at 32 degrees C in liquid culture suspensions of low passage B. burgdorferi strain B31. Larval ticks immersed in low passage strain B31 were able to feed to repletion on white-footed mice. Midguts of larvae contained many spirochetes 1 wk postengorgement, while larvae incubated with high passage strain B31 were free of detectable spirochetes at the sam

Plantar lymphatic network.

Anatomical descriptions of the lymphatic system of the foot remain imprecise. In the present report, we aim to elucidate the anatomical lymphatic plantar network in order to improve current clinical practice on the foot. Lower limbs from a total of 25 human cadavers, 4 amputated limbs, and 8 term fetuses were studied. All cadavers were subjected to injection procedures, formalized, immersed in a solution of hydrogen peroxide, and finally dissected. On 6 of the fetal samples, the diaphanization Spatelholz technique was followed. The superficial lymphatic network of the sole is morphologically d

Aerial exposure and seawater immersion induce distinct transcriptomic responses of the marine pulmonate gastropod, Siphonaria japonica (Donovan, 1824), as determined by Iso-seq and RNA-seq analysis.

Siphonariid limpets are a group of intertidal pulmonate snails that have undergone aquatic-terrestrial evolution followed by secondary recolonization of the marine environment. To elucidate the responses of Siphonaria japonica to extended aerial exposure and seawater immersion, we conducted comparative transcriptome analysis of three tissues (foot, gill, and mantle) using both next-generation RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) and full-length isoform sequencing (Iso-seq) methods. For Iso-seq, 448,457 reads representing a total length of 14,622,086 bp were obtained, which were assembled into 8072 unigene

Deficiency in endogenous modulation of prolonged heat pain in patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Temporomandibular Disorder.

Females with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) are characterized by enhanced sensitivity to experimental pain. One possible explanation for this observation is deficiencies in pain modulation systems such as Diffuse Noxious Inhibitory Control (DNIC). In a few studies that used brief stimuli, chronic pain patients demonstrate reduced DNIC. The purpose of this study was to compare sensitivity to prolonged heat pain and the efficacy of DNIC in controls to IBS and TMD patients. Heat pain (experimental stimulus; 44.0-49.0 degrees C), which was applied to left palm,

The effect of hyperthermia on the early- and late-appearing mouse foot reactions and on radiation carcinogenesis: Part II. Effect on radiation carcinogenesis (thermal enhancement and oxygen enhancement).

The effect of hyperthermia on radiation carcinogenesis was investigated in the C3Hf/Sed mouse foot. The foot was irradiated under hypoxic conditions, in air, or under hyperbaric oxygen conditions to evaluate the oxygen effect. Hyperthermia at 43.5 degrees C for 45 min was given by immersing the animal foot into a constant temperature water bath. A malignant tumor in the irradiated foot was first observed congruent to 250 days after irradiation. Tumors developed in the irradiated area until day 850. RCD50, or 50% radiation carcinogenesis dose was the endpoint and was calculated based on the tum

The response to the trench diseases in World War I: a triumph of public health science.

The recent 90-year anniversary of the Battle of the Somme presents an opportunity to examine the public health response to the trench diseases, new conditions which arose in the trenches of World War I. Throughout history, there have been two views of epidemic disease: the configurationist and contagionist perspectives. Most doctors responding to the trench diseases, 'contingent-contagionists', combined these two conceptions of disease. Because of the difficulty of finding a causative organism and the absence of effective treatment, the majority view became that these conditions were a product

Rapid cooling techniques in joggers experiencing heat strain.

This study examined subjects that exercised on three occasions in a heated environment (WBGT = 39 degrees C] until they experienced heat strain. Since morbidity and mortality due to heat injury increase with the duration of elevated core temperature, it is important that techniques to lower core temperature be evaluated. Following three exercise sessions, subjects underwent each of three core cooling treatments in random order: 1) Torso immersion in cool water, 2) Hands and feet immersion in cool water, and 3) Sit-in-shade with a 1.5mph breeze provided. Subjects (n=5) consistently reached peak

Walking from thought.

Online analysis and classification of single electroencephalogram (EEG) trials during motor imagery were used for navigation in the virtual environment (VE). The EEG was recorded bipolarly with electrode placement over the hand and foot representation areas. The aim of the study was to demonstrate for the first time that it is possible to move through a virtual street without muscular activity when the participant only imagines feet movements. This is achieved by exploiting a brain-computer interface (BCI) which transforms thought-modulated EEG signals into an output signal that controls event

Growth of the body in early fetuses studied by multivariate analysis.

The growth of the body was studied in 30 human fetuses ranged from 10 to 22 weeks of gestation. The fetuses were fixed by immersion in 4 percent formaldehyde and the following dimensions were studied: a) lengths: arm, forearm, hand, thigh, leg, foot and crown-rump (sitting height), b) perimeters: head, thorax and abdomen. A covariance matrix was calculated from natural logarithms of all measurements. The relative growth of these measurement was computed by multivariate allometry using a principal components analysis (PCA). All characters were positively correlated with the first principal comp

Frostbite secondary to antimycobacterial-induced peripheral neuropathy: a case report.

This case report describes a unique scenario in which antimycobacterial-induced peripheral neuropathy (PN) culminates in severe bilateral foot frostbite. Drug-induced peripheral neuropathy (DIPN) is explored in the context of TB treatment, highlighting the role of medications such as isoniazid (INH) and their potential to cause PN. The report highlights the importance of identifying PN in patients undergoing antimycobacterial treatment. Early recognition and proper management of PN is crucial to prevent complications. Notably, the report advocates for patient education regarding medication sid

Peripheral responses to cold: case studies from an Arctic expedition.

OBJECTIVE: An Arctic expedition provided an opportunity to examine the interaction between cold injury and peripheral acclimatization. The conditions were similar to those during which acclimatization has been demonstrated, yet they were also conducive to development of peripheral cold injury. METHODS: Extremity digit temperatures were measured during 30-minute peripheral cold-water (4 degrees C) immersion (CWI) in 2 explorers (R.G. and T.L.) before and after a 109-day Arctic ski trek (average T(air) = -21 degrees C). This self-supported trek involved carrying heavy backpacks (up to 45 kg) an

Water adherence factors for human skin.

On incidental dermal exposure to chemicals in water, a key exposure factor is the amount of water adhering to skin. Although soil adherence factors have been developed for risk assessment, measurements of water adherence on human skin have not been described. In the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) dermal risk assessment guidance, dermal dose from environmental exposures is based upon the flux rate across the skin, which assumes that an unlimited amount of chemical is available for absorption. This assumption is applicable to certain exposure scenarios such as swimming and bathing. Ho
