The egg-laying hormone (ELH) is a polypeptide of known structure, which is synthesized and released by the neurosecretory bag cells in the abdominal ganglion of the mollusc, Aplysia californica. We have used immunohistochemical procedures to reveal organized groups of specific cells and fiber tracts within the pleural and cerebral ganglia in adult Aplysia which are immunopositive when reacted with antibodies generated against ELH. A 76-year-old man presented with back discomfort and jaundice. CT and MRI of the abdomen revealed a mass in the common bile duct. Cytology of the bile juice obtained by percutaneous transhepatic cholangio-drainage revealed class V. The patient underwent laparotomy and pancreatoduodenectomy. Pathology showed a carcinoid tumor of the biliary tract, 14 x 10 mm in size. Grimelius staining demonstrated the presence of argyrophilic granules. On immunochemistry, the tumor stained positive for chromogranin A and synaptophysin. He had two liver metastases 8 months postoperatively.

The development of vasoactive intestinal peptide, substance P and calcitonin gene-related peptide in parotid, submandibular and sublingual glands of the male rat was followed by immunochemistry and immunocytochemistry. The total amounts of these peptides increased in surges during the first 8 weeks of the animal's life; one within 2-4 weeks and the other beginning 1-2 weeks later. Nerve fibres containing these peptides were present at birth showing a pattern of distribution similar to that in adults. During the first 4 weeks the nerve fibres increased in number.

The term gestational trophoblastic tumours covers hydatidiform moles, invasive moles and choriocarcinomas. These are rare diseases remarkable for their high chemosensitivity. The current objective is to cure all patients while preserving their potential for child bearing. Several studies have elicited prognostic factors, so that treatment can be adjusted to each individual patient. Advances in immunochemistry have led to the discovery of a highly reliable marker (HCG and beta-HCG) which has proved valuable to confirm the diagnosis and to follow the patients during and after treatment.

The authors report the case of a 24 years-old man who had a first tumor in the right maxilla diagnosed as Ewing's sarcoma and treated by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. A second tumor appeared in the skull vault twenty seven months later. The histological diagnosis after removal of the lesion was IgG Lambda plasmacytoma. p53 mutation are currently recognized as the commonest genetic event in human tumors. In this paper are studied, through immunochemistry, the p53 protein expression of 25 carriers from squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx and hypopharynx as well in the non tumoral mucosa of the larynx removed and corresponding metastases. Because of the great overexpression of this protein among tumors and its metastases, aside with the low expression in normal far-off mucous membranes of the studied growths, the AA. draw out the conclusion that p53 mutation is a late event by neck and head oncogenesis.

A primary leiomyosarcoma of the os calcis, occurring in a 68-year-old woman and treated by below-the-knee amputation, is reported. The diagnosis was confirmed by electron microscopy, and supported by immunochemistry. These techniques can be performed in a primary spindle cell osseous neoplasm to distinguish leiomyosarcoma from fibrosarcoma and malignant fibrous histiocytoma. Fragments of fungi in a granuloma were demonstrated in lung biopsy specimens of two patients with farmer's lung by using an avidin-biotin-complex method with non-conjugated rabbit antiserum to Aspergillus fumigatus. Our findings suggest that the type IV or cell-mediated immunity at least partly explains the pathogenesis of farmer's lung.
