Added Sugar Intake from Infant Formula and Complementary Foods: A Longitudinal Investigation and Implications for Infant Weight Gain.

BACKGROUND: Infant formula contains added sugar, although national recommendations are that added sugar should be avoided for infants. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to estimate average daily added sugar intake from formula and complementary foods and examine associations between added sugar intake from formula and complementary foods and weight status among infants in low-income households. METHODS: Between August 2019 and November 2021, mother-infant dyads were recruited from a pediatric clinic primarily serving Medicaid recipients, regardless of feeding type. 24-h feeding recalls were conduc

Impact of food supplementation during lactation on infant breast-milk intake and on the proportion of infants exclusively breast-fed.

To evaluate whether milk production can be improved by increasing food intake, a randomized, double-blind, supplementation trial was completed among 102 lactating Guatemalan women. The subjects were undernourished, as indicated by their low values for calf circumference (CC) and the small size of their infants at birth. A high-energy (2.14 MJ/d, HES) and a low-energy (0.50 MJ/d, LES) supplement were distributed 6 d/wk from wk 5 to 25 of lactation. Data were evaluated using repeated-measures analysis of variance on the increments from initial values for each outcome variable with one-tailed tes

A case of acquired syphilis in an infant through mouth-to-mouth transmission of prechewed food.

BACKGROUND: Patients with syphilis are the only source of infection, which can be transmitted through sexual contact and mother-to-child and blood transmission, and rarely through contaminants. The clinical manifestations of syphilis are complex and variable, and can be easily misdiagnosed. This article reports a case of syphilis in a child with "psoriasis"-like lesions who was fed pre-chewed food. CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-month-old girl presented with mung bean to peanut-sized erythema and papules scattered on both lower limbs and perianal area; some of the erythema was covered with scales,

Bacteremia Caused by Kalamiella piersonii Found in an Infant During the Course of Gastrointestinal Food Allergy.

Kalamiella piersonii is rare pathogen, and its pathogenicity to humans has been unknown. We describe an infant with bacteremia caused by Kalamiella piersonii. The patient was a 2-month-old girl presented with diarrhea, poor oral intake, and vomiting. The patient was tentatively diagnosed with acute enterocolitis. After admission, the patient developed a fever and blood culture yielded Gram-negative cocci, first determined to be Pantoea septica by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. However, genetic analysis of 16S rRNA allowed its identification as Kal

The effects of fermented food consumption in pregnancy on neonatal and infant health: An integrative review.

OBJECTIVE: This study was carried out to determine the effects of fermented food in maternal diet during pregnancy on neonatal and infant health. INTRODUCTION: Fermented food consumption positively affects microbiota development. It is widely acknowledged that maternal microbiota is a crucial component in the microbiota formation of the newborn. However, the short-term and long-term effects of fermented food consumption during pregnancy on newborns/infants have not been fully investigated so far. INCLUSION CRITERIA: The study included studies that were randomized controlled, quasi-experiment

Plasma metabolomic profiles associated with infant food allergy with further consideration of other early life factors.

BACKGROUND: Fatty acids have been implicated in early life immune development. Food allergy provides a clear phenotype of early allergic disease. Fish oil and vitamin D have immune-modulating properties. We aimed to identify the metabolomic profile of (i) infant food allergy and (ii) factors linked to food allergy in past studies such as fish oil supplementation and serum 25OHD3 levels in early life. METHODS: NMR was used to quantify 73 metabolites in plasma of 1 year old infants from the Barwon Infant Study (n=485). Logistic regression models were used to examine associations between infant …

Milk and infant plasma hormone concentrations predict sweet and fat taste acceptance and later food intake.

Early-life exposure to metabolic hormones may influence the development of taste acceptance and subsequent intake of hyperpalatable foods (HPF) in infants, but evidence integrating hormonal, behavioral, and dietary data in humans is limited. Therefore, our objective was to determine whether concentrations of insulin, leptin, cortisol, and liver-expressed antimicrobial peptide 2 (LEAP2) in human milk and infant plasma at 6 months predict infant sweet and fat taste acceptance and HPF intake later in infancy. In this prospective cohort study, human milk and infant plasma were collected at 6 month

Pre-chewing of infant food - expectations towards an old, traditional feeding habit for potential allergy prevention.

Premastication is a traditional feeding method whereby solids are pre-chewed by the mother or sometimes by other relatives and then given to the infant along with the oral microbiota. The aim of this study was to assess if premastication is known or performed among the German population as well as to evaluate the expectations regarding this feeding method, particularly in the context of allergy prevention. Two surveys about premastication were conducted. For the survey of the "general population (GP)" 10,000 participants (18 to 65 years old) were randomly selected from the official population

Early introduction of complementary foods among infants exposed to maternal incarceration in utero.

BackgroundEarly nutrition is critical to later health outcomes. Infants exposed to maternal incarceration are a marginalized population and may be at elevated risk for suboptimal feeding.AimTo assess adherence to recommended timing of complementary food introduction among infants exposed to maternal incarceration in utero.MethodsWe analyzed data from 69 infants and caregivers in Georgia. Formerly incarcerated mothers (n = 17) and nonmaternal caregivers (n = 52) reported timing of complementary food introduction. Regression analyses assessed associations with independent variables, including po

Quality of life in families of infants and toddlers with food allergies: A mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Food allergies (FA) are a growing public health concern affecting family wellbeing. While previous research has focused largely on school-aged children, limited evidence exists regarding families of infants and toddlers. This study examined the quality of life (QoL) in families with children aged up to 3 years with food allergies in Cyprus and sought to identify modifiable factors that may inform strategies to improve family QoL. METHODS: A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was used. Quantitative data were collected from mothers of 100 children with FA diagnosis by eithe

Low serum adrenic acid levels in infants and subsequent food-induced anaphylaxis.

BACKGROUND: The dietary fat hypothesis links increases in allergic diseases to reduced consumption of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids from fish, for example, eicosapentaenoic acid, and increased intake of n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids from vegetable oils, for example, arachidonic acid. OBJECTIVE: Building upon the "fat hypothesis," we sought to investigate the association between 24 types of serum fatty acid levels in infants and the risk of subsequent food-induced anaphylaxis (FIA) by age 2 years as the primary outcome. METHODS: This study was conducted as a prespecified supplemental anal

Assessment of intracellular zinc levels in infants with food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis.

BACKGROUND: Food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis (FPIAP) is characterized by bloody stools in well-appearing infants. Zinc is a micronutrient that plays a crucial role in immune modulation and is essential for cellular function during immune response. Although there are studies on the assessment of intracellular zinc levels in allergic diseases, no data is available on erythrocyte zinc levels of patients with FPIAP. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the erythrocyte zinc levels of children with allergic proctocolitis and compare zinc levels with clinical and demographic characterist

Practice of feeding premasticated food to infants: a potential risk factor for HIV transmission.

OBJECTIVES: Although some caregivers are known to premasticate food for infants, usually during the weaning period, HIV transmission has not been linked to this practice. We describe 3 cases of HIV transmission in the United States possibly related to this practice. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Three cases of HIV infection were diagnosed in children at ages 9, 15, and 39 months; clinical symptomatology prompted the testing. A thorough investigation to rule out alternative modes of transmission was conducted. In addition, phylogenetic comparisons of virus from cases and suspected sources were perform
