Infectious mononucleosis(IM) is a primary Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)infection. Since heterophil antibody negative IM is common in Japan, EBV antibody(presence of VCA-IgM or anti-EA, high titers of VCA-IgG in the absence of anti-EBNA) is useful for serologic diagnosis of IM. Although EBV causes the continuous growth of lymphoid cell lines in vitro and causes malignant diseases such as Burkitt lymphoma, nasopharyngeal cancer and malignant lymphomas in immunocompromised patients, IM is usually self-limiting, and after primary infection EBV persists in B cells throughout life without producing sympt…

OBJECTIVE: To present updated aspects of the Infectious Mononucleosis caused by the Epstein-Barr Virus.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Research of bibliographic references through the Medline and direct research of selected papers.
RESULTS: A concise approach to some aspects related to the epidemiology of the virus, namely the two types that are presently known,EBVtypeAandEBVtype B, and some differences that they present. It was possible to establish a relationship between what one sees in the clinical picture and the immunological changes that occur at the same time. The author also describes the p…

EBV-induced IM is a generally self-limited infection characterized by fever, pharyngitis, and adenopathy. Management consists of basic supportive measures and treatment of streptococcal pharyngitis when present. Corticosteroids may be considered for individuals who exhibit evidence of significant upper airway obstruction. To date there is little evidence to support the use of antiviral agents in immunocompetent patients. Complications of IM may arise, which can be life-threatening, but these are relatively rare.

Infectious mononucleosis is an acute, self-limiting, nonneoplastic lymphoreticular proliferative disorder characterized by peripheral lymphocytosis and circulating atypical lymphocytes. Epstein-Barr virus is the causative agent in 90% of cases. Highest incidence is in the 15- to 25-year-old age-group, with 1% to 3% of all college students in the United States affected each year. Clinical manifestations vary according to age at presentation. Incubation period is 4 to 7 weeks. Diagnosis is primarily made with the monospot test but may include throat culture and complete blood count with differen…
