The distribution of the synaptic vesicle protein synaptoporin was investigated by immunofluorescence in the central auditory system of the mouse brainstem. Synaptoporin immunostaining displayed region-specific differences. High and moderate accumulations of were seen in the superficial layer of the dorsal cochlear nucleus, dorsal and external regions of the inferior colliculus, the medial and dorsal divisions of the medial geniculate body and in periolivary regions of the superior olivary complex (SOC). Low or absent labeling was observed in the more central parts of these structures such as t

For deaf patients cochlear implants (CIs) can restore substantial amounts of functional hearing. However, binaural hearing, and in particular, the perception of interaural time differences (ITDs) with current CIs has been found to be notoriously poor, especially in the event of early hearing loss. One popular hypothesis for these deficits posits that a lack of early binaural experience may be a principal cause of poor ITD perception in pre-lingually deaf CI patients. This is supported by previous electrophysiological studies done in neonatally deafened, bilateral CI-stimulated animals showing

OBJECTIVES: Echolocating bats show remarkable specialization which is related to analysis of echoes of biosonars in subcortical auditory brainstem pathways. The inferior colliculus (IC) receives inputs from all lower brainstem auditory nuclei, i.e., cochlear nuclei, nuclei of the lateral lemniscus, and superior olivary complex, and create de novo responses to sound, which is considered crucial for echolocation. Inside the central nucleus of the IC (ICC), small domains which receive specific combination of extrinsic inputs are the basis of integration of sound information. In addition to extrin

Projections to the inferior colliculus (IC) from the lateral and medial superior olivary nuclei (LSO and MSO) were studied in the gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) with neuroanatomical tract-tracing methods. The terminal fields of projecting axons were labeled via anterograde transport of biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) and were localized on series of horizontal sections through the IC. In addition, to make the results easier to visualize in three dimensions and to facilitate comparisons among cases, the data were also reconstructed into the transverse plane. The results show that the terminal f

This study aims to investigate corticofugal modulation on spontaneous activities of the external nucleus of the inferior colliculus (ICx) in a salicylate acid (SA) induced tinnitus rat model by the stimulation of the primary auditory cortex (AI). Extracellular recording techniques and stereotaxic method were used. The spontaneous activities of a single unit were recorded from the left ICx after electrical stimulation was given to the left AI of the rats duplicated as acute SA models. The average rate of spontaneous discharge and the interspike interval histogram of spontaneous activities were

Cell-free preparations from superior and inferior colliculi of very young rats (1-3 days old) contained adenylate cyclase systems which were highly responsive to serotonin. The response to serotonin declined markedly during early development and was very low at maturity. Adenylate cyclase activity in the 10,000 times g particulate fraction from colliculi of newborn rats was significantly stimulated by 0.05 muM serotonin. Half-maximal activation was produced with less than 1 muM serotonin. Maximal stimulation of collicular adenylate cyclase was about 80% above basal enzyme activity and occurred…

Within the central auditory pathway, the inferior colliculus (IC) is a critical integration center for ascending sound information. Although IC neurons have well-characterized receptive fields for individual sound features such as sound frequency, intensity, and location, growing evidence suggests that some neurons also use multiplexing to encode sound feature combinations. Here, we performed in vivo juxtacellular recordings in awake, head-fixed mice to examine how individual IC neurons and neuronal populations encode the speed, direction, and frequency range of frequency-modulated (FM) sweeps

OBJECTIVE: To use functional magnetic resonance imaging to map the auditory cortical fields that are activated, or nonreactive, to sounds in patient M.L., who has auditory agnosia caused by trauma to the inferior colliculi.
BACKGROUND: The patient cannot recognize speech or environmental sounds. Her discrimination is greatly facilitated by context and visibility of the speaker's facial movements, and under forced-choice testing. Her auditory temporal resolution is severely compromised. Her discrimination is more impaired for words differing in voice onset time than place of articulation. Word…

This study examines the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (DNLL) and its afferent and efferent connections. In Nissl-stained material, DNLL has three parts: dorsal, ventral, and lateral. Although each part contains neurons with similar Nissl patterns, the subdivisions may be distinguished by the size, shape, and orientation of the cells. The lateral DNLL contains a mixture of DNLL neurons and cells from the sagulum. Afferent connections to DNLL were investigated with anterograde axonal transport techniques. Bilateral inputs to DNLL arise from the anteroventral cochlear nucleus and latera

Genetic abnormalities affecting glutamate receptors are central to excitatory overload-driven neuronal mechanisms that culminate in seizures, making them pivotal targets in epilepsy research. Increasingly used to advance this field, the genetically audiogenic seizure hamster from Salamanca (GASH/Sal) exhibits generalized seizures triggered by high-intensity acoustic stimulation and harbors significant genetic variants recently identified through whole-exome sequencing. Here, we addressed the influence of the missense single-nucleotide polymorphism (C9586732T, p.His289Tyr) in the glutamate rece

Mice and rats have been found almost equally susceptible to (R, S)-alpha-chlorohydrin neurotoxicity, but in rats the distribution of lesions in the neuraxis is less widespread. The topography of the brain lesions shows an incomplete relationship to the regional hierarchy of local glucose utilization in rats and local cerebral blood flow in mice, suggesting that other, unknown, factors also play roles in determining this. Evidence suggesting progressive tonotopic selective vulnerability was found in inferior colliculi in rats given five doses of 50 mg/kg/day. Distinct differences in the pattern…

The inferior colliculus (IC) has traditionally been regarded as an important relay in the auditory pathway, primarily involved in relaying auditory information from the brainstem to the thalamus. However, this study uncovers the multifaceted role of the IC in bridging auditory processing, sensory prediction, and reward prediction. Through extracellular recordings in monkeys engaged in a sound duration-based deviation detection task, we observed a 'climbing effect' in neuronal firing rates, indicative of an enhanced response over sound sequences linked to sensory prediction rather than reward a

Auditory dysfunction, including hypersensitivity and tinnitus, is a common symptom of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Prenatal exposure to the antiseizure medication valproic acid (VPA) significantly increases the risk of ASD in humans and similar exposure is utilized as an animal model of ASD in rodents. Animals exposed to VPA in utero have abnormal activity in their auditory cortex in response to sounds, fewer neurons, abnormal neuronal morphology, reduced expression of calcium-binding proteins, and reduced ascending projections to the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus. Unfortunatel

High-pressure blast shockwaves are known to cause tinnitus. Imaging studies have shown that blast-induced tinnitus may result from damage to the inner ear structures and/or direct brain impact that trigger a cascade of neuroplastic changes in both auditory and non-auditory centers. Nevertheless, information is still lacking on the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying blast-induced tinnitus. In this study, we used a rat model and investigated the effect of blast-induced tinnitus on spontaneous activity in the inferior colliculus (IC) at one day, one month, and three months following blast.

We examined the effects of nembutal anesthesia on the amplitude of the auditory steady-state response (ASSR) in the inferior colliculus (IC) and auditory cortex (AC) of the chinchilla. Tungsten electrodes were chronically implanted following anesthesia with ketamine/acepromazine. After a recovery period, the chinchillas were placed in a passive restraining device and put in a sound-attenuating booth. Recordings were made from the right IC and AC simultaneously, while a two-tone stimulus was presented to the left ear. The stimuli consisted of two equal-level tones (F1 and F2) that were mixed ac
