Intra-articular Hip Injections Prior to Total Hip Arthroplasty: Infection and Cost-Related Associations.

Intra-articular injections prior to total hip arthroplasty (THA) have been associated with postoperative infections. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a temporal relationship exists between hip injections prior to THA and infection. Specifically, we asked (1) Do patients who receive hip injections within 3 months of THA have a higher incidence of prosthetic joint infections (PJIs) or surgical site infections (SSIs)? and (2) Do these patients incur higher 90-day costs? Patients with hip injections prior to THA were identified using a national database from 2010 to 2019. Three l

Predictors of response to intra-articular steroid injections in knee osteoarthritis--a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: IA steroid injections (IASIs) have been shown to relieve pain in knee OA and are widely used in clinical practice. There is, however, evidence of some variation in response. Knowledge of predictors of response could aid in the selection of patients for this therapy. The aim of this systematic review was to determine factors associated with response to IASI in knee OA. METHODS: Medline, Embase, AMED, CINAHL, Web of Science and Cochrane Central Registers for Controlled Trials up to January 2012 were searched with additional hand searches of relevant articles. Studies included were th

Local intra-articular injection of rapamycin delays articular cartilage degeneration in a murine model of osteoarthritis.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies have revealed that rapamycin activates autophagy in human chondrocytes preventing the development of osteoarthritis (OA) like changes in vitro, while the systemic injection of rapamycin reduces the severity of experimental osteoarthritis in a murine model of OA in vivo. Since the systemic use of rapamycin is associated with numerous side effects, the goal of the current study was to examine the beneficial effect of local intra-articular injection of rapamycin in a murine model of OA and to elucidate the mechanism of action of rapamycin on articular cartilage. The efficacy of intra-articular hyaluronan injection after the microfracture technique for the treatment of articular cartilage lesions.

BACKGROUND: Although the exact mechanism of action has yet to be elucidated, recent animal studies have demonstrated chondroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties of hyaluronic acid viscosupplementation. HYPOTHESIS: Intra-articular hyaluronic acid after microfracture improves the quality of the repair leading to a more hyaline-like repair tissue with better defect fill and adjacent area integration. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: Full-thickness cartilage defects were created in the weightbearing area of the medial femoral condyle in 36 female New Zealand White rabb

Long-term efficacy and safety of intra-articular corticosteroid injections in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

INTRODUCTION: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a highly prevalent condition worldwide, resulting in a significant symptom burden and diminished quality of life. Mainstays of KOA management include weight loss, exercise, physical activity, and simple analgesia, with joint replacement as a last resort. Intra-articular injections, especially corticosteroids, have been increasingly used to provide symptomatic relief when simple analgesia fails. However, the efficacy and safety of intra-articular corticosteroid injections (IACS) remain poorly established. AREAS COVERED: This narrative literature revie

Computed tomography, ultrasound and fluoroscopy guidance in intra-articular sacroiliac joint injections: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Fluoroscopy and Computed Tomography (CT) are the reference standards for verifying needle placement when undertaking an Intra-articular (IA) Sacroiliac Joint (SIJ) injection. The use of Ultrasound (US) for performing SIJ injections has become a focus in recent years, as it eliminates radiation exposure. This systematic review aimed to compare the efficacy of US, CT, and Fluoroscopy when undertaking SIJ injections. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted using the databases Embase, PubMed, CINAHL, and Scopus. The included studies were published in English (January 2003 to Marc

A Case of Bilateral Steroid Arthropathy of the Hip Following Repeated Intra-articular Steroid Injections.

INTRODUCTION: Steroid arthropathy is a relatively rare but serious complication of intra-articular corticosteroid injections, characterized by rapid joint destruction. Although intra-articular steroid injections are widely used for short-term pain relief in osteoarthritis, their potential risks remain underrecognized. We report a rare case of bilateral steroid arthropathy of the hip following repeated intra-articular steroid injections. CASE REPORT: A 60-year-old woman with bilateral hip osteoarthritis received multiple steroid injections into both hip joints over a 4-month period. Although t

Cryostick pre-cooling reduces pain during intra-articular knee injections: a randomized, contralateral-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Intra-articular knee injections are essential for osteoarthritis management but often limited by "needle phobia" and procedural pain. The cryostick, a high-thermal-conductivity device, is a potential analgesic; however, evidence regarding its efficacy in reducing pain and bleeding is limited. The purpose of the study was to evaluate whether cryostick application reduces procedural pain, reduces bleeding, and improves patient satisfaction during intra-articular knee injections. METHODS: This randomized, contralateral-controlled trial included 50 patients (100 knees) with bilateral
