CT Ventriculography for diagnosis of occult ventricular cysticerci.

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis is the most common parasitic infection of the central nervous system (CNS). Intraventricular lesions are seen in 7-20% of CNS cysticercosis. Intraventricular lesions can be missed by computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as they are typically isodense/isointense to the cerebrospinal fluid. We present our experience with CT ventriculography to visualize occult cysts. CASE DESCRIPTION: Two patients presented with hydrocephalus and suspected neurocysticercosis were evaluated with CT and MRI with and without contrast failing to reveal intrave

[The behavioral characteristics of rats induced by partial degeneration of the hippocampal cholinergic neurons].

The effects of intraventricular administration of ethylcholine aziridinium ion (AF64A) were studied in male Wistar rats. Bilateral injections of AF64A (3 nm/3 mcl) reduced the reactions to biological alarm signal and produced a decrease in the open-field activity 3 weeks after this lesion. The lesioned rats also displayed deficit in retention of a passive avoidance task.

Effects of aging on hydrocephalus after intraventricular hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Hydrocephalus is a common and major complication that affects outcome after intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). While aging impacts the occurrence of hydrocephalus in patients with IVH this and the underlying mechanisms have received little attention. The present investigation, therefore, studied the impact of aging on hydrocephalus after IVH in a rat model. METHODS: Young and aged (3 and 18 months old, respectively) male Fischer 344 rats had an intraventricular injection of 200 μl autologous blood or saline. Ventricular volume was estimated using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI),

Effect of naloxone on physostigmine-induced pressor response in adrenalectomized rats.

Physostigmine-induced pressor response was studied in adrenalectomized rats. The increase in mean arterial blood pressure elicited by intravenous administration of physostigmine was not altered by adrenalectomy or sham-operation. The pressor response to intracerebroventricular administration of physostigmine was found to be partially inhibited in both acutely adrenalectomized and sham-operated rats, but not in those adrenalectomized 24 h earlier. This inhibition was completely prevented by naloxone pretreatment. The results suggest that endogenous opioid peptide release induced by surgical str

Antagonism of prostaglandin E1 and E2 fever by catecholamines.

Antagonism of PGE1 and PGE2 fever by catecholamines in adult fowls was studied by infusing these substances into the brain. PGE1 and PGE2, given into the third cerebral ventricle or into the hypothalamus, produced an immediate, intense and long-lasting increase in body temperature. Noradrenaline and alpha-methylnoradrenaline infused into the hypothalamus or into the third cerebral ventricle during the fever peak were able to antagonize it and to revert the hyperthermic effect into an hypothermic effect. The possible modes of action of PG's and relations with catecholaminergic neurons in the hy

Differences in endogenous pyrogen fevers induced by iv and icv routes in rabbits.

We have compared the characteristics of fevers produced by endogenous pyrogen administered by the intravenous (iv) and by the intracerebroventricular (icv) routes in conscious rabbits. Fevers induced by the intracerebroventricular route have a longer latency to onset, a less steep rise in body temperature, and a longer time to peak elevation in body temperature than do fevers induced by the intravenous route. Furthermore, a dose of indomethacin (2 mg/kg) administered intravenously, which is effective in markedly attenuating fevers produced by the intravenous route, was completely without effec

Antagonism by theophylline of respiratory inhibition induced by adenosine.

The effects on respiration of an analogue of adenosine, L-2-N6-(phenylisopropyl)adenosine (PIA), and of the methylxanthine, theophylline, were determined in 19 vagotomized glomectomized cats whose end-tidal PCO2 was kept constant by means of a servo-controlled ventilator. Integrated phrenic nerve activity was used to represent respiratory output. Our results show that PIA, whether given systemically or into the third cerebral ventricle, depressed respiration. Systemically administered theophylline stimulated respiration. Theophylline given intravenously, or into the third ventricle not only re

Antinociceptive activity and toxicity of meperidine and normeperidine in mice.

The antinociceptive (radiant heat tail-flick), convulsant and lethal activities of meperidine (MEP) and normeperidine (NMEP) were studied after s.c. and i.c.v. administration to mice. Both compounds s.c. exhibited naloxone-reversible antinociceptive activity. MEP (ED50 = 23 mg/kg) was 2.5 to 5 times more potent, on a molar basis, than NMEP (ED50 = 72 mg/kg). NMEP was a convulsant [ED50 = 105 mg/kg (s.c.) and 64 micrograms/mouse (i.c.v.)], with a small therapeutic index relative to analgesia whose activity was potentiated by naloxone and antagonized by pentobarbital or morphine, s.c. Behavioural, electrocortical and body temperature effects of cholera toxin.

In young chicks intrahypothalamic infusion of cholera toxin produced a dramatic and dose-dependent increase in motor activity. Similar effects were also obtained in adult fowls after injection of cholera toxin into the third cerebral ventricle, the hypothalamus or the paleostriatum augmentatum. Electrocortical changes consisted of a slight desynchronization during the hypermotor activity and were preceded, when the highest intraventricular doses were used, by a short period of slower frequency and higher amplitude potentials. Intraventricular and intrahypothalamic but not intrastriatal injecti

Avian cerebrospinal fluid: repeated collection and testing for a possible role in food intake regulation.

The objective of this study was to determine if a factor(s) involved in the regulation of food intake exists in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of the domestic fowl. A technique was developed that allows blood-free CSF samples to be collected repeatedly from the cisterna magna for up to 6 weeks. Using this technique, CSF was collected from free-feeding and 24-hour fasted broiler cockerels and injected into the lateral cerebral ventricle of 8-week old Leghorn cockerels and 4-week old broiler cockerels. The free-feeding birds received 10 microliter intracerebroventricular injections of CSF either

[Ventriculography with methylglucamine iocarmate (Dimer-X). Experimental and Clinical study (author's transl)].

Evaluation of 60% solution of Methylglucamine iocarmate (Dimer-X) for ventriculography in animal experiment and clinical cases was reported. The experimental result was compared with that of Conray 60 and Angiografin, which was reported in our previous papers. In seven intraventricular injections of 2.0 ml, administered to 6 dogs, convulsion was observed on three occasions, facial myoclonus on 1 and no symptoms on the remaining three. However, in 7 intraventricular injections of 1.5 ml for 6 dogs, 6 were symptom-free and only residual one showed convulsion. And no dog died in either experiment

Mechanical injury and blood are drivers of spatial memory deficits after rapid intraventricular hemorrhage.

Aneurysmal intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) survivors may recover with significant deficits in learning and memory. The goal of this study was to investigate the mechanism of memory decline after intraventricular aneurysm rupture. We developed an aneurysmal IVH rat model by injecting autologous, arterial blood over the period of two minutes into the right lateral ventricle. We also evaluated the effects of a volume-matched artificial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) control, thrombin and the mode of delivery (pulsed hand injection versus continuous pump infusion). We performed magnetic resonance bra

Changes in body temperature produced by cholinomimetic substances injected into the cerebral ventricles of unanaesthetized cats.

1. The effects on body temperature of a number of substances injected into a lateral cerebral ventricle were examined in the unanaesthetized cat.2. Nicotine (50 and 100 mug) caused a fall in body temperature ranging from 0.95-2.1 degrees C associated with skin vasodilatation, tachypnoea and panting. These responses were prevented by the intraventricular injection of hexamethonium or mecamylamine, but not of atropine or phentolamine.3. Carbachol (5 mug) caused a rise in temperature associated with skin vasoconstriction, piloerection and severe shivering. These effects were prevented by the intr

Intracerebroventricular Administration of Gangliosides for In Vivo Functional Studies in Mice.

Levels of gangliosides are reduced in several neurological conditions, and their restoration has shown therapeutic potential in animal models of Huntington's disease and Parkinson's disease. However, the full range of functions of gangliosides in the brain, along with their molecular targets and mechanisms of action following exogenous administration, remains ill-defined. Due to their poor blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability, gangliosides face significant challenges when delivered through non-invasive routes. Direct intracerebroventricular (ICV) infusion circumvents this issue by bypassing

A multicenter, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled phase III study of Clot Lysis Evaluation of Accelerated Resolution of Intraventricular Hemorrhage (CLEAR III).

BACKGROUND: In adults, intraventricular thrombolytic therapy with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) facilitates resolution of intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH), reduces intracranial pressure, decreases duration of cerebrospinal fluid diversion, and may ameliorate direct neural injury. We hypothesize that patients with small parenchymal haematoma volumes (<30 cc) and relatively large IVH causing acute obstructive hydrocephalus would have improved clinical outcomes when given injections of low-dose rtPA to accelerate lysis and evacuation of IVH compared with placebo. METHODS: The

Experiences with carbenicillin in the treatment of septicaemia and meningitis.

Experiences in the use of carbenicillin, a new penicillin active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other Gram-negative bacteria in the treatment of septicaemia and meningitis are described. Blood levels of carbenicillin in excess of the levels required to inhibit the infecting organisms were obtained using intravenous infusions of large doses together with probenecid by mouth. High cerebrospinal fluid levels of carbenicillin were ensured in the meningitis patients with daily intrathecal or intraventricular injections. Carbenicillin undoubtedly controlled the course of Ps. aeruginosa septicaem

Delivery of therapeutic agents through intracerebroventricular (ICV) and intravenous (IV) injection in mice.

Despite the protective role that blood brain barrier plays in shielding the brain, it limits the access to the central nervous system (CNS) which most often results in failure of potential therapeutics designed for neurodegenerative disorders. Neurodegenerative diseases such as Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), in which the lower motor neurons are affected, can benefit greatly from introducing the therapeutic agents into the CNS. The purpose of this video is to demonstrate two different injection paradigms to deliver therapeutic materials into neonatal mice soon after birth. One of these methods
