OBJECTIVES: To compare systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients with and without anti-PM-Scl antibody.
METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 76 anti-PM-Scl antibody positive SSc patients and 2349 anti-PMScl negative SSc patients first evaluated during 1980-2004. To evaluate clinical and immunological parameters, interleukin (IL)-15 production and outcome of patients with visceral leishmaniasis (VL), including HIV positive patients, we analyzed 48 cases of VL. Clinical manifestations and response to therapy were similar in VL/HIV- and VL/HIV+ patients. However, relapses were more frequent in patients with HIV infection. Among several monoclonal antibodies (moABs) directed against human interleukin 2 (IL-2), the 15-2 moAB raised in our laboratory against unglycosylated recombinant IL-2 (produced in Escherichia coli) cross-reacted with a human skin epitope.
