Quantitative evaluation of neurons in the mucosal plexus of adult human intestines.

The consequence of presence versus absence of mucosal neurons is not consistently assessed. Here, we addressed two questions. First, based on resected gut specimens of 65 patients/body donors suffering from different diseases, counts of mucosal neurons per mm(2) were analysed with respect to age, gender and region. Second, we evaluated resected megacolonic specimens of four patients suffering from chronic Chagas' disease. Mucosal wholemounts were triple-stained for calretinin (CALR), peripherin (PER) and human neuronal protein Hu C/D (HU). Counts revealed no clear correlation between the prese

Immunisation of mice with fractions derived from the intestines of Dirofilaria immitis.

Antigens that are not normally seen by the host but that are nevertheless, accessible to host immune effector molecules and cells such as the native endoantigens associated with the intestinal epithelium of haematophagous tissue-dwelling parasites, could be potentially useful vaccine antigens. In this study, intestines were dissected from adult Dirofilaria immitis, homogenised, and a 105,000 x g pellet obtained and extracted with Triton X-100. The soluble 105,000 x g supernatant from this extract induced partial protection (51%) against a challenge infection of third stage larvae (L3) implante…

[A recovered case of actinomycosis in the small intestines diagnosed with ultrasonography].

The authors report the history of a patient suffering from abdominal actinomycosis. The correct diagnosis could be established by an ultrasound-guided aspiration sampling from the small-intestinal abscess, following the sonographic localisation of the lesion. The patient recovered by a long-term antibiotic treatment. Related to the case the authors review the relevant literary data of the past few years and point to the value of ultrasonography in the successful management of the disease.

Choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) immunoreactivity in paraffin sections of normal and diseased intestines.

There is increasing interest in localizing nerves in the intestine, especially specific populations of nerves. At present, the usual histochemical marker for cholinergic nerves in tissue sections is acetylcholinesterase activity. However, such techniques are applicable only to frozen sections and have uncertain specificity. Choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) is also present in cholinergic nerves, and we therefore aimed to establish a paraffin section immunocytochemical technique using an anti-ChAT antibody. Monoclonal anti-choline acetyltransferase (1.B3.9B3) and a biotin-streptavidin detection

Rare Run-Over Clinical Case. Evisceration of the Intestines through the Wrist.

BACKGROUND: Deaths resulting from car-pedestrian collisions are frequently encountered in forensic practice. Such accidents often cause exte … lated fragments of intestinal loops were present in the abdominal cavity. Evisceration of the small intestines through the left upper arm and forearm was found. CONCLUSIONS: Run-over accidents involving heavy vehicles are a common cause of fatal injuries. These incidents often result in extensive lacerations, multiple comminated fractures, and severe damage …

Distribution of Antibiotic-Resistant Genes in Intestines of Infants and Influencing Factors.

The objective of this study is to assess the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) in the intestines of infants and the factors affecting their distribution. Breast milk and infant stool samples were collected from nine full-term, healthy mother-infant pairs. The bacterial distribution and various types of ARGs present in the samples were analyzed using metagenomic next-generation sequencing. Over a period spanning from 2 to 240 d after birth, a total of 273 types of ARGs were identified in both infant feces and breast milk, exhibiting a trend of increasing prevalence over time. High…

Fibrosis of the Intestines in Response to Foreign Objects: A Case Report.

Foreign body ingestion of sharp objects can be a striking feature of psychological dysfunction with high morbidity and mortality. While the … frequency allow for an examination of the gradual progression of fibrosis and adhesions within the intestines and abdominal wall, which led to the obstruction and death despite being a protective factor against further perforation. This case was presented at the annual Association of Clinical Scientists meeting (April 2-4, Jacksonville, FL).

Vibrio cholerae O1 Inhabit Intestines and Spleens of Fish in Aquaculture Ponds.

Vibrio cholerae is the causative agent of cholera, an acute diarrheal disease that spreads locally and globally in epidemics and pandemics. Although it was discovered that fish harbor V. cholerae strains in their intestines, most investigations revealed non-toxic V. cholerae serogroups in fish. Due to the rarity of toxigenic V. cholerae serogroups, it is difficult to cultivate these strains from environmental samples. Hence, here we aimed to uncover evidence of the occurrence of toxigenic V. cholerae in the intestines and spleens of various fish species. By using molecular detection tools, we …

Ischemic postconditioning provides protection against ischemia-reperfusion injury in intestines of rats.

In the present study, we investigated the protective role of ischemic postconditioning (IPOST) against intestine ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into sham-operation group (S), I/R group (I/R), ischemic preconditioning group (IPC), ischemic postconditioning group (IPOST). After reperfusion, small intestines were resected for histopathologic evaluations. To evaluate DNA fragmentation, resolving agarose gel electrophoresis was performed. To measure cellular apoptotic rates in intestine tissues, we performed TUNEL staining. To examine lipid peroxida…

Oxidative damage of sulfur dioxide inhalation on stomachs and intestines of mice.

Effects of exposure to sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) on levels of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), levels of reduced glutathione (GSH), and the activities of Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and catalase (CAT) were investigated in stomachs and intestines of Kunming albino mice of both sexes. SO(2) exposure at different concentrations (22, 56, and 112 mg/m(3)) was administered to the animals of SO(2) groups in the exposure chambers for 6 h/day for 7 days, while control groups were exposed to filtered air under the same condition. Our results show that SO(…

[The dynamics of the formation of an infection focus in the intestines].

The problem of the stability of the development of Shigella population in the intestine, depending on the dose of the infective agent, is analyzed. The agent is reproduced in the intestinal mucosa in short cycles, starting with adhesion and followed by penetration, intracellular multiplication and, finally, emission of free bacteria and hulled tops of villi with Shigella intracellular microcolonies. This form of emission maintains high concentration of bacteria and ensures, in case of the adhesion of hulled material, high local concentration provoking the repetition of the cycle. Depending on
