Evaluation of Eravacycline: A Novel Fluorocycline.

Eravacycline (ERV), formerly known as TP-434, is a novel tetracycline (TET) antibiotic that exhibits in vitro activity against various gram-positive, gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic pathogens, including those exhibiting TET-specific acquired resistance mechanisms. Similar to other TETs, it inhibits protein synthesis through binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. Eravacycline was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in August 2018 for the treatment of complicated intraabdominal infections (cIAIs) in adults following the Investigating Gram-Negative Infections Treat…

Chlamydia and Perihepatitis (Fitz-Hugh-Curtis Syndrome) in an 18-Year-Old Male: A Case Report.

Perihepatitis, a complication of pelvic inflammatory disease, is most commonly observed in women. This condition results from inflammation o … leading to a diagnosis of chlamydia and perihepatitis. Recognizing pelvic inflammatory disease-like intraabdominal infections in male patients is crucial, given it has the potential to cause lifelong intraabdominal complications.

[Actinomycosis associated with perforation of jejunum in patient after cholecystectomy--a case report].

Actinomyces is endogenic infection with rare abdominal manifestations. Diagnosis is very difficult and not always taken into account in differential diagnosis. Disease is recurrent and treatment is mostly pharmacologic and takes a long time. The aim of the paper was to present a case of patient operated on acute cholecystitis with intraabdominal actinomycosis. The 66 years old patient 28 days after cholecystectomy appeared to have jejunal perforation in the course of actinomycosis. Patient regarded two interventions due to intraabdominal abscesses. Since last discharge, a year ago, we do not o

[Description of a case of abdominal sepsis due to Desulfovibrio desulfuricans].

Desulfovibrio spp. are strict anaerobes that are ubiquitous in nature. They can reside in the human or animal gastrointestinal tract and, as they are also environmental bacteria, may be present in soil and water. They can persist asymptomatically in the intestine or behave as opportunistic pathogens associated with primary bacteremia and intraabdominal infections. Several Desulfovibrio spp. infections may be underestimated due to their slow growth rate and because many laboratories do not routinely perform anaerobic cultures. Simple tests such as motility detection on a fresh subculture, Gram …

A Rare Case of Intraperitoneal Infection by Kodamaea ohmeri.

BACKGROUND: In April 2024, our hospital confirmed a rare case of intra-abdominal infection by Kodamaea ohmeri. The patient sought medical attention at our hospital after taking painkillers orally for one month, experiencing recurrent abdominal pain for 17 days and worsening for 7 days. In March 2024, the patient received symptomatic treatment with oral analgesics (diclofenac sodium) for arthritis. After 2 weeks of medication, the patient experi-enced upper abdominal colic without any additional triggers. After 3 weeks of medication, the abdominal pain sig-nificantly worsened compared to before

Retroperitoneal and cutaneous necrotizing fasciitis secondary to necrotizing pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal abscesses are rare complications of intraabdominal infectious processes and can progress to necrotizing infections. Necrotizing pancreatitis occurs in 10-25% of patients that require hospital admission for pancreatitis, is associated also with a 25% mortality rate, and may lead to formation of a retroperitoneal abscess. CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 63-year-old woman with a recently resolved case of pancreatitis who presented to the Emergency Department (ED) with a painful nodule on her left flank for 3 weeks, rapidly progressing over the last 12 h. In the ED,

Antimicrobial therapy of experimental intraabdominal sepsis.

Septic complications of colonic perforation involve miltiple bacteria derived from the intestinal flora. This type of mixed intraabdominal infection was produced experimentally by insertion of a standardized inoculum of rat colonic contents into the peritoneal cavity of male Wistar rats. The respective roles of coliforms and anerobic bacteria were then studied by use of selective antimicrobial therapy (with gentamicin and clindamycin). Untreated rats had a two-stage disease. Initally, there was an acute peritonitis associated with a 37% mortality rate; all animals that survived developed indol

Septic complications of elective laparoscopic colorectal resection.

BACKGROUND: We set out to determine the rate and pattern of septic complications of the surgical wound, abdominal cavity, and urinary and respiratory tracts following laparoscopic colorectal resection. METHODS: A longitudinal database of 500 consecutive cases of colorectal resections was reviewed. RESULTS: The total wound infection rate was 7.2% (36/500) and included infections of the abdominal wall wounds (32/500, 6.4%) and the perineal wounds (4/50, 8%). The anastomotic leak rate in 418 patients who underwent resection with primary anastomosis was 3.3% (14/418). Intraabdominal abscesses we

Successful intrauterine intracardiac transfusion in monochorionic twins affected by parvovirus B19.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the possibility to correct for fetal anemia using an intracardiac approach in twin pregnancies affected by fetal Parvovirus B19 infection. METHODS: A monochorionic twin pregnancy affected by fetal Parvovirus B19 infection and hydrops was treated using an intraabdominal approach and by intracardiac transfusions. Access to the umbilical cord was not possible. RESULTS: In one fetus, hydrops resolved after intraabdominal transfusions, in the other however, hydrops was progressive. After intracardiac transfusions, both fetuses normalized. CONCLUSIONS: In multiple gestation
