Control strategies for wildlife tuberculosis in Ireland.

The principal domestic maintenance host for Mycobacterium bovis is infected cattle. In countries where comprehensive surveillance schemes ha … are further limited by conservation and social reasons, particularly where culling is concerned. In Ireland and the UK, vaccination of badgers against M. bovis, if successfully employed, could directly facilitate the completion of bovine tuberculosis eradication. Programmes of research into vaccination of badgers are being undertaken in both countries, an …

Brucellosis--a persistent occupational hazard in Ireland.

A cross-sectional seroprevalence study using the complement fixation technique (CFT) was carried out among technical and support staff of the Department of Agriculture in Ireland (n=375). A result CFT of < 1:8 was accepted as normal, i.e., no evidence of exposure to Brucella abortus. Results were compared with available medical records to differentiate new from old or established cases. The participation rate was 75% (n= 281). Of the 281 participants, ten [3.6% (95% CI 1.7-6.5%)] tested positive (titers > or = 1:8). Veterinarians, laboratory staff, and workers based in meat plants were at incr…

Legionnaires' disease in Ireland--a cause for concern?

Legionnaires' disease is a multi-system illness that can have widespread clinical symptoms, though the principle manifestation is pneumonia. A review of all legionnaires' disease case notifications in Ireland in the 4 year period 1998-2001 was undertaken to assess the degree of concern health authorities here should have in relation to this disease. There were 17 cases of legionnaires' disease (all were legionella pneumophila serogroup 1) notified to the National Disease Surveillance Centre in the period 1998-2001. Nine cases were travel-associated cases with the majority of cases occurring du…

The great pretender returns to Dublin, Ireland.

BACKGROUND: An outbreak of syphilis has been identified primarily in Dublin, Ireland. On a background of a stable low incidence of syphilis, a significant increase in the number of cases of syphilis has been observed over the past 18 months. RESULTS: 181 cases of syphilis were seen in this period. 121 were defined as early syphilis. These cases were mainly among men who have sex with men (92%). A high rate of HIV co-infection was present; 16 patients who regularly attended HIV clinics were diagnosed with early syphilis. Nine patients were co-diagnosed with HIV and early syphilis. Prevalence and aetiology of leg ulcers in Ireland.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of leg ulcer disease in Ireland has been poorly documented. AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the aetiology and prevalence of leg ulcers in one health district. METHODS: All patients receiving healthcare for an active leg ulcer in the Mid-Western Health Board (MWHB) region of Ireland (population: 317,069) were identified in a defined two-month period. A cross-sectional survey of all healthcare workers providing care to patients with leg ulceration was carried out. Patients with leg ulcers of uncertain cause were invited for follow-up assessment to establish the…

Meningococcal disease in the Republic of Ireland: 1995.

Two hundred and nine culture confirmed cases of meningococcal disease were reported in the Republic of Ireland in 1995, using a new laboratory based surveillance system. The reported rate of 5.9/100000 population is one of the highest in western Europe, but the rate differed widely between regions. Fifty-three per cent of cases were female. Half of the cases occurred in four months (January, February, March, and December). Nineteen cases (9%) died. The highest age specific incidence was in infancy (under 1 year). Infections with serogroup B accounted for 105 cases (54%) and serogroup C 87 case…

Leptospirosis in the Republic of Ireland: 1985 to 1996.

Official government statistics and serological laboratory data provide limited information about the incidence of leptospirosis in the Republic of Ireland. The mean annual notified incidence in the Republic of Ireland from 1985 to 1996 was 1.3/million. The incidence according to hospital discharge diagnosis was higher at 4.9/million. One hundred and seventy-five serologically confirmed cases of leptospirosis were reported from 1986 to 1996, giving a mean annual incidence of 4.5/million. The true incidence of leptospirosis in the Republic of Ireland is probably higher, as hospital discharge dat…

Enteroviruses in recreational waters of Northern Ireland.

Virus surveillance of Northern Ireland recreational waters, between April 1986 and May 1989 demonstrated widespread enteroviral contamination of coastal and inland waters. In 1986, enteroviruses were detected in 4 of 46 (8.7%) water samples, collected from 6 coastal bathing waters. In 1987, 49 of 107 (45.8%) samples, from 16 coastal bathing waters, yielded enteroviruses; 33 of the enterovirus positive samples passed one or both of the coliform standards outlined by the European Economic Community (EEC) bathing water directive (76/160/EEC). Enteroviruses were also detected in 33 of 39 (84.6%) s…

Placental weights from normal deliveries in Ireland.

BACKGROUND: The weight of the delivered placenta gives a useful representation of placental function in utero. In the absence of Irish data, many pathologists rely on data from other populations, many of which are now 15 to 30 years old. The development of a population-specific nomogram would aid in the examination of placentas after delivery, allowing pathologists and medical scientists to more easily distinguish between placental physiological changes and pathology. AIMS: To record placental weights among women having a singleton delivery in Dublin and to establish median placental weights

We carried out a retrospective study looking at the incidence and clinical features of coeliac disease in Galway children over a 20 year period. The study period was divided in two parts. (I) Patients diagnosed between 1971 and 1980 and (II) between 1981 and 1990. Comparison was made between demographic and clinical data in these two periods.
