A 12-year-old boy presented with an incidental finding of an iris lesion after blunt injury. Ocular examination revealed a large atypical brown vascular nodule in the nasal iris, extending to the pupillary margin. There were smaller scattered nodules scattered within the iris and anterior chamber. Ultrasound biomicroscopy examination revealed no tumour behind the iris. Fundal examination findings were normal. Sector iridectomy revealed mixed spindle and epitheliod melanoma. The eye was enucleated. Histopathologic examination confirmed malignant melanoma confined to the iridocorneal angle, iris

The cause of glaucoma in 131 enucleated eyes from 128 cats was determined in a retrospective histologic study. Obliteration of the ciliary cleft by diffuse iridal melanoma (38 eyes), or other neoplasms (14 eyes), or by the presence of idiopathic lymphocytic-plasmacytic anterior uveitis (53 eyes) were the most frequent lesions likely to explain the development of glaucoma. Secondary changes of inner retinal atrophy, optic disc cupping, scleral thinning with megaglobus, and atrophy of ciliary processes were similar to those described in dogs and human beings with chronic glaucoma. In light of th

BACKGROUND: This case report describes the clinical and histological findings of a rare periocular iridophoroma in a tegu.
CASE PRESENTATION: Iridophoroma is a rare type of chromatophoroma, a tumor that arises from iridophores, specialized pigment cells responsible for reflecting light. This case report describes a 6-year-old male Argentine black and white tegu (Salvator merianae) presented with a large, irregular, proliferative mass in the periocular region. The mass originated from the upper left eyelid, partially covering the ocular surface, and measured 2.5 cm in diameter. The patient was

Iris melanoma is the rarest type of uveal melanomas. Only 4-5% of uveal melanomas occur on the iris. Although the iris can be easily examined due to its location, differentiation of melanocytic malformations such as naevi or melanomas is difficult for the examiner. According to publications by Rones and Zimmermann, histological examinations showed 22% of tumors to be malignant and 78% to be benign. This lead to iridectomy and iridocyclectomy as therapeutic solutions to gain ground over enucleation. Follow-up of the clinical signs, transillumination, ultrasonic biomicroscopy, iris fluorescein a

We describe a case of iris vascular tufts which came to our attention because of a hyphaema. Laser treatment was carried out for the vascular anomalies. After a period of 3 months, fresh vascular anomalies had appeared in different locations. Further treatment led to permanent obliteration. We emphasize the importance of fluoro-iridography in the monitoring of vascular anomalies as it allows accurate targeting treatment.

A 15-month-old, grey, Thoroughbred filly presented for investigation of a 6-week history of corneal oedema and blepharospasm on the right eye (OD). The filly was otherwise healthy. Following ophthalmic examination, glaucoma on the OD was diagnosed. A space occupying mass within the anterior chamber was documented on transpalpebral ultrasonographic examination. This mass obliterated most of the anterior intraocular structures on the peripheral nasal side (corneal endothelium and drainage angle), leading to secondary glaucoma. After systemic and topical treatment addressing secondary glaucoma, t

OBJECTIVES: Differentiation of iris and ciliary body lesions as benign or malignant and cystic or solid is important. The aim of this study was to compare anterior segment swept-source optical coherence tomography (AS SS-OCT) and ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) findings in iris and ciliary body tumors.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Forty-two eyes of 38 cases with iris and ciliary body tumors imaged with UBM and AS SS-OCT between September 2018 and September 2023 were evaluated retrospectively.
RESULTS: Of 42 eyes, 14 had melanoma, 14 iris pigment epithelial (IPE) cysts, 7 nevi, 3 Lisch nodules

PURPOSE: To evaluate the practicability and diagnostic value of anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) in cats, focusing on image quality and distinguishing iris melanosis from iris melanoma.
METHODS: Seventy-six client-owned cats were examined using a ZEISS Primus 200 OCT system. Image acquisition occurred without anesthesia in 65 cats; eight required injectable sedation, and three received anxiolytic medication. Mean iris thickness was measured; pigmentation-to-normal (PN) ratios were calculated from paired comparisons. OCT-based structural characteristics were analyzed in 4

Congenital ocular melanocytosis (COM) is an extremely rare melanocytic hyperplasia (0.038% in Caucasian population); it affects episclera and sclera. The conjunctival epithelium is not affected, as opposed to conjunctival melanosis. The pigmentation is grayish-blue and its consistency with the underlying tissues as the conjunctiva moves (deep pigmentation) is an essential diagnostic clue. COM may be isolated or associated with facial pigmentation, in the area innervated by the trigeminal nerve--known as oculodermal melanocytosis or nevus of Ota. COM may associate the following findings: iris h

Familial angiolipomatosis is a rare syndrome that may be confused clinically with neurofibromatosis type 1. This condition is most often inherited in an autosomal recessive manner; however, several reports have been published suggesting an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance. Angiolipomatosis, although somewhat disfiguring, is a benign condition with no known association with malignant neoplasms. This is in contradistinction to neurofibromatosis, an autosomal dominant syndrome associated with a myriad of benign and malignant neoplasms. It is, therefore, important to discriminate this entity

CASE REPORT: The case is presented of a patient with diagnosis of iris nevus in the left eye in youth with a poor follow-up, who referred a decreased visual acuity in that eye. A hyphaema and a 3×4×3mm nodule with irregular pigmentation was observed. Excision of the tumour and histological analysis confirmed the suspicion of iris melanoma in stage Ia.
DISCUSSION: Despite the low grade malignancy of iris melanoma and the low frequency of transformation of iris nevus into melanoma, a follow-up is required for its early diagnosis and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Iris metastasis in patients with gastric cancer is extremely rare. Herein, it is aimed to report on a patient with gastric adenocarcinoma and iris metastasis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old patient with the history of gastric cancer was admitted for eye pain and eye redness on his left eye. There was ciliary injection, severe +4 cells with hypopyon in the anterior chamber and a solitary, friable, yellow-white, fleshy-creamy vascularized 2 mm × 4 mm mass on the upper nasal part of the iris within the left eye. The presented patient's mass lesion in the iris fulfilled the criteria

Uveal melanoma, in spite of its rarity, represents the most common primitive intraocular malignant neoplasm of the adults; it affects choroid, ciliary bodied and iris and remains clinically silent for a long time, being accidentally discovered by routine ophthalmic exams. Prognosis of uveal melanoma is poor and frequently characterized by liver metastases, within 10-15 years from diagnosis. Autophagy is a multi-step catabolic process by which cells remove damaged organelles and proteins and recycle nutrients. It has been hypothesized that in early stages of tumorigenesis autophagy has a tumor

Following unilateral enucleation, 4 Domestic Shorthair cats with an average age of 12.5 years (range: 9-16 years) were histologically diagnosed with a presumed primary intraocular chondrosarcoma at the Comparative Ocular Pathology Laboratory of Wisconsin (Madison, Wisconsin). Medical records and follow-up were available for 3 of the 4 cats. Clinically, only 1 eye was affected in each cat; a mass lesion was noted in 2 cats, and a neoplasm was suspected in the other 2 cats. Grossly, 3 tumors presented as coalescing, poorly demarcated, white, friable masses filling the vitreous and intraocular ch
