[Pathophysiological mechanism of the developing radicular cyst of the jaw].

The radicular cysts are result of inflammatory process in the periapical tissues associated with necrotic and infected pulps. Humoral and cellular immune responses play a central role in the pathogenesis of these lesions. The most important role in the growth of these lesion have proinflammatore cytokine TNF-alpha, IL-1 and IL-6. Cytokine can be secreted by macrophages, monocytes and other cells of the immune system and can participate in skeletal homeostasis including osteoclastic formation, and bone resorption in maxillofacial region. The aim of this study is to give a consise rewiew for mec

Characterization of interstitial collagenases in jaw cyst wall.

Neutral salt extracts of 14 specimens of jaw cysts were prepared. Histopathological analysis showed that the specimens consisted of 6 radicular cysts, 6 dentigerous cysts, 1 residual cyst, and 1 odontogenic keratocyst. One periapical granuloma, 1 dental follicle and a sample of clinically healthy oral mucosa were similarly processed and used as controls. Measurement of collagenase activity by monitoring the formation of specific degradation products of type I and II collagen in solution by SDS-PAGE demonstrated that all the cyst extracts contained collagenase, some of which was endogenously ac…

Nonodontogenic Cysts of the Jaws and Treatment in the Pediatric Population.

Nonodontogenic cysts within the jaws are not a common presentation in the pediatric population. Cysts within the pediatric population tend to be developmental and odontogenic in nature. Although nonodontogenic cysts of the jaws are relatively uncommon, it is imperative the clinician understand their clinical behavior and management because failure to do so can result in increased patient morbidity. The nonodontogenic cysts of the jaws that are most often encountered are the central giant cell granuloma, traumatic bone cavity, aneurysmal bone cyst, nasopalatine duct cyst, and nasolabial cyst. T

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the jaws. (II). Pathogenesis.

The pathogenesis of the aneurysmal bone cyst is the subject of much controversy. This study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that the aneurysmal bone cyst is a secondary phenomenon which occurs in a primary lesion of bone. Histological material from 303 bone lesions was studied for evidence of development of aneurysmal bone cyst. Microcysts and blood-filled spaces, similar to those seen in aneurysmal bone cysts, were observed in 15 of 54 central giant cell granulomas studied (28%). The frequency was lower (10%) in 49 cases of fibrous dysplasia and very low in ossifying and cementifying fi

Median cysts of the jaws--not a true clinical entity.

The so-called median cysts of the jaws (median mandibular and median palatine) are currently classified as fissural cysts. Their existence as distinct clinical and histological entities has been the cause of debate. It is the purpose of this paper to point out that from present evidence in published case reports and reviews of the literature, the presence of these cysts in the midline of the jaws is a random finding. It is suggested that the title median mandibular and median palatine cysts should be discontinued and that cysts at these sites should be labelled according to their particular hi

Traumatic cyst of the jaws: report of 30 cases.

A clinicopathologic study was made on 30 cases of the traumatic bone cyst of the jaws, and these observations were recorded. --The lesion is one of skeletal-wide distribution, but in the jaws it occurs most frequently in the posterior portions of the mandible. --The majority of cases are not associated with trauma, and the lesion is most commonly detected in routine radiographs. --The median age of this series of patients was 20 years, and the majority of patients in this series white men. --Histologically extravasated red blood cells, degenerating fibromyxomatous tissue both inside and outsid

Bilateral inflammatory cysts of the jaw: report of an unusual case.

Radicular cyst is the most common odontogenic cyst occurring in the jaws. The cyst is commonly found in relation to the maxillary anterior teeth in the third and fifth decade of life. Although multiple radicular cysts are not uncommon in the jaws, bilaterally symmetrical representation of these cysts is rare. Radiographs prior to extraction help in diagnosis of these cysts and thereby prevent further morbidities. We report a case of 16-year-old male patient who presented bilateral radicular cysts symmetrically in the mandible.

Scanning electron microscopic observations on the inner surface of jaw cysts.

The cavity surface of 9 jaw cysts was studied in the scanning electron microscope. The material comprised 5 radicular, 2 residual, 1 dentigerous and 1 globulomaxillary cyst. The surface morphology varied from smooth to ruffled within the same cyst, and between cysts. Interepithelial spaces, some of which contained migrating leukocytes, were frequently observed. Bacteria occurred in 1 cyst (dentigerous) only, and included rods, filaments and spirochetes. Crystals of various morphology were seen in 6 of the cysts.
