Disorders of the TMJ are best evaluated with MR. Anatomy and morphology of the meniscus are key features of the imaging evaluation conducted using coronal and sagittal views with open and closed mouth. There is no direct correlation between symptoms and MR imaging findings. Anterior or lateral meniscal displacement, permanent or reversible, are described. Arthroscopy or arthrography may help in diagnosis of meniscal adhesion or perforation. HRCT is an adjunct to study degenerative bone changes.

A patient with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) developed an infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes in her left knee and both shoulder joints. The clinical presentation of the disease was rather indolent with relatively moderate joint symptoms. Moreover, the synovial fluid sample was only slightly turbid with a white blood cell count of 23.5 x 10(9)/1. In addition to affecting the joints, rheumatoid arthritis may wreak havoc on a number of organs in the body, including the heart, lungs, and eyes. Results of long-term studies suggest that morbidity and mortality increase in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. It is hoped that the new approach to pharmacologic treatment that uses aggressive medications shortly after onset of symptoms will alter the disease course, diminish morbidity, and eliminate the excess mortality seen in patients with long-standing rheumatoid arthritis.

Pulled elbow and hypermobility of joints are frequently seen in young children, the latter occurring in 5% of the general population. A group of 100 children with pulled elbows, composed of 64 girls and 36 boys with a mean age of 25.5 months, and their parents were checked for joint hypermobility in a prospective study over a period of two years. Results were compared with a normal (non-pulled elbow) control group of 30 children. We report the case of a 23-year-old man who fell from a third-floor window and injured his left hand. Physical examination and radiographic evaluation revealed open dorsal metacarpophalangeal dislocation of four fingers. The index finger dislocation was reduced in the emergency department, and the other three fingers responded to closed reduction during surgery. The patient made an uneventful recovery without complications. Metacarpophalangeal dislocations are unusual, with multiple dislocations rarely described.

Within a period of twelve years, the authors have treated twelve patients with metacarpophalangeal joint luxations of thumb and long fingers which could not be reposed by conservative treatment. The case reports are presented in order to describe the problems posed by this relatively rare injury, the reasons hindering a reposition, and the treatment methods. This study is intended to underline the importance of early diagnosis and immediate surgical treatment in order to maintain the function of the joint.

Plastic joints for orthoses have more advantages than metal joints. They are lightweight, noiseless comfortable to use, rust proof, corrosion free, and radiolucent. Two types of plastic joints were developed by the authors, one for the ankle joint and the other for the knee joint, elbow joint or hip joint. Polypropylene was chosen as the joint material because of its appropriate flexibility and toughness.
