Moraxella bovoculi sp. nov., isolated from calves with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

Eighteen isolates of a Gram-negative coccus (strain 237(T)) were cultured from the eyes of dairy and beef calves affected with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK; 'pinkeye') in northern California, USA, during summer 2002. These isolates had near full-length (1397 bp) 16S rRNA gene sequences that clustered into three groups with 99.9 % sequence similarity. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence, the isolates were most closely associated with Moraxella bovis and Moraxella ovis in clade I of the classical moraxellae. Biochemically, the novel isolates could be distinguished from the othe

Chlamydial-caused infectious keratoconjunctivitis in bighorn sheep of Yellowstone National Park.

An epizootic of infectious keratoconjunctivitis occurred in bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) in Yellowstone National Park during the winter of 1981-82. The causative organism was identified as Chlamydia sp. Mortality related to the epizootic was approximately 60% of an estimated 500 bighorn sheep in the northern range population. The infection probably affected all sex and age classes, but field surveys of live animals and mortality suggested that mature rams died disproportionately. Limited field observations the following winter on individuals having both normal and cloudy-appearing eyes sugg

First report of Moraxella oculi in Brazil in an infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis outbreak.

Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is a widespread ocular disease that affects dairy and beef cattle worldwide, caused by Gram-negative bacteria from the genus Moraxella. It is the most common eye disease in cattle, with symptoms including tearing, ocular pain, corneal opacity, photophobia, ulceration, and, in severe cases, permanent blindness. This study focused on characterizing Moraxella species in a 2022 IBK outbreak in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Ocular swabs from 18 symptomatic Holstein cattle were analyzed through colony isolation, physiological tests, and molecular techniques, incl

Effects of aflatoxin ingestion on the development of Moraxella bovis infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

A study was conducted to determine whether measured doses of aflatoxin given under different schedules would influence the pathogenesis of Moraxella bovis induced infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK). Calves were allotted to 4 groups (groups I-IV) of 9, 9, 9, and 8 calves, respectively. Group I calves were given aflatoxin for 11 consecutive days starting 5 days before their eyes were exposed to M. bovis. Group II calves were given aflatoxin for 5 consecutive days starting 7 days after their eyes were exposed to M. bovis. Group III calves were given aflatoxin for 5 consecutive days star

Comparison of vaccination and treatment in controlling naturally occurring infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

A vaccination study for infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis was conducted on 108 newborn Hereford calves in the US Department of Agriculture Meat Animal Research Center cattle herd at Clay Center, Nebraska. Groups were allocated so that age of calf, sex of calf, and age of dam were equally distributed between the 54 vaccinated (group I) and the 54 nonvaccinated (group 2) control calves. The dams of both groups of calves were monitored as group 3 controls. An autogenous Moraxella bovis bacterin (formalin-killed, whole cells) was given IM at birth and at approximate intervals of 2 weeks for a

Bacteriologic and vaccination studies in a field epizootic of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis in calves.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) was enzootic in the beef cattle herds at Dixon Springs Agricultural Center, University of Illinois. The development of nonhemolytic and hemolytic Moraxella bovis flora in the eyes of 48 calves in a closed cow-calf herd was monitored from late May to October, 1972. The incidence of clinical IBK was recorded each week. In late May, nonhemolytic M bovis was isolated from 26% of calf eyes. The peak incidence of IBK was observed in early September, with 26% of the eyes affected. At that time, nonhemolytic M bovis was isolated from 10% of the eyes, and he

Detection of specific Mycoplasma conjunctivae antibodies in the sera of sheep with infectious keratoconjunctivitis.

The serological cross reactions between Mycoplasma conjunctivae, the etiological agent of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC), and the antigenetically and phylogenetically closely related Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae, which is often found in sheep, were analysed. Cross reacting antigens were identified using sera from sheep with IKC and from sheep of herds known to be free of IKC, as well as rabbit hyperimmune serum specific to the two Mycoplasma species. Cross reactions were predominantly due to the strongly antigenic proteins of 42 kDa and 83 kDa. Serospecific antigens of M. conjunctivae could

A survey of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis in the Gisborne and Hunterville regions of New Zealand.

A postal survey of 400 beef farmers in the Hunterville and Gisborne districts sought to identify features of farms or management procedures that might influence the occurrence, transmission or severity of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK). The overall response rate was 72%. The annual incidence of IBK outbreaks rose from 10% to 28% between the years 1977 to 1981 and was similar for both districts. Prevalence was highest during mid-summer and lowest in mid-winter. Larger properties were more prone to outbreaks. In both districts, farmers of IBK-free properties purchased fewer cattle

Semiselective medium for isolation of Moraxella bovis from cattle with infectious keratoconjunctivitis.

The incorporation of 2.5 micrograms/ml of cloxacillin into 5% bovine blood agar provided an inexpensive, easily prepared culture medium for the primary isolation of Moraxella bovis from bovine lacrimal and nasal secretions. With this medium, the time required to identify and isolate M. bovis from large numbers of field specimens was substantially reduced, whereas the sensitivity of isolation was increased by 60%.

[Isolation of Chlamydia psittaci and Moraxella bovis from infectious keratoconjunctivitis in lambs].

Out of 189 lambs in the flock, 25 animals suffered from bilateral or unilateral conjunctivitis, or keratoconjunctivitis. By serological examination (RVK), positive levels of antibodies to the group-specific antigen of Chl. psittaci were found in three out of six lambs examined by laboratory methods. Bacteriological examination of eye smears of six lambs showed in four cases the infection by microorganisms of Moraxella bovis. Smears from the conjunctivas of these lambs were after preparation instilled in the yolk sacs of six to seven days old chicken embryos. One strain of Chlamydia psittaci wa

A national survey of the clinical features, treatment and importance of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

A postal survey of cattle producers throughout Australia was conducted to obtain information concerning the occurrence, signs and treatment of infectious bovine keratocojunctivitis, animals breeds, animal numbers and types, environmental conditions under which the animals were kept and management routines and systems of the animals (Slatter et al 1982). The most common clinical signs reported were ocular discharge (43.9%), corneal opacity (9.9%), or both (46.1%). The majority of respondents (54.8%) indicated duration of infections of at least 3 weeks. The condition was predominantly unilateral

Wavelength of ultraviolet radiation that enhances onset of clinical infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

Cellulose acetate filtered ultraviolet (UV) radiation and unfiltered UV radiation were used on calves that were subsequently challenge exposed with Moraxella bovis. The onset, course, and severity of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) were studied. Ten calves irradiated with unfiltered UV had the disease 1 to 2 days after M bovis challenge exposure; all 10 calves had moderate to severe IBK. Ten calves irradiated with filtered UV and 10 calves not irradiated manifested IBK in a similar manner. The date of onset and severity of the disease varied. Evidence is presented to support the c

Moraxella oculi sp. nov., isolated from a cow with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

A novel species of the genus Moraxella was isolated from an ocular swab from a cow with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis. 16S rRNA gene sequencing suggested this species was Moraxella bovis (99.59 % nucleotide identity). Average nucleotide identity was calculated using a draft whole genome sequence of this strain compared with type strains of closely related Moraxella species and results established that it represents a new species. The genome size was 2 006 474 nucleotides and the G+C content was 42.51 mol%. The species could not be identified by matrix assisted laser desorption/ionizat
