Sinistroporomonorchis bolini n. sp. (Trematoda: Monorchiidae) from the Ocellated killifish, Floridichthys polyommus (Cyprinodontidae) in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico based on an integrative taxonomy analysis.

Members of Sinistroporomonorchis Wee, Cutmore, Pérez-del-Olmo & Cribb, 2020 represent a small group of trematodes belonging to the Monorchiidae Odhner, 1911 with 5 species described from mugilid hosts. Specimens consistent with the generic concept of Sinistroporomonorchis were obtained from Floridichthys polyommus (Cyprinodontidae); most of them were juveniles from 4 localities within the Yucatán Peninsula. After a detailed morphological examination including scanning electron microscopy images and a principal component analysis, the specimens collected represented a new species, Sinistroporom

The description of a critically endangered new species of seasonal killifish, Nothobranchius sylvaticus (Cyprinodontiformes: Nothobranchiidae), a relict species from an East African forest refugium in south-eastern Kenya.

A new species, Nothobranchius sylvaticus sp. nov. is described from ephemeral swamps in open areas of the Gongoni Forest in the seasonal Mku … rom completing all stages of its annual life cycle in its ephemeral aquatic habitats, because these killifishes depend on a clay-rich substratum for embryonic development of the buried eggs through the dry season. This new species qualifies for a conservation status of Critically Endangered.

Parasites alter host community structure in a natural experiment.

Parasites can profoundly alter host communities. However, the impact of parasites can vary from one community to another. Understanding why the impact of parasites varies across communities is challenging because it requires (i) separating the direct effects of the parasite on the host species from the indirect effects it exerts through the ecological interactions among the hosts and (ii) identifying how the presence of one host alters rates of infection in another. Freshwater fish communities in Trinidad have recently been invaded by a generalist parasitic nematode. This event, combined with

Phyllodistomum spinopapillatum sp. nov. (Digenea: Gorgoderidae), from the Oaxaca killifish Profundulus balsanus (Osteichthyes: Profundulidae) in Mexico, with new host and locality records of P. inecoli: Morphology, ultrastructure and molecular evidence.

Phyllodistomum spinopapillatum sp. nov. is described from the urinary bladder of the Oaxaca killifish, Profundulus balsanus Ahl (Profundulidae) in Rio Pueblo Viejo and Rio Santa Cruz, Oaxaca, southwestern Mexico. The new species is described based on evidence gathered from morphology, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and partial sequences of the 28S rRNA gene. Diagnostic characters of the new species of Phyllodistomum Braun 1899 are the presence of spines on the entire body surface and having a ventral sucker almost half the size of oral sucker. The new species possess a large number of dom

How Model Organisms and Model Uncertainty Impact Our Understanding of the Risk of Sublethal Impacts of Toxicants to Survival and Growth of Ecologically Relevant Species.

Understanding how sublethal impacts of toxicants affect population-relevant outcomes for organisms is challenging. We tested the hypotheses that the well-known sublethal impacts of methylmercury (MeHg) and a polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB126) would have meaningful impacts on cohort growth and survival in yellow perch (Perca flavescens) and Atlantic killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus) populations, that inclusion of model uncertainty is important for understanding the sublethal impacts of toxicants, and that a model organism (zebrafish Danio rerio) is an appropriate substitute for ecologically rele

Age-dependent decline in sperm quality and function in a naturally short-lived vertebrate.

Maximizing the life-long reproductive output would lead to the prediction that short-lived and fast aging species would undergo no - if any - reproductive senescence. Turquoise killifish (Nothobranchius furzeri) are naturally short-lived teleosts, and undergo extensive somatic aging, characterized by molecular, cellular, and organ dysfunction following the onset of sexual maturation. Here, we tested whether naturally short-lived and fast aging male turquoise killifish maximize reproduction and display minimal - if any, reproductive senescence. We analysed age-related changes in sperm traits, t

Integrating morphology and genetics to resolve the first reptilian liolopid life cycle in Africa, Paraharmotrema karinganiense (Digenea: Liolopidae).

The Liolopidae (Diplostomoidea) are a small family of digeneans that parasitize reptiles and amphibians as adults. Knowledge of intermediate hosts in this family remains scarce, leaving a major gap in the understanding of liolopid biology. To date, the only fully elucidated life cycle is that of Liolope copulans Cohn 1902, a species infecting Asian salamanders, with no other cercarial or metacercarial stages known. This study aimed to identify potential intermediate hosts for Paraharmotrema karinganiense, found in several chelonian species from southeastern Mozambique and South Africa. African

Experimental and natural warming elevates mercury concentrations in estuarine fish.

Marine food webs are the most important link between the global contaminant, methylmercury (MeHg), and human exposure through consumption of seafood. Warming temperatures may increase human exposure to MeHg, a potent neurotoxin, by increasing MeHg production as well as bioaccumulation and trophic transfer through marine food webs. Studies of the effects of temperature on MeHg bioaccumulation are rare and no study has specifically related temperature to MeHg fate by linking laboratory experiments with natural field manipulations in coastal ecosystems. We performed laboratory and field experimen

Morphological maturation and circuit integration of adult-born neurons are key to functional recovery after traumatic brain injury.

Successful repair after brain injury requires a chain of events, including the generation, migration, and successful integration of adult-born neurons into preexisting circuits. In mammals, the capacity for neuronal regeneration is extremely limited and further declines with age, constraining recovery. Regeneration-competent vertebrates offer a unique opportunity to uncover mechanistic principles of seamless brain repair. We here introduce the African turquoise killifish, a naturally short-lived vertebrate in which tissue repair occurs at young but not old age. We established an integrative ap

Differential retinal ganglion cell resilience to optic nerve injury across vertebrate species.

Optic neuropathies comprise a diverse group of disorders that ultimately lead to retinal ganglion cell (RGC) degeneration. Despite varying etiologies, these conditions share a conserved pathological progression: axonal damage in the optic nerve triggers progressive RGC degeneration. Understanding species-specific differences in neuronal resilience is critical for identifying key survival mechanisms and potential neuroprotective targets. In this study, we compare RGC densities and survival rates following optic nerve crush (ONC) in three vertebrate models-mice, zebrafish, and killifish-under st

Engulfment by brain macrophages in a short-lived vertebrate.

Engulfment by macrophages is critical for waste clearance in the vertebrate brain. Understanding clearance mechanisms may open new therapeutic possibilities to counter brain aging and neurodegenerative diseases. However, few in vivo models exist to study engulfment in the brain and characterize this process during aging and across species. Here we present a genetic model for secretion of a fluorescent protein by neurons in the brain of the African turquoise killifish, the shortest-lived vertebrate that can be bred in captivity. We use this model to identify a population of brain macrophages in

Changes in feeding behavior of longfin squid (Doryteuthis pealeii) during laboratory exposure to pile driving noise.

Anthropogenic noise can cause diverse changes in animals' behaviors, but effects on feeding behaviors are understudied, especially for key invertebrate taxa. With the offshore wind industry expanding, concern exists regarding potential impacts of pile driving noise on squid and other commercially and ecologically vital taxa. We investigated changes in feeding and alarm (defense) behaviors of squid, Doryteuthis pealeii, predating on killifish, Fundulus heteroclitus, during playbacks of pile driving noise recorded from wind farm construction within squids' habitat. Fewer squid captured killifish

Effects of a pesticide and a parasite on neurological, endocrine, and behavioral responses of an estuarine fish.

In coastal waters, pesticides and parasites are widespread stressors that may separately and interactively affect the physiology, behavior, and survival of resident organisms. We investigated the effects of the organophosphate pesticide chlorpyrifos and the trematode parasite Euhaplorchis californiensis on three important traits of California killifish (Fundulus parvipinnis): neurotransmitter activity, release of the stress hormone cortisol, and behavior. Killifish were collected from a population without E. californiensis, and then half of the fish were experimentally infected. Following a 30

Aphanius fasciatus: a molecular model of scoliosis?

STUDY DESIGN: Observational study of Killifish with spinal deformities OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the morphology and molecular biology of Aphanius fasciatus with severe spine deformities. Idiopathic Scoliosis affects 3% of the population and is an abnormal three-dimensional curvature of the spine with unknown cause. The lack of a model system with naturally occurring spinal curvatures has hindered research on the etiology of IS. METHODS: The Mediterranean killifish Aphanius fasciatus, collected from the coast of Sfax (Tunisia), which has an inborn skeletal deformity was chosen. We used morphologi

Euhaplorchis californiensis Cercariae Exhibit Positive Phototaxis and Negative Geotaxis.

Parasites often use external cues to identify and move toward environments where they are likely to encounter suitable hosts. The trematode parasite Euhaplorchis californiensis produces cercariae that emerge from California horn snails ( Cerithideopsis californica [= Cerithidea californica]) to infect California killifish ( Fundulus parvipinnis) as second intermediate hosts. Based upon work on a congeneric Euhaplorchis species from Florida, and based on the ecology of its killifish host, we hypothesized that E. californiensis cercariae in southern California estuaries are positively phototacti

Adult neurogenesis in the Uruguayan teleost species Austrolebias charrua and Gymnotus omarorum.

Neurogenesis -the process by which new neurons are generated in the brain- is critical for nervous system development and plasticity. Adult neurogenesis underlies growth, repair, and adaptation to environmental changes. Vertebrates differ in their neurogenic and regenerative capacity, being particularly prominent in teleost as adult neurogenesis occurs throughout the rostral-caudal brain axis. This review examines adult proliferation and neurogenesis in the autochthonous Uruguayan teleost Austrolebias charrua and Gymnotus omarorum. A. charrua are annual fishes that live in temporary freshwater

The effects of oil exposure on peripheral blood leukocytes and splenic melano-macrophage centers of Gulf of Mexico fishes.

In August and November 2010 we collected and examined peripheral blood and tissues from three species of Gulf of Mexico fish. Findings were compared to non-exposed control fish. The leukocyte counts of exposed alligator gar were not significantly different from controls, while exposed Gulf killifish and sea trout had significantly decreased lymphocyte counts. Liver ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) values from sea trout were significantly greater than control sea trout EROD values, suggesting poly aromatic hydrocarbon exposure. Splenic melano-macrophage centers (MMCs) from exposed sea trout

Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibition improves age-dependent kidney microvascular rarefaction.

INTRODUCTION: Aging is associated with progressive loss of kidney function and vascular structure, with and without chronic kidney disease. However, the mechanisms driving kidney vascular aging and potential therapeutic interventions remain poorly understood. METHODS: African turquoise killifish (Nothobranchius furzeri), a naturally short-lived vertebrate, were used to investigate the natural course of kidney aging. We inhibited the sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 using dapagliflozin (SGLT2i) to test a potential therapeutic intervention. Histological, immunofluorescent, and 3D vascular imagin
